Has anyone pre-ordered it yet? I've just placed an order today, for the 13-inch version in silver with i5, 8GB RAM & 256GB SSD. Got 4-year warranty for £0.01 and free Ethernet-to-wifi adapter and HDMI-to-VGA adapter. Besides, I got 7% student discount & will get further £70 cashback for going through Quidco. :)

I hope it doesn't suffer from the wifi issues Pro 13 had, which made me return it.

Wait, the Flips are available for preorder? That's awesome! Where? How much are they asking? Last I heard they'd only released prices in Japan and weren't taking orders yet.

    I take silver.
You are right. Warranty wasn't free. It cost same 0,01€ here too :)

There was a little bug in Finnish Sony Store: At the second page was "Ethernet Wi-Fi- and VGA-adapter" -option price: free. But when added to the basket, total sum raises 60,00 eur...

A tip for your next purchase : Always call them and buy the laptop, I did that and got a discount of 50€.

Just simply make a phone call to SONY and ask to buy a Vaio, at the end of the purchase ask a discount and they will do it. It worked for me.

Now I just have to wait like everyone else here ;(, except the guy from the video ;)

    15 inch multiflip
    i7 , 512 SDD , 16GB RAM , GE force 2 GIG 2880x1620 LED
I was hoping to use the grafics card for an external monitor too but then I heard that HDMI only supports 1080P. This laptop doesn't seem to have any other ports so I guess I will never be able to use any high end monitors.

I was looking at the Samsung 27 inch LED Syncmaster S27B970 2560 x 1449 it has DVI display port and HDMI. I confirmed with Samsung support that the HDMI in will only take 1920 x1080.
So since there are no laptops with DVI that leaves display port and I don't know what the limit is on that but my Sony won't have it anyway. Well I'm not willing to wait until a better laptop comes out because my old Dell is about to die any day so I guess I will have to settle for a 1080 27" monitor .On the upside it will be about half the price of the Samsung. I was thinking about the LG 27" IPS LED 27EA63V.
I just have to confirm it is HDCP compliant I saw a review that said it wasn't but the US website says it is. Without HDCP the monitor would be useless for PS3 etc.

Thoughts on if these upgrades are worth it for the US config? Planning to keep machine for a long time..

    i5-4200U-->i74500U = $150
    256GB SSD SATA-->PCIe = $150
    128gb to 256gb is a steep $200 already...

Also, fyi, picking the AC wireless option adds 2 weeks to shipping estimate =/

I would suggest you to take the corei5 it is maybe 1.6ghz but with turbo boost ON it can go up to 2.6Ghz
and take 256SSD, if you buy a 128 you will get around 120Gb (my desktop has a 128Gb, and I really have 119Gb...) and with windows 8 installed you can subtract an other 15Gb SO you will have only 105Gb.

It only my opinion, waiting to read other's

Great to hear from you others..

    THE PERCEIVED FREEBIES
Also just preordered (13", i5, 8Gb, 256Gb, black) and saw the "free" Ethernet and VGA dongles.. Put an order with both the "free" Ethernet and VGA dongle as well as the free extended warranty. Called afterwards some sales reps up and they said it was an error on the Scandinavian websites and that it was an old offer. Had to cancel the order and reorder the configuration. Hopefully it won't be too delayed.

    THE PROCESSOR
I chose the i5 over the i7 based on recommendations on the vaio pro (almost same parts) and it is also showed that the i7 have a real-life added performance of 10-15 %. And then I thought whether it was worth the extra high premium, given that I would only experience peak demand in 2-5% of the time and then waiting that extra 2 seconds, 10 seconds or whatever is rather OKAY and would give time for a sip of coffee as well.

    A CASE AND THE STYLUS
As for the case ; I too think the vaio pro case is absolutely classy - however have you considered the vaio duo case with room for the pen on its side?

Just order a 13a i5 8gb 256 gb pcl. Im not too worried about battery as this model should last at least 7 hours. Hopefully the fan noise isnt too loud while watching youtube or light gaming. Also hopefully my laptop doesnt have a defected wifi and if so, hopefully it can be fixed. If it isnt, then i always have a 30 day return policy.

    I ordered the 14" i7 with 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD.
Just checked, delivery in Belgium is still 12 november :D

The reason i chose the 14" above the 13" is the ethernet connection, upgradable RAM & SSD.

Actually i was planning to buy a Yoga 2 Pro, but that QHD screen was holding me back...

It looks like the WIFI ISSUE still persists in the Flip version :(

Check this article out: Sony VAIO Flip 15 review: Sony's new convertible is cheaper, bigger than most

"For one, we sometimes had trouble maintaining a solid connection over WiFi. Other times, we were connected, but downloads proceeded at a snail's pace. Interestingly, we struggled with connectivity even while the VAIO Tap 11 and other computers thrived on the same network."

I was really excited when I saw this new product. And I wanted to buy the Vaio Duo 13 until I found out about the WIFI issue. Now I am skeptical about buying this one as well now that the WIFI issue isnt even fixed in this new laptop.

    What do you guys think??

