Congratulation! Yes we are lucky to get premium display for not that much price like new Z2 series.
and yes i5 is also good chioce
-
Yeah. It's hard to believe that, at just $800, I'm getting the best display out there. I'm a display freak
Before ordering this vaio, i tried the Lenovo X220, which was $1450, 12.5 inch 1366x768 IPS display and 128gb SSD. I returned it and am waiting for the credit.
Congrats too on your purchase of the 2290X -
^^
When are you getting your Beast ? -
^^
It will ship from China at july 18th. can't wait for it and let everyone else at home feel jealous
The glossy black lid finish is so sexy! mine is the Bolt Black which is matte.. sad. the canadian F22 only comes in that color and silver whereas the US one has the shiny black lid finish, white, silver and bolt black.
It's a good thing that Sony North America chose to just stick with the Vaio Premium 1080p screen, cause 95% of the people buying the previous F series thought that all displays were the same... as long as they see the "Full HD 1920x1080" they think it's the best.. when there are some F series that came with the subpar Vaio Display 1600x900 and the average Vaio Plus 1920x1080. Sony Europe still has these 2 displays for the F series, which is a let down, though atleast they let their customers see the 3 display types on the configuration of the CTO model. -
I am appalled and (frankly) angered that I am not able to record streaming audio in the F22 (VPCF226FM).
I've been through this is the past, in XP on an HP, and it is simply that the manufacturer (SONY) is too cheap to choose a proper sound card. Realtek have several sound cards available, with "normal" options for recording devices, but SONY have opted out. What is the point of advertising a machine as having superb media sound if you can't record something!!!!
The ONLY recording device is the microphone. IF you hook up the LINE OUT to the microphone IN then you can no longer hear what you are recording. What a crock of SH--!!!!
And if some buffoon tells me that this is to prevent copyright infringement, I will tell them to boil their head! The BBC website even offers classical music albums for downloading-on-record, and much more. Microsoft and SONY clearly have their heads up some unpleasant and very dark places.
I would be most grateful if someone could explain to me how SONY came to ruin an otherwise-perfect laptop, but I hold out faint hope. I will not send the laptop back just because of this, but I would advise anyone else to think twice before taking the plunge. $1300 is a lot to pay, just to find that SONY has refused to spring the extra few dollars for a proper REALTEK card.
If anyone has run into this, and has found a solution, God Bless You and I hope you share.
Thanks
Chromian -
@chromian I don't understand what you say, can you explain more what is problem? And in what program and what circumstance?
-
I'm sorry but i dont know anything about the F series' sound hardware. But for most people, the F series seems to be the best desktop replacement computer at the moment.
-
Thanks for your interest guys, but here is the problem, and it is not confined to the SONY.
Realtek make several versions of their sound card. I have Realtek drivers and software on several computers, including a Dell 9300, Sony FG, Dell 8100 laptop, also a couple of Acer Quad core desk tops.
Typically, the sound system lists multiple sound recording devices, including WAVE, What-U-Hear and Software Synthesizer in addition to the microphone.
In the VPCF226FM, the only device listed is the microphone.
Typically I record material from the internet off the BBC web site ( BBC - BBC Radio 4 Extra Programmes - Schedule, Monday 11 July 2011) such as Sherlock Holmes mysteries, and also Talking Books from the library, and I load these into my MP3 player to listen to on long flights and road journeys.
I have not found a way to do this on the F22, and I was not expecting this issue on a $1300 laptop that advertises "Enhanced Audio", with multiple cores and 700Gb storage etc. etc.
I did briefly manage to record some streaming sound, but the microphone built into the screen was active at the same time, so the result was rubbish.
In previous discussions with other companies that have this same problem (Gateway) I was told to connect the Line Out to the Microphone input jack. This is a terrible solution, since that cuts off the speakers and you can't hear what it is that you are listening to.
I have no interest in the camera (why would anyone want to look at my ugly face?) and hence no interest in the microphone either. But there seems to be no easy way to decouple the microphone functionality from the internal audio stream, as one could in the previous computers that I have mentioned.
