Tried to install the original Intel driver, it would not load.
Also, since I booted on a linux key, I can't activate the WiFi and bluetooth anymore, even after a full restauration of the system! Anyone has a clue about what's going on?
-
No other device EVER had problems to use WiFi from the bedroom (HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S1, S2, iPad1+2, Motorola Xoom) but the Vaio has.
I am not saying it is bad, but not as good as I was used to.
There is no difference between Windows and Linux as far I can tell. -
i7z # shows everything including turbo mode and CPU c-states -
I've read a few comments about flex in the keyboard. Not had an issue with this. As someone who writes articles and books, the feel of the keyboard is critical to me & this one is a beaut & I can see me getting even more words per minute than my old one.
Not a fan of the Touchpad still. When in Explorer, for example, I keep dragging folders to the wrong place when all I was trying to do was move the pointer. Will keep with it for now. I suspect I'll get used to it & adjust in time. I haven't even tried playing with any settings yet. Worst comes to the worse & I'll get a remote mouse for the times when I don't want to be touching the screen (though that's not always effective when trying to use the scroll bar, for example).
Overall, very happy with the machine. -
I think that you should try the one under preinstallation. At my site (the German one) there are no drivers, so I wrote to Sony again...twospirits likes this. -
Is anyone experiencing issues with the touch screen freezing in tablet mode? I've installed all available updates including Windows 8.1. However when trying to use the touch screen - mainly in Internet Explorer I think - it freezes after 5 minutes or so - every time I use it - and I have to either switch off and back on again or resort to using the trackpad. This happens in both desktop and app version of IE.
-
how log can yours go in ondemand/powersave? -
-
Now speaking of the video driver, I checked and what is strange is that they have a updated driver on the US page with a date of Nov 6th 2013 with version number 9.18.10.3257 for the Intel HD 4400 and checking my system stats on the 13a it states driver date of July 29th 2013 same version number.

OK, another update...
Have now tried the computer with the higher performance setting. Unsurprisingly this brought the fan to life - though perhaps still not as bad as before the software updates. The higher performance did allow me to run a game app via Android without any lags (some when using battery alone, but fine when plugged in).
I was at a cafe though and the Flip lost WiFi wheras my smartphone was fine. It's also a bit disappointing in some parts of the house.
Think I have also experienced the freezing in tablet mode that has been mentioned too.
So not as happy with the machine as I was a few hours ago, but still not unhappy with it either! -
Thinkpad yoga or sony vaio flip 13
Hi
I have a sony vaio flip 13 on order and ready for pick-up at local TNT center
it is the max version with core!7 with stylus and 512GB SSD
BUT
All the vaio FLIP Fan issues + better expected durability of thinkpad (eg. godzilla glass) makes me look at the thinkpad yoga (I also have kids 2+4 years)
SO:
1. Display Thinkpad yoga vs vaio flip 13
Can anyone tell me how the to displays preform compaired to each other
- the color of the yoga pro 2 did not come with great reviews and the Flip display got good reviews here but less good elsewhere
2. advice what to chose vaio flip 13 or thinkpad yoga?
The price for thinkpad yoga core!7 with pen and 256GB SSD and the sony vaio flip 13 will be the same for me in Denmark (I pre-ordered the Flip 6 weeks ago) -
What WiFi network adapter Flip's have inside?
-
to enable silent mode under linux:
echo 'silent' | sudo tee /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/thermal_control
this reduces the noise for me slightly, still it's very annoying, I think it could be turned off as well
somehow my cpus refuse to go down below 1500mhz when using the powersave or ondemand governors, not sure why -
I dont think its hard to change the cpu fan settings, after all, there is a dll file called cpufansetting.dll in vaio control center folder. If someone maybe now how to use dll files, one could maybe lower the fan so it wont stay in such high speed on normal temps.

