So...I'm the happy new owner of a Vaio E Series computer =) I love this thing! I'm coming off of using an old Dell Inspiron 1210 oversized netbook thingy with a tiny HDD and even tinier RAM so this is quite the upgrade! I got the E14 with 750 GB HD, 8 GB ram, touchscreen, Gunmetal and "Vintage Gold" (more like a bronze color)

So far, everything is great hardware-wise except for one thing. The keyboard is the Canadian bilingual one so the left shift key is a bit small for my tastes (or is it like that on all of them?)

I've heard others complain about the touchpad, but absolutely no hardware complaints regarding that so far, it points and clicks just fine. Software setup wise I didn't like the default on the touchpad so much - silly windows 8 corner clicks and slides, but I've disabled that stuff as I only want the touchpad to do 2 things - point and click. everything else I keep doing accidentally so I'm not a big fan of all the fancy stuff, I guess scrolling with it is ok. But I'd rather use the touchscreen. Thus far, I actually like Windows 8 (coming off of XP, never really used anything in between that much) but I don't think it'd be so hot without the touchscreen. Sound on the laptop is surprisingly good, picture is nice, and compared to what I'm used to this thing is FAST! I realize there are other computers out there that are faster, better for running games etc etc but this will suit my needs quite nicely. I've been a fan of Sony products for quite some time, they generally make some very good stuff, and always wanted a Vaio so I'm happy to have fulfilled that desire, and it certainly has been great so far! I was going to hold out for one off their website with all the bells and whistles - dedicated GPU, Blu-Ray, 1600x900 display and in the Silver/Sapphire color but I broke down and got this one on sale and I'm very pleased with it.

I recently bought a customized notebook from the Sony UK website, model SVE1512C5E with the following specs:

    Core i5 3210m

    ATi 7650m

    6gb ram

    500gb HDD

Now the problem is that the fan is very loud, as in it just spins at a constant speed and doesn't decrease or increase speed, thus even if the system is not under any load, the fan keeps on going at a very high speed.

Now I noticed that the temperature of the vga is constantly at 128C - this temperature was disaplyed in both Afterburner as well as speedfan. I have the latest ATi drivers, tried uninstalling and reinstalling them to no avail. Bios is also the latest.

Is this normal? Or do I have to RMA ?

    Thanks

I bought a new Vaio E14P but after the registration process the LCD is blank. The cursor is moving but nothing is coming up. The box did not come with any Windows 8 installation CDs. What does this mean?

    Hello

I bought a VPCEC2M1E model laptop about 2.5 years back now, and while cleaning the inside I noticed there is room in the hard drive bay for a 2nd drive. Now I'd like to add an SSD drive (INTEL 520 120 GB preferably) to the setup so I can install windows and my programs to the SSD, while keeping all my data files on my HDD.

This model doesn't seem to be sold in many countries and I've failed to find an english site with the specifications.. Although there's the dutch one (you can probably make out relevant information anyhow) VPCEC2M1E

I've looked around the internet and saw that it's possible and even easy to replace your HDD with an SSD on laptops, the thing is I don't want to replace, I want to add a 2nd. Does anyone know if my laptop has the power and the extra SATA connection for this? Or if someone can give me pointers I could screw it open and check if I have what is required for this operation.
If you need any more information, feel free to ask!

    Thanks in advance

EDIT: I took my time and browsed around this forum and it seems this issue has surfaced before. I bought the 500gb option so my laptop didn't come with the double connector... Considering I could get my hands on one of these "M980 SATA HDD FPC", would it not be a very expensive solution? Is it a lot cheaper to replace my Optical CD/DVD drive with a case and insert my HDD in there (and use my regular connection for my new SSD)?
Although money is in a tight spot for me, I don't mind putting some effort into it and losing my CD/DVD drive since I barely use it...
Again, thanks for any help in advance!