The other Realtek sound systems have so many sound options, yet SONY appear to have gone with the very cheapest and worst version, and I find this unacceptable in a product of this price range. The F22 is otherwise a stellar product, and SONY have fallen short in this area. The sound system is what I would have expected on a $400 laptop, fit only for a child.
When will SONY (and Microsoft) start to learn that there are adult users of their machines, and treat us with respect?
I am very disappointed.
Anyway, that's my complaint with SONY. If anyone can come up with a solution I would be most grateful to hear of it. I know that there is a potential fix using another manufacturer's external USB sound adaptor, but this is certainly a feature that should be in a machine of the maturity of the F22.
I shall write to SONY directly. What one does about the other companies that are cutting features, I do not know. I wish my Dell 9300 had not gone bad.
Unfortunately, this is the one feature that one does not find out about until one has brought it home, and since my previous laptop had died (screen) I was in a rush to get up and running again. I have not gone back to Best Buy, since there is not a lot that the Geeks can do about this design defect.
Thanks for listening to my ramble guys (and gals),
chromian -
Ok. hope it works out for you.
-
Recommend USB sound card.
-
I've installed a Creative USB sound card ($40), and it does not fix the problem.
Recording live stream from the internet I get active input from the system microphone on top of the recording.
There doesn't seem to be any way around it. Disabling the microphone stops the live stream also.
This SONY VPCF226FM is worse than a Fischer Price toy when it comes to sound control.
Thanks anyway, I guess SONY never figured anyone would ever want to make their own recordings. Simpletons. I've had it for tonight.

I just pre-order this F22 this morning . Hell yeahh! I chose this one over 3D , I have a Sony 3D HDTV , theres not reason for my to get this F22 3D
i cant wait now to get my new Vaio , the one i have now is AW , I bought it 2 years ago , lets see if is much better than AW lol
-
-
Nice. Mine will start shipping on July 18th
I totally like its design. I heard it was designed by Bravia designers from Sony. The first thing you'll notice probably is that the display is much better as the 2290X-2D share the same display as the one on the 2190X, which apparently, has become the 2290X-3D. It is the top-of-the-line "Vaio Display Premium" which is reserved on the Z and new F series( Theres one left that can be configured with the premium display which is the VPCEB490X, $749 clearance sale, but has an old cpu & old gpu, a very good deal still though).
And it seems that in North America, Sony will be using the Premium display on all 1080p screens from now on, whereas in Europe, the Vaio Plus 1080p screen still exists. Hurray for NA! -
I'm not really sure if this is related to what you're trying to do, but I have been able to record my own music through the Mixcraft program. It allows me to make my own songs and what not. I don't know what you mean by recording live stream from the internet though, nor am I an expert on sound cards. -
Hey everyone,
A couple questions from someone considering an F22 2D.
(1) For the people having the frame-rate drops during gaming...do any of you have CTO F22s with Fresh Start? Or is this only a problem on the bloatware-equipped F22s?
(2) What do people think of the keyboard? Crispness? Tactile feedback? How strong is the return spring on each key? -
^^
The keyboard is the best in the business! Period. -
So, its not just me that's had this same problem?
It's definitely lessened, and is worse in some games, than others. It's become more erratic. I thought it was strange behavior, and not just poor performance.

I thought there were more than one person complaining of framerate drops in this thread, but maybe I read it wrong. Anyway, feinimation, I have no knowledge either way as to whether or not you're the only one having that problem, and I don't have an F22 myself. I was just asking.

Hi, does anyone one know if the base 1600 x 900 screen on the F22 is the same one as on the F13, the one that didn't get such great reviews? I'm in UK btw.
Also I'm feeling hard done by. I specced an f22 on sony.com - $1099.99
Equivalent spec in the UK costs £1244.00! -
Yes most probably its the same panel the 1600x900. Its not offered anywhere except EU I guess. We do not have any F2 with 1600x900 in Asia Pacific. And I believe there is none in US either.
-
My F22(90X) just arrived yesterday.
Heres a very quick review of the major things ive noticed while messing about with it last night and this morning.
With standard internet and windows explore use its whisper quiet, most of the time you cant even hear the fan at all. It will kick in every once in a while when the CPU load increase but only for a short time. And even at that i couldnt descride it as overly loud.