Just a note for flip 14 soon to be owners, and I apologize if this has already been discussed. I bought the i3 model (all Best Buy had) and figured I'd boost the specs a little myself. Oh, my, this is my welcome back to Sony, should have known better.
I went to a local Frys and picked up an 8gb dimm (Corsair CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9). Didn't work. Seems to have same motherboard compatibility as other recent Sony models. After research I read Samsung memory will prob work.
I looked at the teardown on YouTube and got the case open without real damage. Be careful of the paint on the metal around the plastic bottom, a bit where I pried the lid scrapesd off (tiny bit).
Installing the chip, I hosed Windows. I ended up doing a Windows refresh and lost all my desktop apps. After staying up all night putting Office, Photoshop, plugins etc on it, I wasn't pleased. Of course I forgot to setup a restore point. Machine doesnt even boot, just starts and stops with the corsair.
I then turned my attention to the drive. I picked up a 1tb Seagate hybrid. I cloned the 500 mb hdd to the 1 tb with clonezilla. So far so good. Then I went to put the New drive in. It didn't fit. The hard drive in this sucker is thin. Not sure what would fit. I like space over speed, and a 256 ssd wouldn't be my preference. 500mb ssds are way too frigging expensive. So anyway, check the dimensions if you try to replace the drive. I got it to fit sort of, but it caused a bulge beneath the keyboard and put a ton of pressure on the sata connector. It didn't fit.
It made me sad. Booting with the hybrid cut cold boot down to less than 15 seconds. I sighed, hours wasted and I accomplished nothing. I reinstalled all my stuff, including hundreds of megs of Windows updates. Got it back to snuff after the refresh. Then I took it to work and dropped it coming out in the evening. Last point, get a tough portfolio case etc along with your bag. It bent the aluminum and cracked the touch screen. Still works as a reg laptop and crack isn't bad, but I ended up getting the i5 (Best Buy got them in) and because no insurance, going to either try to unload the i3 for a few hundred or bite the bullet for repair (which because screen needs replacement will prob be outrageous) and give it to someone for Christmas. Buying the Best Buy idiot insurance also prob not a bad idea. -
Doesn't insurance cover only "accidental damage". After all you've done, the insurers wouldn't entertain your claim anyway.
-
I looked at both side by side and the Sony Screen, even at 1080p next to the Yoga 2's massive dpi, looked better to me in color rendition and saturation. I like the Flip configurations more (keyboard isn't exposed in view mode) and I like the Sony keyboard better. The Yoga is lighter, looks really nice and I'm not sure if it has Wacom input, because I'm not thrilled with the n-trig for artwork (great for notes). The Sony gives way more bang for the buck, feels sturdier and the screen is beautiful. The Flip 13looks like a nice tablet, very light. The 14 I have is a little heavy (The 15 is kind of ridic at 5.5 lbs, unless its on a table with the super hd+ display, I don't think its the most practical tablet) I've read the yoga2 struggles with pushing out all those pixels.
-
Best Buy covers everything, including dropping it or any other kind of damage you could inflict accidentally. Most stuff like Apple Care etc. does not.

Since Yesterday evening my vaio is defect
The fan made some horrible sounds, like a swarm of bees. Like it in the Video posted before.
But that isn't the whole time, if there are no swarm of bees you can here clearly that the fan has contact with something.
So now i have to make a decission, i have 3 options...
1. send it back and buy a other Notebook - not the best Option because i like the flip...
2. send it back and order a new one - i'm not sure if i can become it to the same Price....
3. let i repair....
today i'm not sure what to do, because i don't wan't to live the next weeks without a Notebook... the last weeks was horrible ;-) -
I'm using the i5 256SSD 8GB Ram and I dont really have a problem with the fan. Its mostly silent and I havent put it into silent mode because I havent found where to do this yet.
I updated windows to 8.1 yesterday but when I want to do the vaio update, it says no updates available and opens an IE window that gives an error. Anyone has this?
Ordered a 32GB usb drive to create a recovery drive as it needs at least 17GB. -

The best option I arranged with Sony is that I keep this unit I have with the defective fan until new Flips are ready for order. They will call me as soon as this happens so I don't have to wait too long for a new one. Also I'll be able to order the same setup for the same price.
BTW that sound is only upon cold boot. So just let it sleep if you dont use it and it should be fine I guess.
However I do think that this should be a warning sign that perhaps all fans will suffer from this sooner or later.. -
That would be a nice Option. Did you call or wrote a mail?
Beside, tonight my Notebook was in slepp-modus and it disturbs my sleep. I don't know why, but it wakes up at night? -

Has anyone had a good experience with the multi-flip? Is anyone going to keep theirs?

