If you're willing to give up some screen real estate, maybe swap it for a 14a? 14a seems to get a couple hours more battery life. I can get like 6.5 to 7 hours on my 14a i5 in balanced mode.

Not sure if the difference in price is worth it for the 2880 screen, but when I had the 1080 I noticed it had annoying viewing angle banding. When I had it in my lap on the couch at certain angles it had thick banding as if you were at a bad viewing angle, so i had to annoyingly move it to view clearly. It would be banding at say 45 degrees but not at 60. The 2880 is 100% clear at all angles.

I went to the Sony website to try and order a new Flip 13, model SVF13N27PXB except I wanted a 512 GB hard drive, instead of the 256 it came with. The person in chat told me they could not do that, and that they were just selling the models they had, and not customizing any more since Sony has sold their Vaio division to another Japanese company.

hi back to all of you guys.
    i did digging information.
learned that 13" with i7 model will not come to my country.
so that also i could not find someone to bring it from the USA in the bag.
so i have to buy it at weekend the 13 model with i5 processor 4gb memory and 128ssd.

there is a general question in my mind. in laptop mode. near the hinge there is foot to stable the device. is it safe. it is different that the place where monitor is located is stable the device?

what shall i do should i buy it or wait for another product.
i had read that most of flip models were fixed fan and wifi problems with bios updates. i got information from community forums.

also i have my school E-Mba beginning this monday. so i need a computer in my dorm to connect to Virtual Classes.

It's not bad, but if others are getting 6, I want to know why I am getting a significant amount less.

as ive said before adding a ssd gives you around another 20 to 30min battery life...win 8.1 i think can add a bit ...once you have had the 2880 its hard to go back to the 1080p and if its got banding or bad angles its a no no for me ..ill keep the 2880 i think..people who are saying they are getting 6 hours i honestly cant belive

    Hi all,

I have narrowed down my choice of a 13" ultraportable to the Sony Flip 13A, Sony is currently doing a promotion to offer cpu upgrade at no additional cost, so I will be buying this the next couple of days.

Is the memory or SSD upgradable? I am thinking of buying the Flip with the cheapest SSD and then buy a much bigger mSata SSD to upgrade myself, is this possible? I believe the memory is soldiered on board, I guess that cannot be upgraded?

    Thanks in advance.

I finally purchased my flip 13A with i5, 4gb memory, 128gb ssd model.
the tester device in black color in sony center was very quite. but the one i got has a loud fan. and in high performance mode web page refresh time is too way slower than my old friend U300s with win 7

i checked and it has latest bios. i did switch it to quite mode from vaio control center. and tried to use in balanced mode. there is still fan noise and when it began to lower the npise there is still a buzzzzing noise
but i will try to use it and get used to it. i was bored to got devices and return them because of their failures.
if any fix come i will be following.

also may need something for wifi adapter.
a fake wlan adapter connected to my desktop got fully signals but this flip connects with one level and cant load any pages.

Crucial M500 (up to 480GB) and Intel 530 (up to 360GB) seems to be easy to get hold of, and in theory at least should be a simple upgrade. The speed of these drives compared to the Samsung is perhaps a bit of a question mark.
Only place I could find Samsung M2 drives (with a bit of waiting time) was here: Samsung XP941 M.2 (NGFF) PCIe Solid State Drives

How do you get Crucial M500 in M.2 form factor? When I look on the Crucial website, I don't see any.

Yeah, not bad at all - I do reckon speed also is more like mSATA though (but then again, for real-world use I'm not sure if it matters that much). If you do go ahead and try, let us know if it worked!

Memory is soldered for 13A, I'm afraid. SSD is upgradable, but it's pretty difficult to find the ones with M2 factor (not your average SSD model).

Is it possible that the only change is Windows 8.1 now pre-installed?

I've returned my recent 13a and bought finally the "refreshed" (I hope). It will come the next week.
By the moment win 8.1 pre-installed and SSD pcie are the refreshed parts of it. I hope that sony have listened our voice about the device to change something more...

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me with a configuration & accessory option.

    1. Clean start.
What exactly gets removed if you select clean start?
I'm assuming all this stuff gets removed: Introduction : VAIO Software | Sony
    Anything else?
How about drivers? Would they need to be downloaded manually?

    2. Ethernet & VGA dongle.
I'm assuming the VGA dongle is just a bog standard hdmi to VGA adapter. Is this correct?
I'm not clear on what the Ethernet dongle is. It seems like its basically a mini wireless router which gets plugged into the AC power brick.
If this is true, can the laptop and the wireless router be powerded by the AC adapter at the same time?
If I want to be able to setup a wired connection from LAN port to the computer, is my only option to buy a generic USB to LAN adapter from somewhere else?

    Thanks

    Hi Navidnouri,

the problem was solved for me by uninstalling the Nvidia driver and installing original sony 735M driver.

