    1) as for the memory, I like both Corsair kits. I have always preferred Corsair. If I was picking I would go with CM3X8GSDKIT1066. Again, I use the 1333 kit but I won't recommend it because it is not within spec nor acceptable to use under your Vaio warranty. With Amazon, if there is a problem you can return as a defect and they even pay return shipping. Fine choice there.

    2) As for the video driver, the card inside these e-series have an vendor ID not recognized by most programs. This vendor ID also is what identifies it as Sony and blocks you from downloading the official mobility driver from ATI/AMD. You must use the unlocked Mobility drivers, like the one I provided, to update beyond what is officially approved and available from Sony. Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic opted-out of the mobility update program - probably because they want to control the driver update and limit support problems from monthly updates. Annoying, but it is what it is. I recommend you download Driver Sweeper 2.5.0 and the Mobility Catalyst 10.8 linked here on the forum. Install DS 2.5.0. Uninstall ATI Catalyst (express is fine) and profiles. Reboot. Run DS 2.5.0 and check ATI - Display - then analyse then clean. Reboot. Install 10.8 again. Now everything is nicely cleaned and up to date.

Thanks campb292 for the information, I will check with our dealer before buying (buying via forwarding mail system) I will see what they recommend also.

and for the Graphics card, is there any performance gain after all this stuff done ?? I don't want to go through all this for nothing :)

Anyone else own a vpcea27fx? Sony is replacing my S series, since their onsite tech damaged it. Am i getting the shaft out of this deal still?

Are all E series non FULL Hd screens the same quality? The FULL HD is available only with Core i3 370m, whereas i get a more expensive model (EA) 14 inch with Core i5 560m. So was wondering if the most expensive EA models without FULL HD have a better screen than the lower priced E models or are all 720P screens the same?

I have seen the 1080P E screen and loved it, but the non FHD screen did not impress me( but that was a lower priced model), so was wondering if the high end 720p screens are better?

A 720p screen is a 720p screen, they're all the same regardless of how expensive the other components happen to be.

I am proud owner of EB1S1E Vaio. I have one question: Is it possible to enable integrated graphics on intel i5?

Sony have customized the vaio so that such changes cannot be made to it. if your concern is of battery life then, i suggest you look into the battery mode in the ATI control center

    Hi!

My notebook came with memory that is rated for 1333 mhz use but it works at 1066. It's a VPC EB2S1E. What can I do to make it run at 1333?

    Hey all.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to replace the network card? The reason I ask is because I have just started having this issue with World of Warcraft (up until yesterday it has been fine). One minute it will be fine then the next my latency goes all the way to over 2000 and everything stops working basically. I either get disconnected or for some strange reason I tab out and it goes fine again for a minute ot two. Now earlier this year I had this exact problem with a USB wifi card on my desktop computer only to find out that it was because it was crap. I replaced it with one that had decent reviews and voila problem gone.

If it comes to it I will buy another one of the USB ones that worked before, I just didnt want to really resort to taking up a port permanently.

    Thanks in advance.

The former model has been discontinued (EA16) You can only get the EA36 now, which essentially comes with a better processor, an updated sound card and different software.

It seems that the new processor for EB-series is i5 460M (2.53-2.93GHz). Haven't found an EB with i7 yet, phew..because my i5 520M (2.4-2.93GHz) is still on the way, and the order can't be cancelled so I'd be pissed if they came with a new model BEFORE I'll get "the old one". Well, computers are always getting old no matter what, just gotta cherish it like a fast aging girlfriend.

Some day next year there's gonna be a whole different lineup, with Radeon 6000-series and Sandybridge, if only (probably) they are modded to mobility versions.. I'll destroy my internet on that doom*d day, so I can't my hands on them.. :) Didn't realize that "quad" is really kicking in..well next time I'm upgrading, there are "octas" in every store :)

Sounds like a warranty issue rather than trying to tinker with the lappy or buying external replacements. If it's been fine until just one day ago it might just be a software issue or something similar. I also know many of my guild friends have said their latency have been very weird lately so it might be blizzards servers fault as well. Note that I play on EU servers though.

