AHCI is already enabled in the BIOS. What are the difference in benchmark numbers that you are getting?

    Hey guys,
anyone know what the latest driver for the Radeon HD5650 in the E series is?
I had 10.8 installed, but it gave me borders when I tried to HDMI connect to a TV. I rolled back to the Sony driver, but I'm working with OpenGL and it gave me an error! So I'd like to try the latest driver, and see if both issues have been solved.

    Left Side

My desktop computer, in which AHCI is enable for sure. SSD was system disk of my laptop but at desktop computer not a system disk just a internal harddrive.

    Right Side

My Vaio, AHCI enabled at regedit but not in BIOS. And the results are so different.

By the way, if AHCI were enabled successfully, I should have seen SSD at "Devices" window with the "quick remove the drive" option. This is the main feature of the AHCI. Isn't it?

    What do you think?

I've never seen any of my internal drives listed in the "Safely remove devices" menu, if that is what you mean.

Was the same msahci driver being used in your desktop PC as well when you did the benchmark?

Yes I have tried with msahci and also with the Intel driver. Benchmark results are quite same. It is obvious that without enabling AHCI in BIOS, you cannot obtain top performance.

It is very sad not to be able to enable AHCI at VAIO. Modding BIOS would be an option but I do not have any idea about it.

Safely remove SSD and HDD is only possible when you use windows driver of AHCI. If I load the intel driver, SSD's and HDD's are no longer safely removable drives. I tried it on my desktop obviosly, in VAIO i couldnt make my harddrives as safely remove devices.

FIX: AHCI/SATA drives showing in "Safely Remove Hardware"

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a DeLOCK Card Reader eSATAp > Compact Flash for my Vaio, and it does not show up in Win7Ult. Is there some registry bios tweak to get this working? Windows detects the device, install drivers (maybe?), tells me to reboot and when you insert a CF card, nothing.
Ive tried booting up with the Reader attached and with a card, still nothing.

    Thanks

This is my vaio model number, VPCEC2X5E.

Try deleting the device completely from device manager. run a registry cleaner like ccleaner. reboot. plug device in with CF card. after installation if it dosent work, try booting into advanced options and disable driver signature enforcement. (i forgot the boot key but cut the power to your laptop when the windows logo comes up during booting, boot again, it'll say windows failed to start and then go to advanced options)

I bought VAIO E series VPCEB16FG 2 years ago. I noticed that there are 2 Adobe applications preinstalled in it. One is Adobe Photoshop 8 trial and the other one is Adobe Premier Elements 8 full version. When I try to install this setup file of Adobe Premier Elements 8 full version in another computer then it fails. If something happens to vaio and if I have to format then will I able to reinstall it OR will I loose it.

I also created 4 recovery discs immediately after purchase as said in the user manual. Will the Adobe Premier Elements8 full version is there in one of the recovery discs? Will it show full version if I intall it through recovery disc ? or will it ask for a product key which I can't find anywhere except Windows 7 product key at the back of laptop. It took only 4 DVD's as recovery disc where each has about 4.3 GB of data in it. The C drive at the time of purchase is packed with 250 GB of applications like PMB, Media go etc. 1 DVD occupies 4.7 GB. Then 4 DVD'S occupies 4x4.7GB=18.8GB. Then I have to imagine how many apps I have to loose. This is not fair.

    Got a VPCEC2M1E.
My Processor is an i3-350m and i'm looking foward to upgrade it. Readed about 100's pages; searched for it and no luck...

I know compatible Tech is up to i7-980, still the MAX TDP for this beauty is 35W (correct me if I'm wrong), so I'm whiling to buy an i7-640...still dunno if BIOS will recongize it...comments?

Is there any victim who formatted VAIO E series and then used recovery discs that was already created as I want to know how many apps were restored or lost. I have VAIO E series VPCEB16FG FULL HD 1080. I never had a day of trouble as I use it very rare. If we want to install Windows7 we need Windows7 CD and a key that we can find at the back of laptop. There is full version Adobe Premier Elements 8 already preinstalled by VAIO manufacturer without a trace of key left anywhere. I had a live chat with adobe customer support in their website but they can't help without the key. Now I want to know whether this app is present in the recovery disc.