For your temp question, I have not played games with this laptop for now :)

I bought a 13a about 1 week ago. Today when I opened the screen I noticed a giant crack in the touchscreen from the bottom left through to the top right. Absolutely no signs of damage or impact. This thing has barely left my desk since purchased. Extremely annoyed, as you can imagine - but also suspicious that the crack started very close to where the magnet holds the screen at the back on the bottom left. I'm concerned these screens aren't flexible enough to withstand the strength of the magnets in the long term (or in my case, the short term!). Has anyone else had any problems with cracked touchscreens? I'm now about to start the inevitably painful and slow process of having the unit repaired by Sony, attempting to have them cover it under warranty.

I've been playing Homeworld2, SupCom:FA, XCOM:EU and FTL lately. So far, the temps peaked at 75C for me. Haven't seen any throttling of the CPU - it peaks at 2999 MHz when it has to. Used CPU-Z and CPUID HWMonitor to get the readings while playing. Gameplay has been ok so I hadn't had a reason to use GPU-Z to see if the GPU clock is throttled. Of course, I'm on AC power when I play. If on battery, throttling will surely occur.

Except for Homeworld2 which I play at 2160x1620 (it's old enough to run at that res with everything set to high), I set the games to use 1920x1080 resolution. So that probably helps lessen the performance hit.

My Nvidia drivers are from the Nvidia site. Currently on version 334.89. No issues so far with this version and the previous one which I also got from the Nvidia site. When I do install them, I select custom install and select a clean install rather than an update. I don't mind re-entering my settings.

Haven't had the BSOD issue when unplugging/plugging.

i did a clean install and the BSOD went away, i wonder why didn't i clean installed this time! :D

about the temp: i checked furmark, the GPU didn't throttled just continued to run and gone above 99 degrees so the system auto powered off and i just pinned the power safety switch to be able to turn it back on again!
I didn't played so much games with it by now, only DotA2, i don't know if you can test this game! (F2P). it might be a game driver incompatibility issue!

or i just may send the laptop for service to see if there is any temperature related issues!

Uninstalled the elan touchpad driver altogether, and downloaded the one from the Sony website. Now it's working like a charm. Am planning to do the same with the wi-fi driver as well as the auto-rotate software, both have been very buggy lately.

I guess it's just a standard VGA dongle.
    I haven't tested it yet.
    VGP-DA15 : Others : VAIO™ Accessories : Sony Asia Pacific

The wired "adapter" from Sony is a mini wireless router.
It plugs into the USB port of the power adapter, so you can still power the VAIO.
If you are at a place where a wireless signal is not allowed, you will have to buy an ethernet to USB adapter.

You can see the USB port here (photo 4):

If you haven't tried it yet, before you start the game, match the desktop resolution to the in-game resolution. For example, if you play the game at 1920x1080, set your desktop to 1920x1080 first. Do it using the intel tool. You'll have to create display profiles for native res and game res so you can easily swap between them.

Some games drive the system crazy if the nvidia (in-game) res does not match with the intel res used by the desktop.

Ronafios, someone in an Amazon review ( Amazon.com: VAIO Fit 14 | Flip PC Black: Computers & Accessories) mentioned that his Flip 14 screen developed hairline cracks around the hinge point after 3 weeks of use. That's definitely abnormal. I would have it sent back for an exchange or refund. also as a PSA I would also be real ginger in flipping the screen going from laptop to tablet. I always pull up and disconnect from the bottom of the LCD where the magnets engage, instead of flipping the top back. Who knows how long the LCD screen can last with flipping back and forth.

Just a heads up: My Flip 15 is set to arrive Thursday.
Configuration : I7 4500U, GT735M 2GB, 2880 x 1620 screen, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD. Will optimize and test for 3 days using this default configuration and then clean install Windows 8 Pro and update to 8.1 Pro on a 240GB Seagate 600, as well as install 8GB extra RAM(12GB total for now until another deal on 8GB DIMMs), and an Intel 7260AC wifi adapter. I will test that configuration for 3 days as well to to compare results.

This is a question for anyone who has been following customization options on the Sony stores (does not seem to be available in every country, e.g. as far as I can tell, US does not seem to have it).

For the last couple of weeks in the UK, Sony has been offering promotional £160 discounts on the i7 upgrade cost.
Do they ever switch this to promotional discounts on SSD upgrades? (I don't need i7, but what I would really like is £160 off the price of upgrading to 512GB SSD)

Also, are Sony telephone sales reps ever amenable to haggling on the price?

    Thanks

about a month ago they were offering free upgrade from 128 to 256GB SSD's meaning you could get an i5 with 256GB SSD for £1100 rather than the off the peg price of £1200

How did you managed to get the 4% discount code?? I tried Google as well, didn't find any :(. Anyway, used TopCashBack and getting £56.07 back, better than nothing I guess. Also gone for the i7 free upgrade too, but sticking to the 128gb SSD, got my eyes on a Crucial M500 m.2 480gb for £190 (10% ebay discount, maybe personal use only)

Sorry to ask again, does it void the warranty if I do the upgrade myself? Also, how do people clone the SSD over, I do know how to clone, but I don't know how to clone 1 m.2 SSD to another with just 1 laptop.

    Thanks
