I didn't saw matte black in person to say which better. However I saw the white and I liked it more if you considering white as one of your choices :)

One would think the matte one doesn't have a shiny palm rest, but I don't know. Someone here said that the gunmetal is the best, so take that one.

Stay away from the shiny stuff. I have the shiny lava black one. When you pick it up, there are fingerprints on the back of the display. When you use it, there are fingerprints on the palm rest. When you close it, you fingerprint on top of the last ones. Also the shiny surface scratches. I got it because at the time (early in the e-series) there were no other options other than white, which was out of stock on newegg. They have the matte gun metal black at Best Buy near me and they still fingerprint, but not as bad.

The only bright side to the shiny is you will clean it often and thus not have immense amounts of roaming bacteria.

Hi guys I am coming here hoping to get answers. Sony tech support is useless as far as I am concerned.

I have a VPCEB1RGX and the fan is driving me nuts. It constantly runs at high speed (very loud) even when the computer is not working hard or hot. I did an update with the bios that was supposed to control the temp but it didn't change a thing.

I am a student who spends a lot of time in the library and it is embarrassing to have a machine that can be heard from 20 feet away.

Are your E series machines as loud as mine? Are you aware of any programs or settings I can change that will quiet it down?

Sony told me it is normal but they just don't want to help me

    Thanks

Hey everyone, i clicked on the more info for the color and it seems the matte black is really gunmetal black. Does anyone who have the gunmetal black can tell me if it attracts fingerprints like the lava black? Also, to you guys who have coconut white, does it attract fingerprints and dust?

    Thank you!

Also, is anyone bothered by the battery life of this laptop? I hear most people say they only get 2 hours even though it proclaims 3.5 hours? Do any of you buy the extended battery and if you do where do you buy it at? I see they have it on sonys website but it cost $200 for the battery! I know many dell laptops sell battery on ebay for $70 only but do they sell battery for this laptop on ebay?

I have been looking for a skin for a while. In these pictures the keyboard is not edge to edge, and I notice some Chinese/Taiwan characters on the pictured model. I am concerned this would not fit properly. Most of the skin sites are behind on model numbers and have not gotten e-series specific skins yet.

These are for a Korean company. They said the textures of their skins are from Japan and the assembly, fitness in Korea. The skins I attached their photos for their domestic market VPCEA16FK

I am sure that there is not any different in term of size and style between what we have and what they have.

They have leather, 3D carbon and wood as skins.

14' and 15' physical screen area look different though. 15' has more room for the actual screen whereas the 14' has more empty space

No, I only have this one. The Vaio EA...the one mentioned in my signature.
Both pictures are from the EA. The 15' has the dedicated number pad on the right side.

When I first thought about the E-series, I had it in my mind that I was going to go with the black as well, but, like I said earlier, once I saw the black in store, I totally had a different opinion about it. They didnt have the white model in store, so I just went with gut instinct on what I saw on the web, and I dont regret it.

I'm having trouble installing the latest ATI Catalyst drivers on my Sony Vaio E series. The stock ones are really old and I want to get the 10.8 version up and running.

Does anyone know how to do this. The official ATI install won't work and Sony hasn't released any updates.

    Thanks

    Hey guys,

I'm switching to a new HDD, just bought Momentus XT. Now's my question, how to transfer all the stuff from the old HDD to the new one.
I have an external backup drive (WD MyBook), so it can make useful. Can I do it by Recovery Tool or have to use Norton Ghost to copy partitions?

    Hi guys, great thread.

I've always had Sony laptops and I've lately purchased an E Series with the AMD triple core. It's the VPCEE2S1E/BQ

Usually Sony laptops come with Battery Care Function, but this one seems not to work. There's a program in the settings utility folder called WBCBatterycare.exe, but it doesn't start up, not at all. I tried installing anotehr version of battery care but it's either greyed out, or doesn't stop the battery charging, even when it says it will.

I thought this was a fault so I went back to the shop and got a replacement, but the replacement laptop has the same issue. So it's obviously inherent in this model.