@kenetik : maybe flips use new 7mm sata drives instead 9mm? you should be able to get 1tb hybrid 7mm drive
@ornigon: after moving recover to usb drive, is it possible to store that content on other drive (and use that usb drive) or do i have to leave it leave it there? -
It's a great design, lovely screen, nice enough keyboard etc etc but too many gremlins. I've emailed technical support and will see what they come up with but I can't afford to spend that sort of money on something that doesn't work properly, can you?
Jury is out just now, but it's probably going back! -
In reply to kenetik about the Flip 14 upgrades ;
Hi, newbie here. Flip 14A is on the way. I too am planning to upgrade the HDD (ordered with the basic 500 MB spinner). I'll be going for SSD and am waiting for Black Friday to get a 480-500 GB (Samsung 840 EVO or Crucial M500). From your experience, it sounds like only 7mm drives will fit.
About the RAM : I'm getting the Flip with the basic 4 GB as well, and was planning on upgrading it later next year perhaps. Sorry to hear about all the trouble you've had. One thing I did get from the specs posted for the Flip : memory is of the "L" type, which means Low Voltage (lower than 1.5 V, usually 1.35V). The Corsair chip you bought is 1.5V so not low voltage which is, I'm guessing now, why the mobo wouldn't have it. Not sure where you got your information about Samsung memory being compatible (not saying it isn't), but perhaps some other low voltage chips would do, like the Patriot #PSD38G1600L2S or Crucial #BLS8G3N18AES4 ? This type of RAM is also known as "ultrabook memory". Could you tell us which chip you have in there now (the 4 GB low voltage) ? Just to check for latency and precise voltage numbers. Or if someone out there has the 8 GB chip info, that would be great too.
Either way, I'll be opening the 14 Flip up in a few weeks for the SSD upgrade and could post about the existing RAM and whatnot -
Did someone find the solution to the problem where the touchscreen stops working sometimes? I have this problem to. I put the laptop to sleep and wake it to get it working again.
Anyone tried to connect the flip to a second screen using HDMI- VGA cable? I tried connecting it to my beamer but it didnt seem to work. But maybe I'm doing it wrong, its my first time with windows 8. -
About hybrid drives : The Seagate 1 TB is 9.5mm so it won't fit. Western Digital now makes a 7mm 1 TB hybrid drive in a partnership with SanDisk, but availability is unknown at the moment. Toshiba sells SSHDs as well, but the 1 TB is 9.5mm like the Seagate.
I wonder where Sony got their 1 TB SSHDs for the Flips. Probably WD, because no one else seems to make them thin enough. -
@ornigon and @ Mark - thank you for the info. This is my first ultrabook type machine, so the upgrade issues I had were due to a) not being aware of the 7mm standard for sata (it is indeed a 7mm drive) and I knew there were wide variations in dimms, just took a chance. My guess about samsung memory was uneducated after reading the Z forums, the low voltage requirements are probably the key. I have an i5 with 8gb now, so I'm maxed anyway. The 4gb chip in the Flip didn't have an obvious marking for manufacturer etc. So I'm sorry I can't give you more info.
As for the Flip overall, it's very easy to get into by removing 10 screws and removing the rubber feet and strip across the front. The mem slot and hdd are right there, no need to remove keyboards, etc to get to them. The 14a (and I have now had 2) doesn't suffer from a loud fan, it's very quiet. It doesn't get too hot. Playing Zen Pinball in tablet mode usually heats up machines I've used and the 14 stays very holdable. Even with the Intel graphics it's great for Photoshop, my main use I have an Xperia tablet Z, and the main reason I got the Flip is that I fell in love with the Z's screen.
On the i5 model, I have had the touch screen flake out a few times. It's an obvious software problem, putting the machine in sleep, restarting, or enabling/disabling in device manager all bring it back. This didn't happen once on the i3, but I didn't upgrade that to 8.1, not sure if there is a connection, but thats when I noticed it on the i5.
The main weak spot in the 14a is the 5400 / 500 mb disk. When I look at Performance in Task Manager, I regularly see it hit 100% and cold boot is relatively slow. I saw a Force 480 recently for $399, so I guess I'll just wait a while and put in an SSD when ~500 gb is practical. I would rather a hybrid, but the 7mm 1tb you mentioned Mark, will prob cost a pretty penny when initially widely available.
I played with some of the included software last night. Dragon Assistant is interesting, it's pretty limited in it's commands to stuff like Twitter, Facebook, Skype etc. Sony gesture control is only useful if you aren't using the thing as a tablet, your hand needs to be pretty far back. Art Rage is nice using an n-trig pen, and vaio paper works really well for notes. I wish they included the pen like they do with the 11 inch tablet pc.
Anyway, thanks again guys. -
After stalking this forum and others for several weeks now I have decided to take a leap of faith and got me a 14" vaio flip with i5 500gb sshd and 4gb ram.
After all my research I would just like to summarize the info on the net up til now:
1. The flip has a very loud obnoxious fan. Some 14" models did not exhibit this falt. It is (somewhat if not mostly) fixable.
2. The deck hangs out a little which can obscure the USB ports and be uncomfortable. About half the posters noticed this but said it did not bother them.
3. The inside components are easily accessible. The hard drive and ram are both easily replaceable. It is important to note that the hard drive is 7mm thick instead of the usual 9.5 and the ram MUST be low voltage (1.35 volts).
4. The screen is awesome
5. The pen is pretty good though a bit laggy (seems to have almost no lag in OneNote 2013)
6. LOTS of random windows partitions take up a lot of space.
7. The 13" and possibly the 14" and 15" have an issue where when you open the monitor it touches the desk and lifts up and generally doesn't open up enough to see standing (though that is what tablet mode is for
If I see any other conflicting information I will try to post a summary here. Hope this helops
P.S. I ordered on November 16 and estimated ship date is November 25Clerish likes this. -
@kenetic ;
No worries, I've been doing a crash course in ultrabooks so just getting acquainted with low voltage RAM and slim high capacity hybrid drives myself. I do have the previous generation Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB hybrid in my little HP DM1 notebook, and W8 (now 8.1) boots from cold in less than 15 seconds. I did install a clean W8 in that one though, so no bloatware.
The 14A Flip I've ordered has the i5 as well ; the i7 (dual core) is way too expensive for me and offers only a moderate boost in speed over the i5.
Thanks for the overview of the underbellyI have seen the YouTube teardown vid as well. I'll try and be gentle with the paint. I haven't decided if I'm going to clone the HDD over to the SSD, or make Recovery media and use that to install on the SSD. If I clone, I've read that Macrium Reflect Free (or paid) or Paragon's "Migrate OS to SSD" ($20) both would do a good job ; other programs can do it as well, like Acronis.
Just last week, NewEgg (Canada for me) had the M500 480GB for $329 and the Samsung Evo 840 500GB for $359. They've gone back up this week, but I'm hoping for a great deal soon, on Black Friday.
No idea what the WD 1TB hybrids will sell for, but I'm hoping they'll stay close to the Seagates if they want some of the market...
Glad you're enjoying the new i5 Flip 14A -
-
Only thing I would add to your summary is that some users are reporting touch screens occasionally becoming unresponsive during use (including me!
The screen is indeed a lovely thing to behold. -
It's weird. I had 3 Momentus XT's over time, all 7200 platters. I've seen a lot of reports saying in practical use the 5400 sshd's delivering better performance. Guess they optimized.
As for SSD cloning and cloning in general, making a bootable usb for clonezilla (turn secure boot off in flip bios to boot from usb) takes a few minutes and with usb 3 I think the whole process took me less than an hour. The hdd on the Flip has 7 or 8 partitions as mentioned above. Youll find the partition you get for C:\ is 433gb. The biggest system one is about 30gb.
Enjoy your pc! -
Guys I think I will order the 13A and just hope mine won't have incredibly loud fan, since reading the forum I came up thinking that some machines are loud, others are in the average...
But if mine will be unbearebly loudI I will be able to return it right? There are no problems in returnig machines right? I never did that before...thanks -
For the cloning, I'll keep reading on. One advantage of doing it with Macrium or Paragon's utility is that I may not need extra bootable media. They can both clone *hot* systems, directly from within Windows. I have a USB 3 dock so that's where the SSD will be for the process.
Question : have you created the recovery media yet ? If so, what size of flash drive do you need ? I'm guessing 32 Gigs (16 too small). I have a 32G SD card I got cheap.
The Flip is for our daughter. College soon (yikes). But I will set it up, and test drive it for as long as I feel necessary)
-
- Ship it back to sony for no charge other than return shipping
- Return it at any Sony store (If you're near one) -
I just ordered a 13 inch Flip (i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD). Got 10% off with student store and 5x points, so basically I will the digitizer pen for free with the points.
I really hope they cure the fan issue soon, otherwise I will just send it back. Hopefully I won't need to do that. -
Returns are free if you're based in the UK.