The battery life (on 2/3 brightness, balanced power, WIFI off) showed 4 hours after a full charge. Now I havnt got a chance to check if thats just wishfull thinking on Sonys part by actually running it down to the clock, but a good start . . .
The screen is AMAZING, vivid colours, very bright and the matt finish is nice in combating glare, viewing angles are nice too.
The matt finish is better than i expected, not as nice to look at as the Gloss Black of the F21 and 3D models, but hopefully it should wear better, especially on the rest . . . (its does show alot of finger prints though)
Key Board is great, nice texture and feedback to the keys, and the back lighting looks sweet, however there is some light leakage around the keys which lets it down a little, especially when viewing the keyboard at an angle.
The proformance has been amazing (0% - 3% processor load under normal internet and windows explore use) but in fairness i havnt installed anything that would really test it, so i cant really comment on this aspect too much for now.
Sound is pretty nice, good stereo for a laptop, looking forward to testing it with Tron Legacy on Bluray some time today. not great on the bass front but how many laptops are?
Size, its chunky! especially to the rear but the weight is good. (comparing it to my old FW)
Thats pretty much all the impression i can give for under a days use, im sure more detailed reviews will come but that just a simple, quick first impressions.
Overall: Great Laptop, especially for the money, ($1150 off Sony style US) or just over 800 euro from where im bringing it back to. -
that was my second reason to get 2d and not 3d , I ready the Glossy Black gets dirty too quick , thats why i chose Matte Black!

I have just ordered a 2D F22, so I was curious when I read this.
It turns out my old Dell Inspiron 6400 suffer from the same drawback.
As a programmer I thaught there should be a solution possible, in spite of the shortcommings of the sound card.
After a little research I found that you need to have a sound recording software that is able to select "windows audio driver", instead of any of the other (not available) sources. (I´ve heard about this problem several years ago, but couldn´t remember that this was the actual solution.)
"Windows audio driver" is actually what is played in your internal loudspeakers of your laptop/pc. Thus no need for the "cable work around", which is no good in some/many cases.
Yesterday night I found a software called "Replay Music" from Applian Technologies. (It might be better/cheaper software out there. I just wanted to get a "proof of consept" with respect to if its possible to rectify this issue with a software solution. ;-)
I installed the demo of "Replay Music" on my Dell, which also shows only Speakers as output source and Mic as the only input source.
It works perfectly to record from internet-radio, at least the local stations I tested with. Quality of sound seems to be just as good as from your sound card.
As I understood your issue, this would solve your problem.
Software can be found at : www.applian.com
"Replay Music" costs $19,90 and they have another version which is $79.-
(I have no relations to this vendor/software and do not know if it´s stable, if it has other features and so on.)
Software seems to be updated and supports Win XP/Vista/7.
Nevertheless I agree that Sony should have choosen a better sound card solution for such an expensive laptop....... it shouldn´t be neccessary to buy external software in order to get "standard functionallity" to work! *IMO*
@SONY : Could you, please, provide us with a Vaio software solution for this issue. I guess maybe other Vaio´s have this flaw as well, since your "Multimedia Flagship" has it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the way, I envy your prices on the Sony Vaio laptops.
I have paid 13.300.- NOK ( US$ 2375.-) for my F22S1E.
This includes a 25% VAT, but it´s still a high price compared to what you are paying. On top of that we don´t have the CTO option, only 3 pre-configured models to choose from.
My price is slightly lower than the Sony Centre Retail price though.
The F22S1E-model has : Intel i7-2630QM
16,4"HDLEDPremiumDisp 8GB 640GB GT540 BLURAY-burner W7HP64 keyboard backlight, Adobe PS Elements 9 and Premiere Elements 9 and so on.
Confirmed delivery for my F22 is on my birthday this Friday!
Wbr SmileySince1993 -
FYI : When I navigated away from A_p_p_l_i_a_n (mentioned above) order page I was offered a $5 discount. In case you want to buy it....... ;-)
-
Thanks for the feedback! My F2290S (Canadian version) is arriving this Friday!!I'm excited to know that you found the screen amazing. For the screen is the main reason I bought this laptop.