I've tried reinstalling, and installing my own windows and all the required sony guff, I know what I'm doing from previous sony laptops, but still WBCBatteryCare does not work.

Interestingly it doesn't work on my friend's AMD Dual-core E series either. Could the AMD models somehow preclude batterycare from working? Doesn't seem to make sense to me, but that's the only link I can find.

    Any suggestions?

My Battery Care also doesn't work, but I find it normal. Just use Sony VAIO Control Center instead and go to Power Management. There you can use Battery functions.

Alas, it's not showing up in Vaio Control Centre, and that's always the first port of call.

Usually if it's not showing up it's becuase the utilities were installed incorrectly, but that's just not the case. I've installed the utilities correctly on this laptop, as with all previous Sonys. Usually it shows up and it works - the control centre just provides a shortcut to the batterycare.exe, and other programs, from what I can see.

It just will not work, not even on 32 bit windows, which I also tried.

As I said, it won't show up or work on another two AMD E series either, which is curious. It's like the program is incompatible with the architecture, if that's even possible.

    I am totally stumped.

Luckily it's not a deal-breaker as this laptop's crud battery life is hardly worth maintaining anyway. It's more of a UPS to my mind. :D

Why do you need the Battery Care program? It got no special functions needed for battery. If you need information, just use EVEREST, it will show you current Wear level, etc.

You can backup all your important stuff and make a clean install from the recovery CDs.

or using a cloning program if you have many program installed and many files in different folders.

I used Acronis Migrate Easy when I replaced my hdd on my old laptop.

okay everyone. I went to sony store and saw the laptops. I saw how the 14' looks with lava black and coconut white. The lava black SHOWED FINGERPRINTS LIKE NO TOMORROW on the area where you put your palm. The coconut white barely showed any. However, the coconut white looked a bit different from those photos shown from the 2 posters who took pictures of their laptop. I saw the 15.5 matte black and even though the cover of it looks good and shows no fingerprints, the area where you put your palm still showed fingerprints as well.

I saw the gunmetal black and it looks good however, it was a 16.4 laptop that had it. They didn't have gunmetal black for a 14 or 15' laptop at the store. I did not see any fingerprints from it whatsoever from gunmeta.

I think i am going to go with the coconut one now. I mean the matte black cover looks good but is anyone here really that bothered by the fingerprints on the palm area? I didn't know what people meant that much until today when i saw the fingerprinting. Everytime i look at the palm area, it makes it look bad. I wanted a black one initially because it looks professional. Would you guys say white is 2nd most professional and black is 1st?

My matte black one doesn't show fingerpints on the palmrest, because that's matte too. The whole thing is matte. I did see the shiny black one and that was fingerprint heaven, or hell, whatever.

I think white is nice too. However, perhaps white suggests Asus eee pc, or apple, which can be a good or bad thing I suppose, depending on what you like. The Vaio on the lid should avoid any confusion mind you.

I actualy liked the blue E series, but it was too dear for me. :) plus it was also shiny and fingerprinty...

I've never had a laptop with a fingerprint-magnet for a palmrest before. I think it would bother me, yes. I don't mind a shiny lid, but a palmrest would instantly attract prints again. Shiny stuff also shows scratches very easily.

White shiny less so than black shiny.

My brother has a shiny Dell, and it looks kinda dirty all the time...

Of course this is all cosmetics. It's what a laptop does and feels like that matters most to me. I like the E series for it's keyboard, its solid feel and becuase I got it cheapo. If it was shiny I still would've gone for it becuase the flimsy competition sitting on the shelves around it didn't impress; they were all creaky and had horrible keyboards.

My precious new E will probably explode now I mentioned how well-made it feels, but oh well...

Hey do anyone of you play poker on your laptop?