But when it comes to wi-fi, there are a lot of things that can potentially up your latency, as you might know. Disabling SPI in router and possibly even the QoS are things you might want to try. Changing which channel your router is broadcasting on is also a thing that might work, in case some neighbor just bought a new router and is broadcasting close to the same channel as you.

Also, since wow uses TCP rather than UDP, you can in windows registry change TcpAckFrequency to 1 (there is a script available that does this automatically, called leatrix latency fix) in order to get lower latency.

    Hi All,
Last week I bought VPCEC2S0E/WI which clearly says its full HD. But when I tried to change the display setting to full HD, it didn't allow. I sent a mail to customer support who replied back thus:
1- Regarding the resolution query, kindly note that the maximum resolution for your VAIO model is 1600 x 900. Therefore you may not be able to reach the 1080. Please check on the VAIO casing if it has a sticker indicating the resolution “HD ready”.

The link below clearly says its Full HD
    VPCEC2S0E/WI (VPCEC2S0E/WI) : Technical Specifications : VAIO and Computing : Sony

Any suggestions what should I do.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Anand

In the main description at the top it does indeed say FullHD which would imply 1080P, however down in the technical specs it does say 1600x900, I'm guessing thats an error in the main description saying FullHD. Generally if your laptop has a 1080p screen then you will have a sticker saying so alongside the intel, ati, windows ones.

If you complain you might be able to get it swapped or something, however since they didnt actually say 1080p alongside FullHD, I don't like your chances :(

    Thanks Johnny,
I talked to the helpline and they gave me a link to graphics processor update. I wonder if it will work (I'll try it when I go back home in the ening)
If its only HD ready, will such updates work to change the resolution to full HD?
Else, I'll try to replace the model which they should do as its their advertisement which seems misguiding. I agree full HD as well as 1600*900, both are written. But one gives more weightage to things written on the top than small ones and that too when the small ones are not complimentary information but contradicting ones.
    Thanks for your inputs.

How did you get to that option? I have a VPCEB17FX. I enter BIOS by pressing F2 on power up. Pretty much the only options I see there are boot order, data and time, and system password.

This model does not have a FULL HD Display. It supports Full HD Display.

    from the link above -
    Resolution 1600 x 900
    Max Resolution External Display 1920x1200

This means the actual resolution of the screen on laptop is 1600 x 900 so you can not see 1080p there. However if you connect an external display which has full HD then you can see 1080p on it. e.g. You can connect it to any Full HD TV using the HDMI out provided on the laptop.
    Hope this makes it clear..

    Hi,
Thanks for the input. But unfortunately, even that didn't work as I tried connecting my TV to it using the HDMI cable and it didn't allow the max i.e. 1080p setting.
Do you have any idea specifically about this particular laptop?
    Thanks once again.

No, the link actually says it has a "Full HD VAIO Display" despite the fact that it doesn't have one. Other models with 1600x screens don't say that. Sony have screwed up there.

You can try to explain this to Sony support, but from my experience it's hard just getting them to understand what you're trying to tell them. You'll probably have more luck with phone support.

If they don't offer you a solution, you can always RMA and get a refund - tell them you're doing to do this and you might get more luck.

    Thanks a lot Mythdat.
I have never done RMA with any product as never felt the need. So, please excuse my ignorance but if I have thrown off the packaging-parts except the hardcover the laptop came in, is that alright? Or, do they want things in EXACTLY the same condition as it was bought in?

Have a look at the returns section here:

    https://www.sonystyle.co.uk/shop/b2...1&uiarea=0&ctype=areaDetails&carea=$ROOT)/.do

It says original box but you should be okay as long as it's packaged securely. Probably best to phone to arrange the RMA just to be sure.