I recently bought an external IPS monitor from Dell, the Ultrasharp U22211H. It was stunning. The pictures, the colors, the contrast blew me away. But, there was a problem.... it was too big.. it was giving me headaches.. so I had to return it. So I checked this F2290S.. and it turned out.. it has the VAIO Display Premium!

http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...nged-lower-specs-gt540-gt520.html#post7701901
I started a thread regarding my experience with Sonystyle.ca and my new VAIO F22 2D order. My order confirmation page specs were altered secretly to lower specs and my laptop shipped to me with the graphics card downgraded without notification to a GT520 from a GT540. -
It may either be that it was really GT520M that's supposed to be in the F22 or it really is GT540M, but an error in the database may have caused this to happen (order & shipping email correct).
Did you receive your F22? Did you check in the device manager and dxdiag? -
EDIT: in other thread
-
Copied this from the other thread so that people are aware of this problem. I reported it to the BBB as well..... Im sure nothing will be done, but this is terrible on Sony's end.
"BEWARE!!!!
Just realized I had the same problem. Phoned sonystyle.ca and they said that they didnt have the product, and that they can offer me $50 off to go with the GT520. I declined this and told them I dont want the laptop and cancelled my order.
With them saying they dont have the GT540 doesnt make sense either, because the Sony US site allows you to order either the 540 or 520. My laptop was shipped from China, Im sure they arent assembled at different locations and Im sure they have the 540 in stock.... Maybe just not for us ordering from Canada?
The thing that really makes me angry about this whole situation is that even the shipping confirmation that was emailed to me said that it shipped with the 540. THEY changed the specs on their website afterwards, and without this message board I may not have noticed at all. The shipment confirmation was sent roughly a week after I ordered the laptop.
So basically, if you dont log in to your account on sonystyle.ca and realize that the 540 was changed to the 520, you will receive the 520 without ANY NOTIFICATION. This shouldnt be legal.... they said that they were aware of the problem, yet I never received any notice that my order is different than the day I purchased it. I shouldnt have to phone to be offered $50 off. They should be calling EVERYONE who ordered the product and offering it to them!!!!!!!
SONY IS A JOKE!" -
Wow.. this is sad. Though honestly I am still excited for my F22 to arrive. I'm suspecting that Sony.ca has made some corrections about their website. It's possible that they wrongly put GT540M as the gpu for the VPCF2290S.
If you compare:
F22 CTO Canada: $999.99 (core i7, GT520m 1GB, 4gb RAM, 500gb 5400rpm HDD, cd/dvd) (applied $200 discount)
F22 CTO US: $1099.99 (same specs, except that 500gb 7200 rpm HDD and GT520M 512mb)
Our version of the F22 is still cheaper if you compare. The US has a faster HDD, but our GT520M has a bigger gpu memory. So i guess it's still fair. Also don't forget that our version of the F22 can be configured with the i5 cpu (which i did), and brings the price down to just $799 ---a very good deal if you ask me. It's actually a steal since Sony North America chose to have the VAIO Display Premium of the F22. Sony Europe and some other parts of the globe are selling their F22 series with 3 types of display which is:
1) VAIO Display 1600x900 (same quality of panel you'll see in netbooks)
2) VAIO Display Plus 1920x1080 (good quality but is just average)
3) VAIO Display Premium 1920x1080 (best panel Sony has, matte display, Adobe RGB colours, better viewing angles)
Sony.ca might not have deliberately did this. If you are aware, Sony.ca has the "Display" information of the f22 cto model this time, unlike last week when "GT540M" is displayed on the configuration page. I guess Sony.ca has made some corrections on their website, reveleaing the true and actual GPU included for the F22 CTO model (VPCF2290S), which is GT520M 1gb. -
EDIT: in other thread

I posted in this thread only to put a link to my started thread about the issue in here so ppl wouldn't miss it in the regular Sony lounge area.
Could you please stop posting everything you say in both threads. That way it can just be one thread and less confusing and avoid needless double replies to every one of your double posts. -
Dear SmileySince1993,
Thank you so much for the link to the Applian product - at first blush it does appear to be a solution to the problem. I find I am able at last to record without pickup from the built-in microphone. I am most grateful.
For those of you in the forum who are perhaps unfamiliar with the technique, I will briefly describe what I do.
