I go my Flip four days ago and I love it.

BUT I currently can't start my flip since like three hours, I guess the battery has a loose connection...
If I will open the Flip to check this, will I loose warranty? If so I won't do it...

@barney12345: Did you ever had this issue again?

    Hello,
I am debating between buying the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga and the Sony Vaio Flip 13A.
After I decided to go for the Lenovo, their customer service was the worst!
I am now thinking, maybe I should cancel the order (because it is estimated to delivered when I am leaving the US for few months) or maybe to buy the Sony (which hopefully take less time (than 4 weeks).
The only thing is, I am worried about the fan noise. I read a lot about it and I wanna know, since I can't return it, how bad is it? should I buy it? I want a convertible laptop of about 13" screen and active digitizer, and these are the two laptop I saw in this category (and light as much as possible).
    Help me decide.
    PLEASE!

    Thanks

You think Sony's customer service is better?!

If you want a 13" tablet , there aren't that many with active digitizers. The Fujitsu Lifebook T904 should be coming out soon so you should look at that as well.

Listen, I am leaving the US on February 19th, so I can't really wait.
I need a laptop, with a tablet feature, not a tablet with a laptop feature (that's why I don't want the "Duo 13").
The real question was about the Sony, is it really as loud as make it impossible to study and sit in class and annoy you, or is it like a background sound? Can anyone compare it to, let's say, Dell XPS 15z (that I have now)?

About the Fujitsu, are the reliable as Sony and Lenovo? As good as they?

    Thanks!

Any word on a fix for the intermittent touch screen issues?

I've updated the BIOS to R0250DD, I made sure to follow the upgrade guide to Windows 8.1 to the "T", I've used the Sony calibration tool on the support site but I cannot get the touchscreen to work for any extended period of time. It will work correctly for 30 minutes then fail, I have to rerun calibration to get it back... this is very frustrating as many other users have pointed out.

Now that I'm done venting... just curious if any news has surfaced as I have not been taking an active approach to fixing this in the last week or so.

@Scrannel, good question, I took pictures before I returned the machine and just checked the Serial Number. It is my machine but is just so strange with two profiles conflicting and now having cosmetic damage. I have since been on the phone and escalated the case, currently waiting for a call back from the supervisor which will probably be Monday. Unbelievable customer service. I have just sent an email for a refund.

I have had my Flip 14 for about a month now and have for a while been dealing with an issue with the keyboard. I cannot use any key combinations - longer than 2 keys - that include the Shift key AND either the Ctrl or Fn key. I have brought this computer in to my local VAIO office/store/thing and left it there for a week. I get a call back a week later saying that they have done everything they can but it is beyond their power to fix it. They have notified the main Sony place and that they are working on a patch.

So can anyone else replicate this issue? Easiest way to check would be to type out a line in Notepad or Word and then press Shift+Fn+LeftArrowKey (Fn+Left = Home) and see if it selects from the cursor back to the beginning of the line. Now do the opposite (Shift+Fn+RightArrowKey from the beginning of the line), and repeat a few times. If it works consistently then you don't have this issue. You could also go to your browser, open a new tab go to a website close the tab and then try Ctrl+Shift+T to re-open that tab (this will not work in Internet Explorer).

Please let me know if you have this issue and what country you are located in, I am very curious to see how widespread this issue really is and try to raise knowledge of it. (btw I am in Canada).

Have you also had the touchscreen-issue before the bios update? Did the new bios change anything about the fan behaviour?

btw: our flip 15 does not have the touchscreen issue or at least i've never experienced it.

Sony did release a youtube video apparently showing their quality control, but they must feel pretty confident considering that they offered 4 year warranties on the early orders.

Did you have the touchscreen issues before the update? I haven't had any issues so far on Windows 8.1, but I haven't updated the BIOS yet either and according to someone else in the thread the touchscreen not working is a known issue related to the BIOS update.

Annoyingly the Sony support section is a complete 404. Definitely no update for me tonight.