I have a Vaio E series i3 1156 socket that came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Ive made terrible mistake of re-installing the OS without doing a backup of the original version. I went to the Sony UK website support and downloaded all the needed drivers for Windows 7 but i can not find the driver for the FN shortcut Keys. And now the fan runs extremely loud even when i open one tab in Firefox for my email. The fan was not running that loud before i changed the OS. Is it possible that the laptop came preinstalled with some kind of driver that controls the cpu fan speed ? It is extremly annoying sometimes the fan goes at maximum speed without even touching the laptop.

The left click button on my Sister's VPCEB15FM/T is not responding well unless you tap it hard. I'm thinking there's dirt or dust under the button that just need to be clean up. How do I go about removing the button or the palm rest assemble to clean underneath?

    Thanks for the help,

    Hi,

I finally bought a SONY VAIO E Series SVE1712BCXB 17" Notebook Intel Core i5 3210M, and found this thread.
I guess as a new owner of E series, I would joining you guys from now on..

I'm wondering if anyone have the same model as I do, and would like to know what kind of bag are you guys using for this particular laptop.
I'm looking for one that not too bulky (as the 17.3" laptop itself have been pretty big already), and a little bit tight is OK for me...
If anyone could point out the laptop bag that they are using, and links would be a plus...

    thanks in advance...

Hello folks. Sorry to ask a question that may have been asked already. I own an EB series laptop with 15 inch screen, ATI Grpahics and Intel I3 CPU from 3 years ago. I am running out of disk space on the 500GB hard drive. Actually, if I repartitioned it, I might be able to do just fine. However, if repartition and reinstall the OSes, I might as well go with a bigger hard drive. So I think of buying a 1GB hard drive.

My question is now, what's the best way to reinstall the OS? Should I use the VAIO restore thing or should I use a fresh Windows 7 install?

When I got the laptop, I created the restoration DVDs. Would these CDs be enough to restore the laptop to the factory settings once I install a new hard drive? Or should I do a clean Windows 7 install? I own a Windows 7 DVD. I wonder, is there a way to do a clean install? Where do I get the Windows 7 key for this laptop? Thanks.

    Hello folks

My Vaio F12S is dying and I need a 1080p replacement. I will probably order SVE17 from .de or .uk
Did anyone replace their SVE keyboard ? With other color or replaced for a backlight keyboard. Does the keyboard from SVE15 fits into the SVE17 ?

Hmm, seems like all the original thread posters like me have long since gone now that we have tweaked and sorted out any problems with this laptop series, hence the lack of replies.

Ok, this one is easy todo. Get a hold of MiniTool® Partition Wizard Bootable CD 7.8, it's free as far as I remember.

Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

Word of warning firstly, make a full clone back up using such software as Acronis True Image or similar first, as shrinking System partition, in other words the C boot drive, can very rarely go wrong. It is very rare, but back up just in case. I had no problems previously shrinking my system partition in order to create a second partition.

In order to shrink the system 'C' partition, you need to burn a bootable disk version of MiniTool® Partition Wizard Bootable, found on their web page, then boot into it, ( make sure in your BIOS, ( Hold F2 at Boot ), make sure that you have Boot order set to boot first from the optical drive.

Then shrink your system partition using the bootable MiniTool® Partition Wizard. I vaguely remember that I had to do it this way, as I believe you cannot shrink a active system partition, i.e. one that is booted into windows.

Once shrunk, you can then add a second, third, or even forth / fifth partition, as long as you leave enough space for each one.
Is best to move any large video files onto a external drive first as these will slow down the process.
Job done, should take upto a hour and half, most likely less depending on how much data is on the drive.

Does anyone know if my laptop has the power and the extra SATA connection for this?
Yes it does. I done this a at least a year ago. The motherboard / HM55 chipset actually has four SATA ports, one for optical, one for ESata, the other two for Hdd's.

The part in question the M980 SATA HDD FPC, after much searching and trying to buy this part, I walked into my local specialist laptop shop, and they said they could order it for me way cheaper than what I would have paid online, I got it got £65. Online it was £100+.

