Do the current batch of E Series Vaios come with USB 2.0 or USB 3.0?

I know that the EC I just CTO'ed does not have USB 3.0. But I don't think that matters that much. As long as it has eSATA, I won't be using an external hard drive with the USB, just eSATA.

Anyone know if Speedfan can control the fan(s) on these machines? Also, can a program such as CPU-Z or Crystal CPUID control the frequency? With my last laptop, I used CPUID to bring down the clock to a crawl when it was critical for me to stretch how much time I could get out of the battery.

I think it's the battery. It weights a lot less without the battery. Or maybe it's the materials. The EB does feel less flimsily built than other laptops I have seen.

Speedfan will not work on my VPCEC, maybe it will on yours but I don't believe so.

You can't overclock but you CAN go on powersaver mode, which will keep your frequency low. If you really want to you can install a linux distro and those will give you more control over the CPU (you can stay as low as you like)

Aye, that's the problem I wanted to solve. Problem with eSATA is that it's hard to find anything in the way of bus-powered devices (like a standard USB external HD).

Checkout the E Series range on the Sony site and compare the two :).

As far as I know, the EA and EB carry the same Radeon chips (either the HD5470 or HD5650) but the EB offers higher resolutions because of its larger screen.

If your Vaio has an express card slot, you can also buy a USB 3.0 card. I don't see why that wouldn't work!

Good news chum :). I hope mine's alright when it arrives.

Does anyone in the UK know if you can claim the VAT back on a Vaio this Xmas? They've been promoting the VAT back offer a lot on TV and at the cinema and getting it back would pretty much pay for an SSD too :D.

Get the VAT back with Sony : Sony

I go ahead and try the official driver (10.11) from AMD website. Just as expected, it will not update the installed driver. Is there any modification neeed to be done to make it able to install? Thanks.

Just install from the link I posted. The ATI downloader that ATI posts on its front pages has a restriction in it that prevents Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba users from installing. You need to bypass the installer and just install with the raw installer file - which is what I linked to. No mods needed - it's on ATI's own site, just buried away.

And you were expecting an unbiased response from the EB forum :D ? That said - and being that I'm not a gamer - I still wonder why you are looking at the low res screens. I have the HD screen on mine, and have seen the 1366 x 768 screens on the Vaio's in Staples and Best Buy. The HD screen is signifcantly brighter, sharper and more vibrant and detailed. Driving a low res screen with a high performance video card such as the Mobility Radeons doesn't make much sense to me, but I'm no expert and certainly would yield opinion to those with keener knowledge on this.

Does anyone know if there are any clear protective skins for the EB series? I love the finish and color of the new EB, but can see scuff marks and scratches in my future. I am primarily interested in protecting the top of the cover as well as the palm rest - essentially all the glossy sections of the case.

BTW, I tried skinit.com but they do not offer transparent skins.

when you guys say yours is silent do you mean it as to even in a library or completely silent room you dont hear a heavy bit of air running out of there?

Hey JonnyCasino, I updated my Sony Vaio ATI drivers from the Vaio Update, it boosted my performance when I tested Crysis on it.. I could run it on Full settings.. That was freaking awesome.. all Other games are just smooth even on the older drivers..
What do you suggest?? Stick to the Sony Drivers or download the one from ATI..???

Hi, I purchased EA series through sony centre in internet two weeks ago and the week after, there was a problem with an audio analog jack (the thing where you put your headphone jack in).
I can't hear anything from my headphone. I thought there was a problem with my headphone so I tried several of them even I borrowed my friend's headphone, but there seemed to be no problem with headphone itself.
The sound from the laptop itself is completely fine, but I want to listen music through headphone.
So I tried the several methods according to Sony e-support, such as reinstalling the sound driver, which is Realtek and updating the sound driver to the latest version.
I even did the system restore to the original point when I first purchased my laptop, but I still can't hear anything through headphone.
So my hypothesis is either the laptop does not recognize the headphone when I put it in output, or there is simply a problem with the analog jack and must be replaced.
However, the analog jack simply does not break so sudden, does it?
Hopefully there is someone who had a same experience as me.

Its up to you tbh I believe the updated drivers you installed are the 1.4 version and if your finding them great you might be best off sticking with them for now, the big boost came from 1.3 which is why you saw an improvement upgrading as the originally installed drivers would have been version 1.2.

I doubt you would find much / any perfomance improvement from the newest ones, I would just wait for now and see if 10.12 or future drivers offer any largely advertised performance increase again.