Hi, Your perfectly correct in your research.

I have an i7-640 in my VPCEC4S0E which is working fine. It's not a bad choice of the available i7's has even though it is only two core has the fastest clock speed.

Hey Guys I am new to this thread,

I have had my VPCEB4C5E for little under a year now and I am in the market for upgrading it.

    Current Specs:

    Windows 7 Professional 64bit

    CPU: Core i5 M480 2.67GHZ
Graphics: 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5650
    Memory: 8 GB DDR3 RAM
Hard drive: 320 GB Serial ATA (7200 rpm)
    Display: 1920x1080 15inch

Was wondering If I were to by an SSD what make/model should i go for that will be compatible with my setup at the minute?

I was also wondering If i was to upgrade to an i7 processor which would be compatible?

What information do I need in order to figure this out? I have CPU-Z but I wasn't sure what to look for to figure out what i7 processor would fit.

1 more thing! when pressing the VAIO button is it meant to mute the laptop on and off? cause i was pretty sure that's what the mute button was for and not the VAIO button......Strange

I would greatly appreciate some help from the people who know thanks. :)

Hi guy. I have treated myself to a new Sony e-series 14" laptop (model number is SVE14A1C5E), I'm just waiting for sony to put it altogether and stick it in the post. I want to run an ssd as my boot drive and then replace the optical drive with a bay holding a standard hard drive. I've done this with my current laptop and it's great. I'm just wondering if there is anything about the 14" e series that requires me to get a certain type of bay for it or would any bog standard one do. For example, the following are available on ebay for €10 delivered. One is 12.7mm, one is 9.5mm. Which one would I need to get? Thanks.

New 12.7mm Optical Bay 2nd SATA HDD Hard Drive Caddy Module Tray Adapter #2 | eBay

Universal 9.5mm Optical Bay 2nd SATA HDD Hard Drive Caddy Module Tray Adapter #2 | eBay

    Hi,

I decided to follow suit and do this. My temps weren't too bad, but I thought it might be a good idea anyway. Used Arctic Silver 5.

Was easy to disassemble. No trouble working out which screws to undo. Heatsink popped off easily.

My putty was caked too, was pretty difficult to remove (got it eventually with the Arcticlean which smelled suspiciously like a very expensive bottle of lemon juice). Noticed they seemed to have applied a huge amount of the stuff - it was spread out all over the heatsink.

After the first attempt, I was idling at like 90*C (fan on full), seems I didn't put enough on to actually make contact between the CPU and the heatsink (I blame Arctic Silver for saying on their instructions how important it was I didn't use too much..). I was using the credit-card spread method as recommended by them. Second attempt, a bit more putty and idling at around 50*C (shoulda looked to see what it was before, but I forgot. So yeah. It's not stealthily quiet or anything, but I am listening out for the fan now, so it's probably about the same as it was before.

Edit: Actually, I'm still not happy. It's idling at more like 60. I'm fairly sure the fan is noisier than before. I'll have to take it apart again tomorrow, clean it properly again and try using a largish dot instead of spreading.

Edit 2: Reapplied. 90 degrees. Reapplied. 60 degrees. Oh dear.

Goodbye everyone here in Sony forums!

My VAIO in sig has sadly died due to accidental water damage and it's being replaced with a Samsung on insurance policy.

Loved my VAIO while it lasted and still love the Sony brand. Also everyone here were always very helpful in answering my q's.

    Cheers all! :)

The last 3 or 4 times I upgraded to the latest ati driver/version of catalyst control center I get broken hardware acceleration in flash/html5 videos and an error at install saying that everything installs successfully except for the hdmi sound driver.

Anyone else have a similar experience or know where to get a proper 12.4 driver?