Opening up the drive bay, and placing in the new connector is fiddly if you have large hands like me but easily done.
The second drive, the SSD, screw it to the bracket, connect the connector ribbon cable, it has a small white bracket that lifts up and down which clamps the ribbon cable. Then put fixing screws back in, cover back on.

Then is a case of either cloning your present drive, (which you need to do first) or the far easier & batter option as I found is to do a semi clean install to remove all the bloatware, using recovery disks you should have made when laptop was new. Or just a regular install using the recovery disks.

For Semi clean install advice, see below, It is great as removes all Sony vaio Bloatware, most of which I never used and was useless, for example, on first setting up the laptop, is was kinda slow, I looked at running processes in task manager, over 78+ of them all hogging system resources.

After semi-clean install on the SSD, I was able to reduced this to about 54-56, and even now two years later, it is still very fast.
Boot time is still under 30 seconds, was less than 25 seconds on first installing the SSD and resource intensive software such as PS 5.1 will load in less than 3-4 seconds.

For Windows 7 ( may well work for Windows 8 )

Or just install Windows 8 from a install disk, you can get one from digital river or a trial version maybe from MS, and then download all drivers and software from sony's support portal.

    Pretty normal much yes.
Not sure about VGA at 128C, that sounds way off, a CPU will shut down around 100 to 105C, or GPU for that matter. VGA??

Launch Vaio Control Centre> Power Management> Power Options > Thermal Control Strategy >
Make sure is ticked on Balanced mode if you want quieter fan. And choose Balanced Power Plan rather than high performance.

Personally in Vaio Control Centre, I have it on Performance mode for priority heat discharge and in windows power options on High Performance too,
so that everything is super fast. Noisy fan yes though.

Also see here for another major solution, C3/C6 support in the BIOS solves the problem.

i recently scored a Sony Vaio SVE1512T1E with a broken screen, and i was wondering if anyone has tried to change the stock 1366x768 screen of the sve15 model to a 1920x1080 full hd one ?

The stock screen is a AUO B156XW04 with a 40pin connector.

After some research i found this AUO B156HW03 screen@
    NEW COMPATIBLE SCREEN FOR DELL B156HW03 V.0 V0 15.6
which seems to have the same connector and same mounting holes in the frame but a higher resolution@1920x1080.

So has anyone tried this operation? its only a ~30£ price difference for a full hd screen and i might go for that if it works in my system :) i heard of some incompabilitys such as single/dual channel lvds but there seems to be a large inconsistency between computer models if they can take the upgrade or not.

    QUESTION ABOUT OVERCLOCKING

I got a 3-year old VPCEB17FX with i3-330M CPU and ATI Radeon HD5470 graphics. I have heard reports that both can be overclocked. Has anyone already played with overclocked VPCEB to see at what speeds the hardware remains stable?

Oh and by the way, what is the latest and greatest version of AMD Catalyst drivers that you can have on this laptop? I have the standard 10.3 or so version, provided from Sony's web site, but that's many years old now. I tried downloading the 12 and 13-series drivers by a direct link but both of them messed up something in my system (not graphics, but DLL related) so I reverted to the previous state.

Regarding the Catalyst drivers, it seems like the latest non-beta versions are 13.4 and 13.9. As I mentioned, I have had some bad luck with the 13.9. Other people also mentioned issues with the bugs in the mobility version. So I decided to try the 13.4. The file that you want is 13-4_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe.

Unfortunately, amd/ati does not provide a direct link and they no longer allow people to download the drivers from their site even with direct link. You can easily thwart that by installing a web browser extension that fakes the referrer part of http request or you can simply google the name and you can find some 3rd party sites hosting the file. If you download the file from sites other than amd, it is nice to have a fresh real-time anti-virus protection program running because who knows what could be in that file.

