I think he means they've actually removed the whole connection from the mainboard.

If that is correct then no, not without making/soldering some sort of new connector onto the mainboard.

    Hi
im definately going to follow that guide on a free day to do a clean install, at idle i believe i have about 90 processes, 33% memory, roughly 1.3gb worth which i think is allot for a machine showing just the desktop.

can someone tell me how i can confirm that i have a blue ray writer drive without burning something?

    i5 450, 4gb, 5650, blue ray writer, full hd

You can download Speccy. It'll tell you your optical drive.

You can go into device manager and check that the device is called BD-RE - that's what mine says.

A fairly disturbing thing happened today. The hard drive's clicking noise seems to have become somewhat louder than it used to be. Is this a sign it may be failing? I would hate to go through the whole back up and restore thing, not to mention dealing with Sony's support people. I would hate even more to lose my data though..

Any unexpected noises from a hard drive should be taken seriously - get your data backed up on some external media ASAP or risk losing it forever.

Drives are fickle things. They can last 1 month or they can last 10 years. Don't risk it though.

I have done a bit of research and your model is a blu ray writer and normally ships with some E & F series models.

Im new a the forum and just bought that Vaio EB with Mobility Radeon HD 5650.

How I can install newer catalysts for that? Those which sony is providing is poor and if I try to install never catalysts from ati site it only installs manager and not drivers or catalyst center.

    Could someone please help me?

On my laptop, VPCEB17FX, Windows 7 does not always play the "folder open" sound when I double click on the folder. Instead I hear a pop/click in my left side headphone driver. When I click back to back to the previous folder, the same thing sometimes happens. So randomly, sometimes I heard the default sound and sometimes just a pop in my left ear. Does anyone else notice this? Is this a Windows 7 bug? Driver bug? Hardware bug? So annoying..

Maybe it's been too long since I ordered a PC, but I made the order yesterday for an EB, and was told that it would be ready to ship by 11-15. I checked my account online this morning, and the shipping date was revised to 11-24. I called Sony Customer Care and was told that it would take longer because some components were not in stock. They told me that even the 11-24 ship date was not guaranteed (could be later - or earlier). Is this typical - to be told one shipping date and have it pushed out almost ten days later?

Yep. That original date is just an average guess by the website, which has no clue about stock. Your new date is probably much more accurate.

My vpcec was supposed to come two weeks from when I ordered it. But... because I made my order over the phone and said
"I was told by one of your online reps that by calling I could get a discount" they said they couldn't do that but that they would expedite my shipment. Ordered Friday, got it Monday =p

    Hello all,

Unless I get a mad deal on Asus G73, I am buying a Sony EB soon. However, I cannot decide what configuration to choose.

I know this might be a wrong forum to post, but I really want feedback from E series owners.

    Spny EB-Prebuilt $ 885:
    Intel Core i5 460M(2.53GHz)
    15.5" (1366 x 768)
    4GB DDR3
    320GB
    DVD Burner
    Radeon HD 5650

    Sony EB-CTO $ 1080:
    Intel Core i5 460M(2.53GHz)
    15.5" (1920x1080)
    4GB DDR3
    320GB
    BD-Player
    Radeon HD 5650

As you can see the difference is screen resolution and the optical drive, well and price obviously . I really do not watch any BD movies. I use laptop with and without an external monitor approx 50/50. So resolution is somewhat important.
I want to get a BD-Player for only one reason. Later, say 2 years from now, I bet that would make a price difference when I am ready to sell.
Bottom line is price thought, $200 difference. Are screen and BD worth it?

    Thanks in advance!

Screen definitely is, the 1080p is gorgeous.

BD is not. It will not add more to the 2 year second hand price than it costs (thought that would be obvious) so you are wasting money on it.

    Hey guys!
When running my laptop on battery, when winows 7 loads it uses about 15% of my battery. I left the notebook with about 35% battery on and didin't used it for abuot one month. Could this be the problem for it to eat up so much battery when starting? Can i fix this somehow?
    My vaio is EB2S1E.
    Thank you!

    Calibrate laptop Battery

You could try calibrating your laptop battery to fix the problem. You could also disable startup programs and services that may be running your battery low...

make sure you use "power save" by clicking the battery and selecting it from the power options. When unplugged this will really help.

Turn screen brightness down, especially when you aren't at the computer. Your monitor uses up your battery a ton.

    Hi Friends,

I bought my Sony Vaio few days back.