-
I doubt that some are more silent than others.
They all use the same hardware, they all use the same bios - for now.
someone posted this cpu fan diagnostic software by sony:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-download.pl?mdl=SVF14N13CXS&upd_id=8595&os_group_id=24
could anyone try it and report back what it does on our models? -
Guys my brightness control (fn+f6/f5) doesn't work. The popup shows but the brightness doesn't change.
After waking the flip up from sleep I can't change the brightness. Neither the FN combo, nor via the settings menu. Adaptive brightness is off.
However after a reboot it works, but then the trackpad settings resets themself, which sucks big time. And you can see that if I put it back in sleep and want to use it again the same things happen.
How can I fix this? -
Posted in the hardware section but maybe someone on this thread can help
Edit - sorry about the formatting on the specs below, It was all spaced out until i posted
I am thinking of buying a vaio multi-flip 15" but want the best power i can get for multi tasking, I currently have a vaio with an i5 8gb ram and it bogs down quite a lot
I have looked on sony's site and the best i can spec it is i7 4500u 1.8 ghz cpu and 16gb ram
I have also looked at the macbook pro which i can spec to i7 2.6ghz
Will the macbook offer much better performance?
Will the vaio i7 offer much more performance than my current processor as it seems to fall behind in some areas but i do not know how relevant these are?
Below are the specs for the 3 different processors from intels website

The graphics performance is significantly better on the MB Pro as well. Price aside, I personally think the only compelling reason to get the Flip instead of the MB Pro is the combination of touchscreen, the digitizer and "transformation" abilities that the MB lacks.