Hi..I am from India and I'm planning to buy this Vaio ---> VPCEA36FG : E Series : VAIO Laptop & Computer : Sony India

I'm basically going to use this laptop for work and games (thats why I wanted the ATI 5650). I need linux running on the laptop. Has anyone had any experience with any linux distros (specifically Ubuntu, Fedora) on a Vaio EA series? Has anyone got linux up and running on a EA series with basic functionality (video, audio, ethernet, wireless)? Also how are the screen viewing angles on the Vaio EA series? Overall how would you rate this laptop?

    Thanks

I just had my EB for 2 days, it was working fine until an hour ago. All of the sudden I can't connect to wi-fi and it won't recognize my USB either... What's going on????

At first I thought it was my home wi-fi, but I just tried with my old laptop, and the wi-fi worked just fine OMG

Is the wireless switch under the touchpad off? I talked with Sony about a minor problem shortly after receiving my EB and they were very helpful. Don't be afraid to call them - their support is a perk of new ownership! If you do, report back and let us know what happened.

General Info about clear protective covers

I Spoke with ZAGG about an invisibleshield for the EB (thank you, J&Stinko!) and this is the response...

Thank you for your inquiry in regard to an invisibleSHIELD for your EB series Vaio. At the moment we do not have an invisibleSHIELD design for that device, but we might be interested in creating one! Currently, our design team is working on new invisibleSHIELD designs and they will be readily available once our design team has completed a design for other devices such as the EB series Vaio. Once they are available, they will be posted directly on our website.
    Thank you for choosing ZAGG!

Not sure about the rest of the group, but I'm definitely interested in skinning the clear plastic before venturing this out in the world of hard knocks...

Actually I found and bought a good alternative for an invisibleshield from ebay. It fits perfectly and quality is really good. The only thing I found disappointing is the installation. It does not includes any liquid to balance the sides of the shield, its just one time install and if u mess up its gone. However what I did is mix some soap and water on the shield and now I have the same liquid that ZAGG provides with their shields :).

I think it's wise, but others may differ. Mine came with a rebate on part of the price if I went with one of the extended warranties, but that may have been for the education sales only. Still it's worth asking about.

Anyone else find the video quality lacking?

I have an VPCEB3S1E E-series vaio, I5 etc. and I calibrated my screen, changed a setting to DVD which improved my quality a bit but I still find the video quality lacking...

The weird thing is, I was watching The vanishing point using Apple Quicktime (this is a movie from 1971) and the quality was the best (unbelievably good) I´ve seen so for playing movies on my laptop. Even my DVD´s don´t look that good.

It seems the screen is fine, perhaps there is something wrong with windows media player and/or VLC player?! I have no idea...

When I watched a movie with a friend even he could notice the poor quality, really frustrates me because my lenovo was just fine.

It's all in the software. Some setting is not right.

I personally never use VLC player for the simple fact that it does not use the video card's acceleration (uses CPU instead of GPU).

    Hi, M/Mme Wahlberg -

I looked for prior posts from you to see if I could tell what screen you have, but it looks like this is your first post. I Googled your model number and it seems that it has the 1366 x 768 screen. Hmmm. This might be tough problem to resolve. If you look at this site's review, they took a lot of points off specifically for the below-average image quality from the lower res screen. When I was shopping, I looked at samples of the model from Staples and Best Buy and concurred that the screen lacked some brilliance and sharpness. If it's early in the purchase, maybe you can trade up to a hi res screen. If not, you can use a high res external monitor if the video card is up to it (ie. a Radeon Mobility).

I am having a serious issue after updating the graphic card driver from VAIO update (ATI 5650). It seems that the colors changed and became greyish/washed out . This happens every time I try to lock/login to my pc or wake up from standby. I tried resolving this by clicking on "Reactivate ATI color controls" in CCC, but for the 1st min after loggin in the pc, windows keeps switching back to the grayish/washed out color :S. This is really degrades the quality of the screen, if anyone has a solution please share

So which player do you use then?

Thanks for your answer but there is nothing wrong with the screen nor the pc so it would be a waste to trade it in, too much of a hassle. I kinda wished I ordered it online because I could have had the HD (bigger resolution screen) for free but I´m cool with that.

Well for HD movies I use PowerDVD 10 Blu-Ray edition. But you can also use it to play Quicktime movies and most other mpeg-4 video clips.

I think the Vaio's come with WinDVD HD? I'm not certain if that is any good as I've never used it.

Hey guys I was going to ask, how often does your E's fans cycle?
mine seem to stop and start every 10-20 seconds and power up for a short while.

its not like turbo loud but its loud enough to be heard under ambiant noise.

Mine only speeds up if I start a game, but then its probably only other EE series owners who could comment since the hardware difference between the EE series and EA, EB, EC is rather large.