I'm going to buy a 15.5 sony laptop with 1920x1080 resolution. I see the processor they offer for it are

    Intel® Pentium™ Dual Core P6100 processor (2.0GHz).
    Intel® Core™ i3-370M processor (2.40GHz)[add $50.00]
    Intel® Core™ i5-460M processor (2.53GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.80GHz [add $130.00]
    Intel® Core™ i5-580M processor (2.66GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.33GHz [add $230.00]

My question is since i will 20 plus table with it with HEM and TN on, do i need the i5? I have i5-750 processor for my laptop and it works great. The thing is i know someone who has a laptop and he can 40 table without any problems with HEM and TN on. I asked him his specs and he tells me he has a toshiba 18.4 laptop and its the same processor as this default one... the Intel® Pentium™ Dual Core P6100 processor (2.0GHz). He also has 3GB of ram instead of this one which is 4gb. I'm also surprised he told me his hard drive is 5400 rpm and doesn't have any problems. He tells me i shouldn't upgrade it because the default will work perfectly fine. My thinking however is that it only cost 130 dollars to get i5 and the total system would cost between 950 and 1100 depending if i get the default dual core, i3 or i5-460. I am pretty sure i don't need the i5-580.

For sure i will be upgrading

    5400 rpm to 7200 rpm
    2gb ram to 4gb ram

I am just thinking right now should i get the i5 processor. I read online the i3-370 and i5-460 is a very little difference except the turbo boost. But 130 dollars is definitely worth it correct? I need to know by tonight because today is the last day they have this offer for this laptop. Thanks!

Hi guys can you confirm this is the case for the 15.5 Full HD 1920x1080 screens as it's not stated like the 14 and 17.3 models.

I've heard the 15.5 full hd models are ccfl back lit like the non premium F series?

Does anyone own a 15.5 full hd e series who can confirm this?

    Thanks

Hi guys - in addition to my query above please can someone comment on the the following points in order to help me decide on whether to purchase the E - 15.5 or 17.3 models

    1. Fan Noise
    2. Heat Levels
    3.Touch Pad
    4. Max battery life
    5.Speaker quality

I know there's quite a few points there but your time and help would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks

Mine is an EB, core i3 330M; 4 gb Ram, ATI 5650.

1 - Fan noise is very acceptable, I normally dont hear the noise.
2 - Heat is ok as well. It's about 40-42 ( C degree) at idle, with 30-35 is my room temperature. I play game a lot ( Dota, Civilization V, Battlefield BC ...) and it still didn't get overheat yet. ( I dont own any notebook cooler)
3 - Touchpad is quite unstable, sometimes it moves unpredictably but I always prefer using mouse even if the touchpad is perfect.
4 - Max battery life is about 2h30m
5 - speaker quality is quite disappointing, you should buy an external speaker if you decide to get a vaio e.

    - Just double click on the picture to make it bigger.
    - I think the vaio e series comes with glossy screens only. The glossy screen of my vaio is vividly colorful to watch movies but it gets me eye-strained very fast.

Just switched from original WD 500 GB HDD from EB to Seagate Momentus XT, now the laptop works smoothly! Nevertheless, I've already ordered an Intel 6200 WiFi card, because the current one (Atheros 9285) makes problems and randomly turns off.

P.S: Wonder if buying additional RAM would give me something, I play Starcraft 2 and Civilization 5 and both say I don't have enough memory :) (page file disabled in Windows).

This was answered several times the first few times you asked, see previous pages.

And yes, the 15.5 version is LED backlit whether it is 1366x768 or 1600x900 or 1920x1080.

Thanks for the confirmation - i was mainly asking if someone actually owned the 15.5 with Full HD who could confirm it was indeed led backlit - in particular the UK model

Hi guys - Apologies in advance for all the questions/posts but I'm just trying to clarify a few items before I spend £1300 on this laptop - I'm still considering the 15.5 / 17.3 versions but wanted to ask about the trackpad issue -

Many reviews and user comments have said that the trackpad is placed for to much to the left and is generally unstable especially with the rough surface - in not planning on using an external mouse and wanted to get everyones views and comments on these two points?

    Thanks for your help

Most trackpads are off to the left these days. If there was a major fault with the trackpad, everyone would be returning Sony laptops.

Basically a trackpad is personal preference so just go to a Sony shop and try it out.

    Also, why no external mouse?
