Did anyone else notice this? I went onto Sony Style US to build my EC model. In the UK, you had the option of either 1600x900 or 1080p for the 17.3". Not in the US apparently. Only 1600x900. To me, if it's 17" and it has Blu-ray, then 1080p should be available. I wonder why? Will it be a late availability or are they leaving it off because they feel it could cut into F series sales where 1080p is an option?

It works as far as unclogging the system, yes. As for performance, you won't notice that much difference. It'll feel snappier but the laptop is powerful enough that the Sony bloat doesn't bog it down too much. It's nice knowing you have a nice clean system, though.

It's variable depending how lucky you get with your GPU chip, mine runs stable at 640/950, yours might be more or less. I don't run it that high - 620/860 or 600/800 is what I generally play games at. No point using more power than you need.

The HD screens haven't been available in the US on any of the E-series models since they were launched, as far as I know. Why, I have no idea..

I was able to order a 15" 1080p E off Newegg.com after it came into stock on Wednesday for my g/f. They had it on sale too at $784 for the i3/5470/BR/500GB version. I couldn't imagine buying a 15"+ machine w/ 13x7 resolution. Should be here by Monday.

I have the EB16FG (i3/4g/5650/1080) and i clock my card to 645/925 and anything higher crashes games after some time.

I really wish i didnt have the full hd screen as the high resolution makes some games unplayable on anything but low and i hate running at non-native res.

I have one question to ask. Does anyone think that the EB not the EA is compact enough for daily usage for school and also is it considered a slim laptop?.

Newegg is having a huge sale on laptops, I got a 1080p E series Sony for $100 off plus free shipping. There was another one that was $175 off but it's sold out.

Well. It's about the same size as the 15 incher I used to have for school a few years back. It worked. But "back then", 13 inchers and netbooks wasn't anything you could get.

I'd imagine "nowadays" netbooks being popular in classes that aren't about computing (aka doesn't require software like Photoshop etc) but just making notes, as they are tiny and cheap. If you get a 15 incher for classes requiring just note-taking, you're risking that you'll stand out a little.

Though as far as 15 inchers goes, the EB series is certainly aesthetically pleasing. Not much wasted space on it as they've managed to put in a num-pad even.

Does the EB have a backlit keyboard? I asked at SonyStyle and he had no clue. Also I was told by an online customer rep that us Canadians will be getting a new EB on June 24th featuring more options like 1080p resolution and 1 GB graphics card. Sadly he also said we won't be getting the smaller EA.

But yeah if someone knows about the keyboard being backlit or not, that would be great.

They have recently just refreshed the EB series and they barely changed anything. I wouldn't hope that their will be a backlight for the keyboard because after all this is Sony's 'budget' notebook.

has anyone tried overclocking their e series or any vaio that has an i-3 in it using setfsb?

Im thinking the i-3 330m i have must have alot of room for overclocking.

Anyone else having random issues with their trackpad.

My trackpad randomly decides to have a mind of its own. Cant seem to see why but at random times (possibly in direct light or with certains applications) the trackpad doesnt respond to my finger accurately instead jumping around all over when I try and move the cursor around.

The worst thing with this laptop is definitely the trackpad. Why did Sony put those stupid bumps on it. A smooth flat trackpad works infinitely better.

yes i noticed the trackpad problem...the cursor would leap around the screen and not follow what i was doing..however this only seems to happen when on battery power sometimes and if i have it plugged in to the power point on an indian train (i have replicated it more than once).

Strange...but i never really bothered to try to fix it as i always have mine plugged in at home.

It used to do that for me for a short period. I found that the solution for me was to press my finger down really hard on the trackpad while trying to navigate as you usually do and it would eventually start behaving normally again. My last Acer laptop had the same issue.

So I'm thinking about getting the Vaio E for college next year, but I have a couple questions that I've run across.

    1. Is the larger battery worth it? Does it take up too much room, or is it worth the extra life?

    2. How good is the 1366x768 display? I'm in the US, and I've heard some things about a 1080p display option, but there isn't one available yet in the US on the Sony website. Is a 1080p option coming soon, and if so is it really worth the wait?

    3. How long does shipping take? The sony website says about a week when building the laptop, but I've heard some people say it takes longer, like several weeks.

Seems to have quite a few issues when it's on battery I see. Mine has the super-mega annoying high pitch sound and it's getting very loud. So embarrassed because of that stupid sound that some of the people around me could notice. Anyone know any solutions?