Its not a quad i7 only a dual i7 as it is the 620m instead of the 720qm in the vaio f. (q stands for quad) (m stands for mobility)

its £170 more than the i5 520m and runs at 2.8ghz-3.33ghz

    however, i did find this:
"The performance of the Core i7-620M is on average above the former fastest mobile dual core CPU, the Core 2 Duo T9900 / X9100. In our tests, just the single threaded rendering test in the Cinebench R10 benchmark scored less points. Even the mobile Core i7-720QM quad core is slower in many cases."

    Intel Core i7 620M Notebook Processor - Notebookcheck.net Tech

so the e will soon be faster than the f :S

i also beleive they will release these soon as when you go to customise the e series at the moment, the options are very limited
e.g. (6gb of ram) no other choices
most configs having parts out of stock
and the 14" having no option in the disc drive (only option is blu-ray burner)

So either they are discontinuing the e and selling up remaining stocks or new models are on their way :D

I didn't overclock anything. At the current time, I don't think I will overclock :) I own my laptop for less than 2 weeks. Mods I am seeking now are 8GB ram kit (it will arrive after 5 days) and a 7200rpm hdd (already have it). I wished I go to SSD but it's expensive and I have already a faster one than what come from factory. I will see how much improve I will find after these installed. I don't think they will be a huge improve but will make the computer noticeably faster as I saw in my previous inspron 1520 when I make it 4GB RAM and 7200 HDD.

    As far as upgrades -

    1) A memory upgrade will see very little noticeable or tangible performance boost other than more memory to draw on.

    2) CPU overclock is not necessary or wise on a laptop with limited cooling. The i5 in these, even the i3 ones, are plenty of processing power for anything it might do. An modest overclock of 10-20% would net very few gains in program loading or installation speeds. Even encoding or decoding video would see gains only in fractions of a second. Not to mention power draw and heat.

    3) The biggest upgrade you can do is move from a HDD to a SSD. I suggest the drives from OCZ or Corsair, specifically the Vertex 2. I have a 120 GB Vertex 2 in mine. I can push the power button, load Windows 7 fresh (no sleep resume), click Firefox, see my homepage in 13 seconds. The speed difference is that impressive.

Nope don't see the point really, I overclocked my card for a 3D Mark run out of curiosity other than that once I don't ever bother since the laptop handles everything I've thrown at it so far just fine without it.

If you feel like you need more power from it you might want to think if it was the right laptop to buy in the first place, if you only just received it you may be able to return it and get something with an ati 5870m for slightly more like the MSI GX series, I considered them for a short while except ultimately I hated the case design completely.

Im sorry. I did not know there was a owner's thread for the E-series.
I have the EA 14 inch with core i3. Just came in last week. Ive noticed that the fan is on non-stop, althlough not super loud, but still noticeable in a silent room. Is there somewhere I can tweak the fan settings or is this normal?
Im just an average browsing the net, watching video's listening to music type of user. I dont game so I am not doing anything intensive.

in a silent room, nearly all fans are noticable. dont worry about it. the fan settings can be changed but require altering settings to the system. dont worry about it. unless it is only if its noticable in something like on a train, or a room full of people should you look into it.

Hello everyone! Been looking around the net for a Vaio EB Series forum and came across here. Just wondering about a couple off issues i have come across with mine and looking for info from other people to see if they have had & fixed them or got the same probs. Can i mention them here, or do i need to post somewhere else. I've owned mine EB i3 M330 since April and bought it brand new.

I had this a few weeks ago and I couldn't set up an internet connection in QWA as I couldn't enter the password.

I think ( if I remember correctly ) I solved it by pressing the Tab key ( the one above Caps Lock ) and the keyboard then responded.

A new HDD is no guarantee with GTA4, most likely it won't help at all. For me it runs like trash whether from the stock HDD or from my SSD, it only loads a little faster. I don't know why it runs better from your external HDD. Definitely not because it's faster, an external HDD won't be faster than an internal one because it's limited by the USB interface.

But yes, the Momentus XT is very good. The main improvements you'll see are in startup times and application loading times though (ie when the SSD portion is used), rather than in general usage. But the HDD portion of the XT is still slightly faster than the HDD Sony provides.