Go to the website of your choice (e.g. BBC - BBC Radio 4 Extra Programmes - Schedule, Sunday 17 July 2011) and play a streaming program. There are many to choose from, Radio 4Xtra is older UK comedy, drama and quizzes.
Record the sound using the program of your choice. I use CoolEdit 2000 (quite the best, most capable and well written of any software I have ever used) or SoundForge etc., etc.. This produces an MP3, WAVE or similar file in your choice of formats. MP3s can then be downloaded to your player (Apple, Creative etc..) The BBC streams most programs in episodes, so you can join up several half-hour episodes into one long program if you wish.
I then listen to these programs on long flights or drives. ( I drive 19 hours to Atlanta once a year, so these programs really help to pass the time).
When I am stuck in Salt Lake City, or Detroit or wherever, I can still catch episodes of Sherlock Holmes or Poirot, and save them for listening later. It just makes life a little better.
So imagine my chagrin when I bought a new Sony Vaio, with all the bells and whistles imaginable, only to find SONY had incorporated a pathetic sound card, which only allows recording from the built-in microphone. With no way to turn it off. Somehow the ace marketing people at Sony have figured out that all the Vaio is good for is to play DVDs, or download "songs" from somewhere. In fact, they seem to have overlooked that not all their users play "games" and listen to iTunes. Their beautiful Vaio has been reduced to a child's toy.
I also have recorded "music" from space satellites, and the calls of whales and songbirds, all of which are available by listening to NASA and nature websites.
I hate to pontificate, but Sony should remember that it is not up to them what people do with their products. In fact they are stifling creativity when they make these poor product choices.
I am also upset that the capabilities of the sound system are not spelled out in the product advertisements. You don't find out how crippled the computer is until you have brought it home. Then you find that you can't easily partition the hard disk because Microsoft has decided to put the recovery data halfway down the disk, so you can only split the 750Gb disk into two equally large disks. So you turn off the recovery feature and repartition the disk to make sense. Then you load all the programs and data from your old laptop, which takes hours, then you find that the computer has the cheapest possible sound card from SONY. Decision - do you send it all back or try to find a workaround? All time and money that does not make sense. SONY should do it right the first time. Why bother to pull a cheap trick on the sound? If someone is going to spend $1300 on a fabulous computer, why shirk the $10 extra and put in a regular sound card? Or, tell me up front that I will be getting a huge hard disk, fast computer, gorgeous video, but (Oh, by the way) the sound card is the cheapest we could find.
And let me make the choice before I buy it.
But thanks to Mr. SmileySince1993, I may have arrived at a patch that will serve for now, but the edge of satisfaction has been effectively dulled, and I will caution all my customers about considering a SONY. Sony have decided that customers are not entitled to record what they want to do, but can only watch (SONY) videos and download (SONY) music.
Bull.
Thanks again, Mr SmileySince1993.
Chromian -
Most laptops on sale today use the same sound card as Sony does in the F series
There are very few laptops out there that use a different sound card.
-
Thanks AVMAXFAN,
That's sad I think. But there we are. I guess I'll have to keep my older machines going as long as possible.
Chromian -
Just noticed a (very) small design flaw in the placement of the Audio and Mic Jacks on the side. Both jacks are recessed a descent amount into the side of the machine under the palm rest meaning that a thick audio jack (like my techkink 3.5mm to component cable) wont fit in the whole way.
Just means the laptop only takes thin and medium thickness jacks . . . . (there a joke in there some where)
No biggie just thought id mention it. -
Does anybody know is the Best Buy model (VPCF226FM/B) has the premium display?
My old F11 broke down and they are giving me store credit. I would like to stay with the Sony F b/c the performance is great. My only issue was the noisy fan, which seems to be a non issue with the F22 under normal use. -
Hi Guys
Had my VPCF22C5E for a couple of weeks now - really pleased with it overall - very fast, quiet, looks good and should last for a decent time. Only a few negatives (apart from the UK price obviously):
1. Had to manually seat the keyboard on delivery (not a biggie & probably a transit issue) but not what I expected.
2. The keyboard is a bit of a fingerprint magnet (I went for the black one).
3. Can't register it on the Sony UK website as they haven't updated the list of available models yet (bad).
4. Keyboard skins show on the UK website but are not available (yet?) - Sony Style say that they will be available end July/August.