    Hi All,

I just updated my flip15 with the latest Intel 4400 Driver OEM. (10.18.10.3345)
I don't know if anyone made it here, but i find that everything is way faster , sharper, snappier, very surprised !!!
Sony will just not let you install it, have to do it manually , if anyone wants to try , please be aware that this driver is not officially supported by Sony !

    goto intel : http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23405/a08/Win64_15338.zip (64bit version)
extract it, then go to device manager , search for the intel driver, right click, choose : update driver , then choose : i have a disk, search in your extracted folder :the Graphic folder , then select the igdlh64.inf

    should do the trick !

If anyone try it , i'd much apprieciate their feedback

I took the plunge - ordered a custom i7/8 GB Fit 14A, and shockingly, it arrived in less than a week. I just booted it up.

Any words of advice regarding updating, order of updating etc? I heard Windows 8.1 breaks a lot of stuff (including some of my software I use, so I don't want it anyway). So I don't want that. Should I let everything update otherwise, or do I need to do certain things manually?

    Thanks!

Congrats. First run all the Vaio Updates, and then all the Windows updates. Check back through the thread update the BIOS, I am not sure how to do this but there are some very helpful people on the forum. Cross ref you vaio drivers with thos on SONY esupport site. Make sure everything is work well. The first sign of trouble ir dissatisfaction, I recommend you call Sony Customer and ask them to transfer you to Tech support for help. Then when all is good upgrade to Windows 8.1 and run vaio updates again followed by Windows updates.

If you have any problems within the first 30days, make sure Sonybknow about it and return the laptop within this time frame. This will ensure your purchase is safe for a new replacement or a refund so you can buy another one.

I say all this from experience, see page 131, but there is alot that Sony dont say or help with and then you run yourself out the 30 day return / refund period and get stuck with a defective machine.

Good luck and hope all goes well

How you can obtain Windows 8 iso for clean installation

If you would like to do a clean install on your Vaio Flip, and do not have the iso of Windows 8 or 8.1, you can get it this way:
    http://superuser.com/questions/593366/where-can-i-download-a-legitimate-windows-8-iso-image

Briefly, you go to the MSDN site and identity from the file name of the iso that you want to download:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sub...ensions=.iso&PageSize=10&PageIndex=0&FileId=0

For example - this is the one for 64 bit Windows 8 (standard, "not Pro" version)
    File Name: en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso
    Languages: English
    SHA1: 1CE53AD5F60419CF04A715CF3233F247E48BEEC4

Then what I did was google the file name for download url. I ended up using a file from Google doc.
Check the SHA1 to make sure file is un-altered.

The iso was then used to make a bootable USB, which I used to do a fresh installation of Windows 8 on my Flip 13A.

I would suggest going on the site (Sony) that's specific to your machine and just read through all the updates. One will need to be done before you got to 8.1. Look, I just went in a store, bought a 14A -- went on the site for my machines and, after reading through, just updated away. Running 8.1 and it works fine. The BEST way is to update your Vaio updater and let it tell you what to do... of course, I did not do that. You're going to love this machine.

I wanted to post my great results with the 15a.

I've got my setup and dual booting Windows 8 & Ubuntu. I turned off secure boot, shrank the main windows partition, and installed Ubuntu without a problem. Everything works, sound, wifi, touch screen, etc. No problem whatsoever!

I was unhappy with only having 2.4Ghz, so I purchased this Intel 802.11ac card on Amazon. I used this tutorial to take the bottom off, swapped the network cards, re-assembled, and it immediately started working in Linux. I haven't tested in WIndows yet, but I'm not expecting any issues.

I hope that this helps, let me know if you have any questions. Everything has gone better than expected.