    VPCEB390X - Black
    Intel® Core™ i5-580M processor (2.66GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.33GHz
    4GB (2GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1066
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 GPU (1GB VRAM)
15.5" Full HD VAIO Premium Display (1920x1080)

Unfortunately I broke the display :( . The laptop was lying with screen lid closed and I placed my elbow on it by mistake.
It was just a fraction of second before I realized and pulled my elbow back but there are cracks in the display.
The laptop works normally and I can see the display. The outer glass screen is fine but I can see some cracks in the display inside.

Please advise me from where to repair it and the cost involved.

    Thanks,
    JASS

Can someone tell me how to access the BIOS and change C3/C6 option? I tried pressing F8 on startup and arrived at a menu, but I couldn't find any option of C3/C6 there.

By the way, I have the latest BIOS update already installed.

Though I don't have much of a noise problem, but lately my laptop has been acting crazy, the CPU doesn't run at full speed. When I start the laptop it's fine but as soon as I run any game, it drops instantly to 934~MHz. Yes, it always falls to around this number, and obviously the game runs very slow (GTA IV in this case).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I have the C3/6 option in my bios and I've got the latest one.

If your laptop is clocking that low there's a problem... mine won't go that low on powersave with no programs running.

Hey guys - quick question -

When you power your E-series up from when it's completely shut down - from when pressing the on button does it take around 6 seconds to kick in with noise and the vaio screen??

It's almost like a 6 second delay from when you actually press the on button or even the same if you do quick web access??

Is this right or is it just me?

Thanks for your response - maybe I am js looking at it too closely. I have windows 7 and from the moment I press the on button it takes 1 min 6 seconds to boot into the main windows screen. - any way to improve this?

My original question may have been unclear - Basically when the laptop is off and I press the on button the green 'on' light is on for about 5 seconds before the screen and hdd sound kicks In.

Does everyone feel that's normal or am I being too picky?

    Thanks in advance

You can go to the little start orb and type in "msconfig" and disable some startup programs/ services. That'll speed up your boot times.

    Mine doesn't wait 5 seconds.

After hitting the power button, the VAIO logo appears on screen maybe 1 - 2 secs later for me, the rest of my login only takes about 12 seconds to desktop but thats due to using a SSD.

Been blazing through CoD: Black Ops last night running brilliantly on the 5650, eveything maxed, 4xAA looks great, couple of screens below.

Thanks for your response and I'm glad your enjoing COD!

When I hit my power button everything expect the green power light is blank for 5 seconds and then the vaio screen appears.

Does anyone else on the forum have a similar expereince?

Is it worth reporting it to Sony as I have only had my laptop for 2 weeks.

    Thanks

As I await my order (Vaio VPCEB390X - details listed in my profile), I have a couple of questions (forgive me if these have already been answered):

    1) I understand that the bloatware is impressive (I opted not to go with Fresh Start). Do most folks just reformat and reinstall without the unwanted software? Is there an option to do so (since Sony apparently does not provide install discs)? If so, is the Vaio-specific software worth keeping (I am migrating to the Vaio camp from ThinkPad, and the Lenovo software was stellar).

    2) Asked this before but am hoping I get a bite - I am looking at the SwissGear Maxxum laptop backpack for the EB. Will the EB fit in this bag? Any other suggestions on a case (something more than just a sleeve)?

    Thanks!

I simply downloaded revo uninstaller pro (they have a 30 day trial for their full version) and I went through the sony stuff and uninstalled it. I then went through my services and startup programs and disabled a ton of things there.

No idea about the bag. I don't take this thing out of the house.

I am really confused to why they have that ugly Vaio gate installed by default, even on their netbook line! It lags(!) and is ugly and pointless when there's a Dock-like taskbar introduced in win 7.

    Hi guys,

My laptop has been with me since the first week of August now, and I have had no problems, I even don't have the whining problem most other people have.

But recently I started noticing that sometimes the games run too slow and fps drops considerably. Initially I thought it's something with the GPU but after some tests I came to know it's the CPU.

I have an i3 350M, and it should run at 2.26GHz, but when I am playing any game which requires CPU to run at high speeds, it just falls to 931MHz. The multiplier goes from x17 to x7.

I also noted the temperature of my laptop, and it's running in higher 60s to lower 70s even when idle!

What do you guys think is the problem, and what would you suggest me to do? It's really impossible to do any CPU intensive work, and I'm certainly not comfortable seeing the temperature in 70s, when it used to be in 50s.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    ~Ayu

Sounds like theres a problem with the cpu or cooling solution, if your idling at 70 when you try to play a game the temp is probably going beyond the safety margin and then being throttled down to 900mhz to keep the temp down.

Time to contat sony as I think that will need sent back for repair.

Hi! Does anyone know where to download the latest ATi drivers for this 5650?

You have to bypass the AMD site or something.

And Ayush you need to send that back to Sony.