4. Cannot order CTO online through a Sony Centre (unless you go in and do it in person) - the Sony Centre were not aware of this.
As an aside, I managed to get a 5% discount from Sony Style, but they wouldn't go any further than that on a new product line.
Now I have a silly question for all you clever people - I paid extra for the Premium Screen and I love the screen on this laptop, but how do I actually KNOW that I have a laptop with the premium screen? Is there a simple test, or is it a case of having to show it someone with experience of all the different Sony screens? I know this sounds totally daft, but I would really like confirmation that I got what I paid forAny suggestions welcome!
Cheers
Matt. -

@ddebon
While what jpride might be correct, I am not entirely sure that the premium screen is the ONLY screen offered in USA. There is no indication of the display type by Sony on US sites. But rest assured even the lower grade screen on the F22 (which you will NOT be getting most likely) is also better than the F13 crappy screen.
@matt24uk
First of all congratulations on the new laptop!. Coming to the screen, unfortunately there is no such test. But if you post detailed impressions of the screen we might be able to help you find out. Tell us how good the blacks are, if the colors look natural and most important - if it has above average horizontal and vertical viewing angles. Basically like an IPS screen. If yes, then you have the premium screen.
-
@matt4uk
I just received my F22 today with its 1080p VAIO Display Premium. I was mesmerized by its vibrant colors and good contrast. texts are sharp too, while the viewing angles are almost IPS level. Looovve the screen indeed especially that i was used to my acer timelinex which had a SHlTTY screen.
As far as i know the VAIO Display Premium is a matte. The VAIO Display Plus is glossy.
I'm gonna upload pictures soon -
^^
Yes i had forgotten about that. The Plus screen is not Matte. So MAtt24uk check if your screen is matte or glossy. -
-
Thanks for the information guys. Well, the screen is running at 1980 x 1080, so it is not the basic screen; must be either Plus or Premium. The overall impression is that it is the best computer screen that I have ever used. As to matte vs gloss, again I am going to sound like a complete technical failure here, but I am not 100% sure - it is certainly not quite as matte as my old Thinkpad screen, but then it's not got that horrible "shiny" & reflective look of the base level E series in the Sony Store. I think I'll conclude therefore that, on balance, it is the premium screen
Cheers

Hi guys,
I recently got my F22 and loving it. Having used to my Acer TimelineX 13.3" (shltty netbook-quality screen), I'm in love with the 16.4 1080p VAIO Display PREMIUM.
However there's one thing that caused me a concern... I prefer Google Chrome over IE9 cause it's faster and lighter. The IE9(64-bit) is a much heavier program and loads web pages slower, though the scrolling of pages is the best in any browser out there (super smooth, like kinetic scrolling in iPad, iPhone4).
As a default, the Display setting is at Medium 125% for the whole windows 7 UI, which is more convinient than the Small 100% setting. IE9 follows the 125% zoom in the display settings but Chrome doesn't, it displays pages at 100% unless you change it manually on the browser's settings. I find this tedious if i have to change the display zoom setting every time a visit a new page since Chrome only sets the zoom setting on web pages you've set before, for new web pages, its using the deault 100% zoom
Anyone knows a solution? Or maybe I'm just overlooking a certain step in chrome to make it 125% for all web pages?
Thanks -

2nd review about US F2290X model I bought 2 weeks ago.
1. Very good display quality. Vaio Display Premium!
2. Very annoying fan noise when heavy multi-tasking and need full cpu power in quiet place like library. -> but with my early posting's solution, it can be tolerated and overcomed.
3. I also bought keyboard skin from sonystyle.com but it is somewhat thick and harm typing sense and feel. It makes hard to typing. Danger to fingers!!!
4. I knew its weight but 3.2 and heavy adapter still some tough thing to carry this notebook to library or cafe.
-> so I want to also buy the new vaio Z2 !!
5. Overall, screen quality itself cover all flaws!
6. Notebook is perfomance, weight, screen is essential I think. (I am programmer)
This is best of 2 fields above.
And also its good to get Adobe Photoshop and premiere elements for free!! It is about 80~150$ out there