I'd just like to comment on the fan thing, because a lot of folks want to know what's going on with these Flips and it's been significant enough for some current owners to return their machines and some potential owners want answers before buying.
The fan *noise* is a mostly subjective issue (read on) so you won't hear a definitive answer from me. Here's what I have noticed and my opinion on the issue :

    1) The fans that Sony have installed in the Flips have audible motors, compared to many fan motors from other laptops that only produce "wind noise" (or a wooosh if you will). These Flip fan motors emit a whining sound, similar to a hair dryer (not as loud of course, but comparable in sound).

    2) Before the very first BIOS update, the fans seemed to come on at light CPU loads, and they came on at full RPM (like a hairdryer on HIGH, but not as loud of course).

    3) After the first and subsequent BIOS updates, most owners have reported much less fan activity, meaning the fan doesn't come on under light loads anymore, AND when it does come on, it spins at variable RPM depending on the load (or CPU temperature). At lower motor RPM, these fans are not quiet but very tolerable for most users (me included) ; like a hairdryer on LOW (but not as loud, haha) And here you have the highly subjective situation of what is considered "noisy" for some and what is "acceptable". I can't answer that, except for me. I am not distracted or bothered by low ambient noise, but I know people who can't tolerate it and others who will notice and *put up with it*, more or less. Very subjective.

    4) We have a member whose fan motor kept on revving at max RPM following the BIOS update, under light loads. Turns out the CPU temps were up over 80C at less than 50% CPU load. This Flip needed to be returned because it was severely overheating (unknown cause, but possibly faulty thermal paste application).

Objectively : if the Flip has a recent BIOS and has no underlying overheating problem, then the fan noise won't get anybody kicked out of a library (someone asked about this a while ago lol). It shouldn't turn any heads at the office either, during presentations or whatever. The newer BIOS allow for better fan regulation apparently, so less fan activity at light CPU loads and variable RPM, hopefully proportional to load, which means less noise under most conditions...
Why did Sony choose fans that have *whining* motors ? I'm sure somebody regrets that decision very much now. Is this noise a deal breaker ? From reading people here, I would say a small percentage of people would say yes. I don't mind the sound of it (noise) myself.

    Hello!

I just got my new flip 15. I love the look and feel of it! But have not used it yet. Question is about updates . . .

I followed the quickstart guide -- so I did windows update -- OK. (did it twice in a row, and one more update the second time! go figure)

Then I ran the Vaio Update. OK, but I got an error message! "Cant't find the name of Intel ICD OpenGL driver." Then it says the following did not update: Intel HD Graphics Family / 440 Update Version 10.18.10.3316. So I tried Vaio update again, and the same result.

My next step would have been to upgrade to Win 8.1, but I have not done that yet -- I do not want to move forward with that if the graphics driver is messed up. Any suggestions on what to do next?

    Here are the specs . . .

    4th gen Intel® Core™ i7-4500U (1.80GHz / 3.00GHz with Turbo Boost)

I had the touchscreen issues on version R0240DD which is why I updated, in hopes of correcting the problem. I have not had any issues with the fan since purchase. I must say I have not put the system under any heavy loads or stress tests, but regular use has not produced any abnormal fan speeds / noise.

My major hurdle is the touchscreen! Tonight I reverted back to BIOS R0220DD to see how the system behaves. I'll post an update with any changes in behavior.

Never mind. I think I figured it out.

I went to intel's "driver update utility graphics" and ran their diagnostics. Turns out I already have 10.18.10.3379, and says "Your driver is current". Since the number of my current driver is larger than the one that the error message says the vaio update cannot locate, seems there is no problem.

Still, fresh out of the box, following Sony's instructions, and getting a confusing error message, that makes no sense when you shell out almost $3K for a computer.

Hey guys, I have been using my flip 13A for a couple of weeks now and with the fact that I can use it as a tablet, as a note taker and of course as a standard laptop, i've been using it A LOT. I mean it is on like 15 hours a day, not in a row (with pauses and suspensions and sometime ibernations), but still... hence my question: do you think with this big use I will consume my battery? Beacuse my previous laptop in a year and a half complitely lost the battery and I don't want that to happen to my flip...do you guys think I should reduce my use? Thanks a lot

How much battery is left at the end of the day? When it's below 30%, I think you will wear out your battery quicker. Perhaps you can try if you can still work with a dimmer screen. Make sure all unnecessary things are switched off. Usual suspects can be BT and the Intel Smart Monitor, unless you do use those.