The installation still complained about some errors, though they were not catalyst or driver related (the suite includes a lot of utilities, some obviously of not the highest packaging quality). In the end, the 13.4 driver worked fine for me and I intend to keep it. I do recommend everyone who attempts to install a newer Catalyst suite to manually create a Windows 7 restore point so that you could always revert to the previous state if driver installation doesn't work. This has saved me headache a few times.

As for overclocking, the MSI Afterburner does not allow the overclocking of this chip, so I tried the latest version of AMD GPU clock tool. It works, but unfortunately once you set clocks with it, the underclocking feature stops working, so your GPU and memory clocks are running at full speed even at idle, which I imagine can't be good for the battery life and system longevity. In the end, I think I will probably not overclock the chip. The game that I play is Urban Terror, which is Quake 3-based. It runs fine on med to high settings at 1280x720. It also runs fine in full HD as long as there are like 10 or less players, but starts slowing down on huge multilayer servers. I personally can't even tell almost any difference between 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Both look about the same. This is not the prettiest of first person shooters.

Apparently, MSI Afterburner does work well for overclocking GPU in our laptops. The issue is that by default the overclocking is disabled. I followed this guide and was able to unlock the overclocking settings:

How To: Overclock Your AMD / ATi GPU

Well, how did it go? I haven't played a lot yet, specially with the benchmarks, but there is some progress. The stock GPU Memory speed is 750MHz. I pushed it up to 950MHz until the GPUTool started reporting errors. Then backed down to 925MHz. No errors so far. The GPU Clock speed is 790MHz, and I tried it at 850MHz. No errors so far. I played a game and recorded a demo for benchmarks. As I was doing this, the GPU temperature didn't seem to go above 60C, which is the temperature I used to get under normal conditions. So the whole thing looks pretty promising so far.

I want to report a CPU upgrade success. My VPCEB17FX model came with i3-330m CPU originally. I am pretty happy with the CPU performance, though I play a few games that are oddly more CPU-bound than GPU-bound, even on this laptop. When I was cleaning the laptop I saw that the CPU is socketed, so it's possible to change it physically. I decided to shop for a replacement, looking for a Westmere-generation i5 or a faster i3 (like i3-390M). I found a deal on i5-480M for only $33 online. After receiving the CPU, I opened the case, cleaned the dust, installed the CPU, cleaned the heatsinks with fine sandpaper, alcohol, and q-tips, applied a small dot of thermal compound on both dies on the CPU module as well as to the ATI graphics chip. And the thing worked. I am quite happy. The temperatures stay where they used to be with the i3, about 40-45 at idle or light load, 60-65C under hard load or games. I saw in improvement from 90fps to 105fps on my game.

    Hi to all,

I have 2 questions, and because my laptop is an EF model, I quess this is the best Thread where I can post them.

    1) I'm searching for a service / repair manual for my Vaio VPC EF4E1E, does anyone has it or knows where to download?

    2) The laptop doesn't boot.
When I press the start button, the three LED's in the right upper corner and the led of the battery lights shortly up,
The harddisk is also revving up, but the cpu fan not (I have opened the back cover)
When I keep the start button pressed, the harddisk shuts down.
    Does anybody has a clue?

    Thanks from a Dutch guy.

    Hi,
    I own a Sony Vaio VPCEB4X8E laptop.
I've tried to install some of the available vaio applications from my model from this link: Sony : Actualizaciones de VPCEB4X8E/BQ | Descargar actualizaciones para VPCEB4X8E BQ | VPCEB4X8EBQ
However, when I click any of the download links, nothing is shown up. No download pop-up. Pop-ups are alowed, and I've tried it with both Chrome and Mozilla. It simply forwards to the same page (although, web address has changed to something like: Sony : Actualizaciones de VPCEB4X8E/BQ | Descargar actualizaciones para VPCEB4X8E BQ | VPCEB4X8EBQ )

What can I do to download them?
    Thanks

hi nitemare224. this is more of a Realtek driver configuration problem between the realtek audio hardware & sony laptops, like with my brother's Sony VAIO VPCEB44FX laptop with preinstalled Win7 64bit edition. no matter what version of the Realtek HD Audio driver (even the original driver for that laptop which was version 6.0.1.6098) I used, including one of the recent versions like 6.0.1.7177 from this Sony site, or even v6.0.1.7195 [google search for that specific version], the Realtek HD Audio Manager control panel app does not work.