Guys any of you ever experiencing any temporary lag on this machine?
Sometimes my laptop would suddenly slows down in terms that when I minimize or opening windows it seems like they are in slow motion. But everything else is normal, like typing is fine, music and video plays fine. etc, just opening or closing windows is in slow motion.
When I restart the system, everything went back to normal. I don't exactly know what is the culprit and whether it's sony or windows issues.

    Hi,

I've finally decided to upgrade my dying laptop after several years of honourable service.

I've decided to go with a sony vaio e series with a 15inch screen.

Going through the configuration process i have gone with:

    i5-430
    320gb
    4GB RAM
    ATI MobilityRadeon HD5650 1GB
    DVD drive

After going through the configuration process i'm left with just 1 decision the screen res:

My laptop needs are mainly for downloaded videos (mp4's and avi's), (watching them on my laptop and tv) though i do play the game on my computer but its rare, i have a ps3 for most of my gaming needs.

Due to i won't be playing blu-rays on the laptop, just downloaded videos (anime, tv and films, most at 400p, some at 720p) is a 1920x1080 res overkill?

Will the downloaded shows look ok, or will the high res make it look blocky? (much as sd can look on a hd tv)?

Sometimes i put the laptop through to my crt tv instead of hd tv, will i need to lower the resolution in this case for the tv to handle it even if i use a vga to scart converter?

I guess i'm asking will 1920x1080 work and look good for my laptop needs, if the shows look better than in 1366x768 i'll go for it. or will the 1366x768 display be more than adequate, and better than the higher spec?

If the higher res display will be too much for my requirements, should i go down to the 5470 graphics chip? or is the 5640 chip still the way to go?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to get this decision right.

    Thanks for your help.

MKLASSE.....im glad to see someone else has this problem...ive only just managed to sort it out even if it i s a temp fix.

I noticed one of the processes was using up a small amount of cpu(cant remember which one it was) but it was something to do with the mic...i have disabled my mic and the problem seems to have gone away, not ideal and i re-enable it when i need to.

Tell me if this works for you..i noticed that when in the sound section of the control panel(win 7 here) clicking the recording tab shows my mic and it seems to be on all the time in this window i.e. the level is going up and down even though i havent clicked on anything to start it, not sure if this is normal.

Also, it is not just the windows opening that is in slow motion, i have also played a couple of games (mass effect 2 and dow2) that actually played in slow motion!! not bad fps or stutter just slow motion

nope i tried this one (the "mic" things <~ same as CW ones) it doesn't change a thing.
but somehow, the High pitched noise" only happens at the beginning (i bought this laptop 2 weeks ago, at first the high pitched noise was unbearable, but now, it's quiet (i wonder how could this happen)

btw, i was worried about overclocking the vga, does it have any side effect, since i'm going to use this laptop for gaming.

    thanks

Not really, Sony have undervolted the GPU, so there's really no way that you can run it at high enough clocks that there's any risk of damage.

I'll try your way next time it happens and see if it works. It doesn't happen a lot, just randomly which is kinda weird since I didn't do anything unusual when it happens.

About the microphone, it seems mine is also on at all times.

doraemon : so this slow motion thing also happened to you?

My E-Series is on the way, and was wondering if anyone had tried the semi-clean install?

Is there anything extra I need to do before I start it, or any major problems with doing this on the E-Series?

Nope, just follow the guide and you're all set. The process you need to kill is "VAIORecv.exe" rather than what it states in there.

My customised EA2 laptop is ready and waiting to be sent to me but Sony wont send it until the official release date. I rang SonyStyle and no one seems to know the exact date. He said probably the end of this week but I go away on Monday so that's not much used to me sadly.

I'm a bit annoyed that I wasn't told it hadn't been released when I ordered the laptop over the phone with SonyStyle

anyone else able to set voltage with amd gpu clock tool?

i have been using it super stable at 645/925 for 2 months but after reading other forums it can go much higher with added voltage(sony limits it to 0.9500) some ppl have reached 10000 3d marks(i get 7400)

I never had any luck with msi afterburner even with the note pad edit(unofficial overclock =1) it would always reset.
    thanks.

As far as I know there's no software method of setting voltage, it's only possible via BIOS - which unfortunately is locked.

need to talk networking. I was looking into getting a linksys simulateous dual n band wifi router.

however the artheros wifi chip in our beloved e series only operate on a 2.4GHz, not 5ghz which would render a dual n band router pretty useless.

therefore I'm limited to a lower performance router. damn

Has anyone had any luck installing the new 10.6 Catalysts? I hear they added the Sony/Toshiba/Panasonic restriction into the installer itself rather than just the downloader as it was previously, but a Toshiba user said they installed it fine. Any luck with Sonys? I'd try myself but I'm a bit tight on bandwidth this month..