@Scrannel: Just some anecdotal evidence. I have a netbook that is on the charger most of the time. After almost 3 years ther battery is still in good condition. Back in the days of NiCad batteries, you had the risk of memory effect, but with LiPo that's mostly gone. Doesn't mean that the memory effect is guaranteed to have vanished. But nowadays deep discharge is a bigger risk than trickle charge.

I have been working in a 1600x1050 laptop at 100% scaling until now but I will buy a Vaio Flip 15A soon but I have to decide about the screen resolution.
Can people with 1920 and 2880 versions comment their experiences with font size, scaling issues, optimal viewing scaling and so on?
1- Is it 1920 version at 100% scaling too tinny to be comfortable for reading (websites), programming, 3d software?
2- Is it 2880 version at 200% too large? Does it always scale perfect in Windows 8.1 for high dpi aware applications? There shouldn't be any artifacts because it is a 2x1 bitmap scaling. Why is dropbox bottom menu failing at scaling? Is it hidpi aware but poorly programmed as adobes? Do I loose to much working space at 200% scale? Will applications/GPU/CPU performace penalty be noted at 2880 for CAD?
3- Can you comment which applications are failing scaling in windows 8.1

The 250 BIOS is available for my model and even though the release notes state it should fix touchscreen issues, it does not.

I have been having good results reverting back to the 220 BIOS from the 250. With about 2 days of decent use I have not had any touchscreen issues nor am I experiencing any fan issues. Hopefully this keeps up because I was on the verge if getting rid of this machine...

For anyone having issues with the 250 BIOS and the touchscreen you can get all the older BIOS versions from the Chinese Sony site, I couldn't find a link on the US site.

I bought the 2880 version but things get really small so I put the resolution on 1920. In other words I do not need the 2880 version but bought it.
You can put 2880 version at 200% but I guess in every application you will have to change to 200%, cumbersome I believe.
I also use an external 1920 monitor and that works only good with the laptop in 1920 as well. Because if you put the 2880 version at 200% things on the 1920 get way too big.
Maybe others can add to this because I'm just a little fish with little knowledge.

Just wanted to mention that my Flip 14's wifi was great at home but really stunk at my office. I'm far from the router at work and don't really have a solid wifi signal, got constant drops, couldn't connect at times. I bought a TP Link Wireless N Nano USB adapter for $12 and the signal is much improved. I get NO drops now, the signal reads 4 to 5 bars at my workbench whereas before it would be 1 or 2 bars. Wifi signal went from -80 dBm to about -65 dbm.

The TP Link is great, it's a very tiny nub and barely protrudes from underneath the overhanging lip of the computer. A USB dongle is not an ideal solution for everyone but I figured this would suffice for me until when or if Sony ever updates the driver or a patch for their stock wifi card (I'm on the Broadcom, maybe others with the Intel 7260 have had better luck).

I was wondering if you guys were having similar problems to mine. My 14" i7 flip is pretty much new out of the box and I've added some basic programs (chrome, VLC, dropbox, etc). I've noticed that with only Google Plus video chat and paused VLC video, my CPU is running at around ~40% and my memory usage is ALWAYS above 50%. I don't know how the heck the computer is using >4 gigs of ram (I have 8 GB) even when I'm doing simple web browsing and nothing else.

I suspect it's all of the the Sony bloatware. Any tips on how to fix this are greatly appreciated. I've attached screenshots of my task manager (yes the list was very long).

Hey tomeli, are you able to prevent the flip from changing its resolution back to 2880 when you change the flip from laptop to tablet mode?

It looks fine to me, only google hangouts uses a lot of CPU. Blame the crappy software engineers at google. Disable/uninstall it and try again.
WIndows 8 uses more memory if you have a lot to spare, I don't think u should worry about that.