    Hi guys,

    Got a VAIO E - VPCEB16FG

It wont charge and its not the power cord/brick. Sometimes if you get the cord at the right angle it charges. I need a teardown guide so I can have a look and perhaps fix it up, cant find one!

Hi all, i need a bit of advice please.
I have a VPCEB1Z0E/B with an i5-430M Processor. I use it a lot for apps that use all 4 threads - such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. I can easily max the CPU to 100%. I've already upgraded to sufficient RAM - 6GB however i was wondering what the fastest processor i could install on this motherboard too.

Unfortunately i'm no longer up to scratch with the new motherboards and CPUs and unfortunately the search function isn't working for me so i can't use that either.

Could any of you helpful people please shed some light on this? Just looking to upgrade the CPU, i have seen a few i5-xxx but not sure what i can upgrade to.

Edit: ps, could i even stick an i7 processor in here? And would i need to upgrade anything else related to the CPU too such as cooling?

    Thank You.

    hey,

I just sold my sony vaio F24, i was happy about it but needed money. It was relativily quiet but not silent. Is the Vaio E better ?

    So far im thinking :

    Intel® CoreTM i3-2370M, 2.4GHz
Windows® 7 Édition Familiale Premium authentique
    500 Go Serial ATA (5400 t/min)
    4 Go 1333 MHz DDR3-SDRAM
    Lecteur DVD
    LCD 43,8cm 1920x1080 + webcam
    AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7650M 1Go

would that be enough for multitasking ?

ie: playing poker + watching tvshows in 720p/bluray + firefox + skype + messenger and so on

My vaio F was fine but it had an i5

Oh and what are the main difference between a F and a E ? I cant really understand. The E have a 17inch, the F has 16.4 but apart that i can have the same specs aint i ?

Also, i still have my sata 3 SSD and 4go ram left so i'll add that to the E if i take it

According to the specs the vaio eb supports up to 8gb memory.
Does anyone know if it will take a single stick of 8gb ram? The reason im asking is that i found out that one of the ram slots is broken. so i cannot use 2x 4gb sticks

Hi, I need help from all Sony Vaio E Series users here. I accidently landed up flashing an older bios for my Vaio VPCEB36FG laptop thinking that it was an update. Now the problem is that my system works like before but my cooling fan is continuously at full throttle. Searching sony website for support didnt help reverting back the bios. Requesting users of E series to provide me with the original bios.
    Here is what it was
    Manifacturer: AMI (American something inc.)
    Bios version: R1090Y8
This verision is used in lot of vaio laptops but i searched for it the whole day and couldnt find any link to download it.
    My laptop specs: core i3 370m, 15.4 1080p, Ati 5650, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd.
Current bios: R0300Y8 keeps fan at full speed resulting in massive loss of battery life.

Pls if someone can get me a copy of this bios or latest supported bios (AHCI enabled), I would be really thankful. Here in India technical help turned out to be useless.

AS has a 'curing' time doesn't it? Maybe leave it 2-3 days for each test?

On a different note, I want an SSD in my EA but need the storage space too, how successful are the optical bay adapters when used in the EA series?

I guess I should put the SSD in the notebook, and the HDD in the ODD bay adapter? What BIOS changes/updates would I need, if any?

Has anyone here purchased the 2012 14" E series yet? I just bought one for my girlfriend for college with the following specs.

    14" 1600x900 LED
    i7 3612QM
    8GB DDR3
128GB SSD (to be installed by me)
    AMD 7670M 1GB
    DVD Burner
    White/Aqua Blue chassis

I'm curious as to how good the E series is. I bought it for her because she really liked the color options, and she loves the design of my Vaio S. We're going to attend college together, so I wanted to get her something nice so I wouldn't have to service it much.

You sound like a smart man :) You'll do well at College!

As long as Sony have kept the standards pretty high with the new models I think you'll be fine, it sounds like an awesome spec (bar the screen res but then I don't like anything less than 1080P these days!

Typing on my 2 year old EB keyboard here is still as good as day one!