See heres the thing. One website says that theres a wifi problem, while others dont even mention wifi in their review (im guessing that there was no problem with theirs). Also, one website says the battery life lasted about 4 hours while another says 6 hours (pretty sure both had same specs and 15a). So, Im not getting worried about any problems yet until consumers actually get it and use theirs which should be around oct. 22-23. I live in the us and mine will come november 25. :(. So I still have time to cancel my order if i want to :).

    Some questions:

    - does anyone know if there will be a battery sheet as well?
    - did anyone yet test the power consumption? (reviews?)
    - what's the input voltage needed?

Bought a 13A from the UK site.
The glitch with a £50 charge for the the "free wifi adapter" is present.
I emailed them to ask them to add it to my order and they said they can't but that I could cancel and then phone them to reorder. Reordering (assuming they'll then add it for free) means missing out on Quidco/TCB which is more than the cost of the adapter :/ ... maybe I'll just have to leave it...

Did anyone else manage to get them to add it for free with an online order?

Hope the battery on this will be close to the Duo 13!

    why did you phone them?

I would just leave it there (for free) and in the end it's there problem if you have it on the receipt?

The glitch is that it is marked free but when you select it, it adds £50 to the order cost.
Therefore I placed an order without it and emailed them to ask them to add it to the order for free.

The other alternative was maybe to order with it and then ask them to discount the order £50. Though then altering an online order may invalidate the Quidco/TCB cashback.

I tried to do it that way, however the only thing that came out of it, was that my order was delayed one day (could have been more if I had waited for the refund to enter my bank account), since 1) The sales person couldn't change anything on my internet order and it had to be cancelled. When I tried to give my order over the phone, the Sony guy said that it was an error on the website and that the current discount is the extended warranty.

So when I took the chance at putting an order in with the Ethernet and VGA-dongle, I had to cancel it, because it couldn't be taken out seperately, and place a new one. Luckily they hadn't drawn any money at that time.

I ordered mine from polish store with 4 years waranty. Strangely 13" was much cheaper than 15" so i went with 13" i5 128gb ssd 8 gb ram. I also tried free ethernet/vga but it was about 50eur, and after calling to infoline I could only cancel my order, or leave it.
I was shocked by the first review which said that you have only 60gigs free on that drive, I will try clean stripped install, or buy bigger drive ( same cost as upgrading)

Regarding external output - I've seen that its possible to get 2560x1600 on external monitor with Hd 4000 using HDMI 1.4 cable and some hacks, so it should be possible witn HD 4400

I'm tired of stuff being made in China.

When I buy a Japanese made product , I expect the product to be made in Japan.

Are you prepared to pay more for it to be made in Japan though? Even if you are, most people would take their money elsewhere if the price was higher and Sony are very aware of that. The competition is so fierce and everyone else uses Chinese labor it's a tricky position for them, so I can't really blame them. Besides, China is not really the issue, it's the QA and checks that are put in place. China builds can be fantastic, just look at Apple (mostly). It's also worth noting that items being made in the country of origin are guaranteed to be brilliant build quality necessarily either.

I ordered from the UK as well, I asked about that stupid adapter and was told that the glitch was that it was free. It should be £50, which is reduced from £60. They told me that it was a glitch that would be fixed overnight, but 2 weeks later I see it's still there *sigh*. So it seems like they won't give it to you.

I too was hoping for Duo 13 battery life, but have you seen the only Flip 13a review so far? (ars technica I think). They measured light internet use at 6 hours 50 mins if I remember correctly, so it seems like it might not be as good as the Duo. That certainly seems to fit (no pun intended) with the weight of the laptop compared to the Duo (1.3Kg vs 1.1Kg) considering all the thick aluminium in the Flip, but we will see soon I guess. I should point out however that when I asked Sony directly about the battery life of the Flip 13A they told me 9h, but I wonder if they took that from the info about the Flip 14A, hmm...

I was more than a little put off by that review, despite taking it with a pinch of salt because they clearly didn't 'get' the design. I am a little worried about the fan noise and Wifi issues, but like I say - at the moment I am still willing to give it a shot. Sony do seem to have a general issue with those two things on many of their laptops. A shame really since their consoles usually don't suffer from fan noise, but that's a completely different company I guess.

I've become a big fan of "made in Japan" electronics. They always seem to give me the best for the money even though they tend to be expensive.

My "made in Japan" Fujitsu tablets are great. I don't mind paying extra money for quality products.

I expect my Fujitsu tablets to last another 5 years (so 10 years total).
    .

BTW, I don't think any Apple laptop or tablet could hold a candle to a "made in Japan" Panasonic ToughBook or ToughPad.

You're comparing apples and oranges there though (pun intended :p). The real question should be: Can a Toughbook be made to the same standard in China for less money? I'll let you decide... but the answer is yes. I don't like or agree with that economic truth, I would like to pay more and get slightly better, but that's the world we live in. Although it's also true that it's getting more expensive to make things in China now too, to which I say yay!!

okay, so they are made in China,
so now the question is , are they safe from cyber espionage?
I also discover that Sony has two ODM, fhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quanta_Computer, and Foxconn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