Hello folks - Question for the 13a flip owners specifically...are you all happy with your purchase? I've been trying to decide for a few weeks now whether to go for the flip 13 or the thinkpad yoga. The lenovo is a bit more expensive and would have to be purchased direct whereas I can buy the flip from John Lewis (uk department store) who offer a fantastic 2y warranty service so I'd be confident of any issues being resolved fairly quickly...

I suppose the main question is about build quality/fan issues. Do you guys think the flip will hold up over the next few years or do you find yourself treating it with kid gloves? I want something durable which the lenovo definitely is but the downside is obviously the hefty weight! And are the fan issues still persistent or are they now tolerable? Thanks guys...also, another poster mentioned a sony rep informing them a "refreshed" flip 13 will be available at the start of Feb...what do we think, hardware fix for fan issue? I did call them this morning but the person I spoke to hadn't heard of anything like that...all opinions welcome!

I had both a 15a w/1920 and 2880. The 1920 was nice because you dont have to deal with the resolution flipping between the usable 1920 scaling and the unusable 2880. It;'s especially annoying if you use multiple monitors. seems like most windows software doesnt use the new windows scaling features so if you are a desktop user the 2880 resolution is way too small.

But if I had the choice and the price was the same I would get the 2880 because for me when I used the 1920 as a tablet it had annoying grey bands that would overlay the screen at different tilt angles and at the angle I would view it while sitting on a couch was degraded. Whereas on the 2880 there are no bands. The viewing angle is better. So if $300 difference doesnt mean anything to you then go 2880 run it in 1920 (it still looks super sharp) and deal with the scaling and resolution flipping issues and hopefully they get fixed.

How much memory is in use when you reboot Windows?
Can someone with a clean install report how much memory is in use after a reboot?

I don't think it's the Sony bloat. That's mostly harmless.
The biggest in the list is the Sony Vaio Care Agent (VCAgent).
You can also see that Chrome is very greedy.

When you click on the Memory Title, Task Manager will sort on Memory.
That's an easy way to find the biggest memory hogs.

hi guys i ended up getting my flip 15a ,,

    Intel® Core™ i7-4500U 1.8 GHz

    8 GB 1600 MT/s DDR3L-SDRAM

500 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm)

    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 735M 1 GB

    39.5cm LED, 2880x1620

i love the machine ,its a tiny bit heavy but i dont mind .the screen to me had a slight yellow tint but i have got rid of that by calibrating it ,,it now looks superb.............the colours really pop and reds look like red unlike my t902 were the colour gamut isnt that great....after using this 2880x1620 i dont think i can ever go back to a 1080p display ..its the best display i have used ....really easy on my eyes .i use custom scaling at 170% and it suits my needs...no fan noise like a lot of people ..slight backlight bleed in the right hand corner but not that bad i will send it back

i love the accuracy of the n-trig and have used artrage, sketchbook pro,si and a few others and all work superb ...love the accuracy ..and this is coming from a t902 wacom device ...the maching is very very well made and i love the style ..i was goin to get the duo 13 for its superb battery life but not sure what to do ....ill explain and hopefully someone can help ...

battery life with these setting arnt that good ..so a bit of a dissapointment ..maybe im doing something wrong ..im getting about 3.30 to 4 hours ...maybe its the fact i have the hybrid drive instead of an ssd..i was goin to get an ssd and install it myself .maybe wont make much difference with the battery life ..what do you guys think ..i thought turning off wifi and all the other things would make a difference but it doesnt ..very strange

    brightness at 30%
minimum processor state on battery 35%
maximum processor state on battery 50%
    blue tooth turned off
    wifi turned off
    geforce card disabled
    indexing off

any help would be appreciated as i was hoping for atleast 5 hours but 4 and under isnt great...i may be tempted to send it back and get the duo 13 for the amazing battery life...problem is when you have had this superb display its hard to look at anything else ..