I'll give you a coupla stuff: Sony may have improved their quality, dunno but the plastic in one corner of my chassis where it gets hot, melted, the LCD screen panel connector is busted and I get artefacts, and my "q" key does not work anymore. I would never recommend the average laptop for college cause theyre tanks to carry around. So unless shes doing Film or Graphic Design, I would say for college/ university turn a blind eye to everything other than an ultrabook. Trust me, Its not pleasant carrying the average laptop around.

Just a quick question, last years (and first quarter of this years) 15" EH-Series with Sandy Bridge, can it be upgraded to Ivy Bridge?

I know it may be possible, Intel confirmed as much, provided the notebook gets a BIOS-Update for that which I fear most laptops won't get.

Don't expect that much from Sony support.

PD: Is normal to see the Turbo Boost switching almost constantly??
I mean, i just right-click or even move the mouse and the multiplier changes back and foward.
I fear to burn something with so much switching.

It's normal as far as I know. Even speedstep and other power saving functions switch the clock of the CPU many times per second.

    Hey all,

I'm getting some seriously high temps with my 14 month old EB series. Got an i5 480M and a HD5650. Running some heavy data processing or when gaming the core temps on the CPU and GPU are in the high 90's celsius. The highest I've experienced is 100c for the CPU, and 99c for the GPU. Has anyone else experienced this?

It's hard to tell, but I think the problem has been getting steadily worse. The laptop is being used on a hard surface with decent ventilation etc. Room temps are in the low 20s.

I'm gonna have a look inside and see if I can remove any dust or check the thermal paste, but these temps can't be normal?

Hello everyone. I've browsed through some of this thread and there's been some useful information imparted so thanks for that!

    I have a question.

I've recently ordered the following specification from the Sony store:

    SVE1711C5E
    Intel® CoreTM i5-2450M, 2.5GHz
    Windows® 7 Home Premium
500 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm)
    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3-SDRAM
    Blu-ray Disc(TM) player
    43.8cm LCD 1920x1080 + webcam
    AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7650M 2GB

to be built in the new 2012 E series 17" model....

    It came to around £640.

My question is with regards to the F series of laptop and how it compares.

For example, M&S has the following on offer:

    VPCF23N1E

    Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    640GB Hard Drive
    4GB Ram
    Blu-ray Disc(TM) player
    16.4" 1600 x 900 screen
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M GPU

    For a similar price (£650).

Is there anyone that can shed more light as to the differences in build quality between the newer E series, and such an F series model.

From what I gather, the main differences are in the touchpad, the materials used, and the processor - though both are the older sandy bridge.

    Any information is greatly appreciated!

    Edit:

I have the option to upgrade the 'E series' configuration to the 3612qm i7 ivy bridge chip but that'd add roughly £110 to the cost. Would that be recommended or would it be worth my while to hold out for a slight drop in SSD prices and look for a 256GB SSD for that cost in the near future (to go with the i5 chip).

To further complicate things, i've just spotted a clearance SE series priced at £799:

    VAIO SE1 Series with Intel® CoreTM i7-2640M.

    Intel® CoreTM i7-2640M, 2.8GHz
500 GB Serial ATA (7200 rpm)
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3-SDRAM
    39.5 cm LCD, 1920x1080+webcam
    AMD Radeon(TM) HD 6470M 512MB
    DVD disc drive

I lose the blu-ray with this, and the graphics card is different, but I think the screen quality is meant to be MUCH better on the SE Series - is that correct?

As you can see, i'm at quite a dilemna here. Any opinions are warmly welcomed!

In case anyone is in a familiar position -

I found a bit of dust in the fan, but I think the main problem was with the thermal paste. The stuff Sony had put there was almost solid and the cpu and gpu were completely stuck to the heatsinks. I replaced the Sony paste with some Arctic MX-something something and the temps are now idling around 40c.

    Hi everyone,

I was searching on web for EB series heatsink upgrade. I mean that i want a better cooling performance for my eb series notebook (it still a little bit loud for me).
Can anyone give me some advice what kind of heatsink or/and cooling fan or/and paste should i buy?