Indeed. And you also noted that you have Kaspersky running. That's the Security Suite with antivirus + firewall, right ? If someone were to use Windows Defender only instead, the RAM usage would be even lower. I am a computer security person, by the way, and think highly of Kaspersky products. What I've been saying for years to people who ask : use a reputable antivirus - or suite with firewall - that you feel comfortable with, even if it is a little more resource hungry. Kaspersky have had good products for years.

@rathergetayacht : I look at your 4 screenshots there and I don't think we're seeing where those nearly 5 Gigs of memory went (60% of 8GB). Perhaps the applications using most of it weren't as active when you got around to doing all 4 screen captures.
If you do as jiyong suggests and click on the memory tile, you'll sort the list from most active (top) to less active, so just one screenshot would show us the big RAM consumers when the total number is high.
60% with video chat and VLC is definitely too high, so there must have been another RAM eater active at the time..

I just flipped to tablet mode and the resolution stayed on 1920 but when I put it back in laptop mode the screen went automatically back to 2880, weird behavior.

As I'm traveling this week and not having a second 1920 external monitor I changed laptop monitor settings to 2880 and size of all items 125% , these settings work out fine for me, able to read everything comfortable.

Here is a screen with nothing on and cpu usage at 0%. The thing is that there is no one thing that's eating the RAM. It's a bunch of random crap that seems to be the problem. I have dropbox and skydrive running in the back for syncing purposes, but they're not the problem on their own.

Can you direct me to any instructions where I can learn how to do this? Since this is a hybrid solid state/HDD is there anything I need to do to make sure that the OS installs on the proper part of the hard drive (as I understand the OS boots from the solid state).

I'm no expert and I bought this computer with upgraded specs so I could have a fast machine that just works. It's starting to seem like that was too much to ask for from Sony and the infuriating windows 8.

I think that really depends and it looks like it's starting to get a bit of a myth. I still have all the VAIO programs installed, just removed Symantec and installed Avira.
Updated to Win8.1, installed Pokki (Start Button replacement) and Open Office and after a reboot I get 1.3 GB in use and it fluctuates (without me doing anything) up to 1.7GB in use.

Just some more things. I never registered a Windows Live account and disabled the Intel Monitor in the Avira Firewall and disabled the Intel Smart Connect.
Looks like there is no need to remove the VAIO programs.

Something I've noticed about the crappy WiFi. If I set the adapter to Preferred Band 2.4GHz, Windows Task Manager reports the connection as 802.11n, but on 5.4GHz or Auto, it reports as 802.11b. The difference is 11mbps on b, and 20-24mbps on n. Of course, it's not the full 50+mbps I should be getting. I think there are still some issues to sort out with the drivers.

To be honest, I didn't bother with a clean installation in the end, and I'm an IT contractor. You don't need a clean install. Just uninstall all the crapware and junk, upgrade to Windows 8.1 and the latest BIOS (most of which can be done either from VAIO Care, the Windows Store, or from the "Add or remove programs" tool in the control panel).

If you don't like Windows 8, I suspect you'll change your mind after spending some time with it running on a touchscreen. It's perfect for touchscreen use.

    Andy - I got the 15 with 750/16 setup, NVIDIA 2GB.

With casual use (internet, MS word, excel) and some minor gaming I get 5-7 hours from mine. I've got the brightness set to about medium.

    Hi,
    I have the 15a , 16gb , 512ssd, hidpi screen.

If I run laptop in economy mode without wifi / Bluetooth/ screen at 60% I have at least 6/7hrs...

In standard I have about 4/5

In performance : all options on high .I have 3/4 hrs...

The optimus mode don't seems so great ... And I 'd wish windows could switch alone from economy to performance mode without user input. But that's another subject.

I use this laptop for work. Doing lot of Photoshop , etc... Need to max all options in order to have a good work station... Battery in this mode isn't great at all... But I reckon if u use it between different modes (not what I am using it for) u can get more than decent battery life....