Even some Win8 users using Realtek HD Audio on certain sony laptops aren't able to get access to the Realtek HD Audio manager program mentioned here.

So the problem is not limited to just certain versions of Windows. The problem seemed to only happen on many Sony laptop models, regardless of what Windows version was installed on those Sony laptops. If you install these Realtek HD Audio drivers on other brand name computers like ASUS, Acer, Dell, HP, Toshiba that have Realtek audio hardware, the Realtek HD Audio manager control panel program is available on those computers.

Found the old thread in the Sony Community site that mentioned about the Realtek HD Audio manager problem.

Anyway, it doesn't seem to be a big deal to me since the recent Realtek audio drivers work fine on the Sony Vaio VPCEB44FX notebook computer except for that audio manager control panel program but the Dolby Home Theater V3 audio tab shows up on the Speakers Properties dialog box (hee-hee!). Just have to live with this minor annoyance.

Realtek has recently released R2.74 of their high definition audio package (version 6.0.1.7240) on their web site (5/14/2014).
However, during driver installation of the Realtek HD Audio driver R2.74, it crashed with a blue screen of death message (Stop error 7E) on the Vaio VPCEB44FX laptop using the following hardware ID:
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0269&SUBSYS_104D4600&REV_1000
After rebooting from the crash, the audio was lost and I had to uninstall the faulty Realtek audio driver and revert to using an older version.

The previous release (R2.73) of the official Realtek HD Audio driver (6.0.1.7083) worked okay under the VPCEB44FX notebook computer and did not crash the system.

So for those using Sony laptop EA/EB/EC series laptops with Realtek HD Audio, avoid using the official Realtek HD Audio 7240 driver from the Realtek web site until they fix the crashing problems.

Any E series-knowledgable out there willing to reply? Need feedback please on my Vaio Fit 15E (SVT 15328CXW) with i7-4500U, 1TB storage. So far, I really love it's speed, the RapidWake feature, and feel/spacing of the keyboard that is back-lit. Am having the following issues:
    1) after inactivity, keep getting kicked off of wi-fi. This was also happening on my HP Split 13x2 hybrid laptop/detachable tablet. Both laptops are Windows 8.1. HP successfully fixed my Split, but Sony failed to do so after two resets to earlier times, and checking the system remotely for over an hour. Do NOT have this wifi problem on my Android Nexus 7 LTE (in wifi mode, of course), nor on my iPhone, or my little 10" Gateway LT2802u, so my cable co. says is probably a Windows 8.1 problem.
    2) Second issue: touchscreen occasionally becomes unresponsive and cannot open charms to shut down properly.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Glad I found this site!

I figured this would be as good a place as any to post it, I have had a Sony Vaio (sve1712bcxb) for about a year and a half now, and recently noticed that two of the case screws have rattled loose. They are the corner case screws that hold where the screen hinges, so it's getting a bit precarious with opening and closing the screen. Anyone have any idea what the screw size is for those two? I thought someone might be able to help here! Thank you! Untitled-1.jpg

Looks like my 4 year old Sony VAIO E series graphic card is failing. Vertical lines and artifacts are filling up the display and the lappy shuts down after 15 mins. Any suggestion on what to do since Sony has discontinued the VAIO?

    DearAll,
I am new to this forum and not that expert in hardware.

I am doing someone a favour and trying to fix his laptop - Sony Vaio E series - VPCEA33EN. This has a backlight issue. Now before I go ahead buy another screen, I found this very useful forum and learned that a fuse might be the culprit.

So, I have opened up the laptop and got the MOBO out. Please can some one tell me which ine is the fuse and what should I do next.

    Thanks to all.

Anyone here get the control center working in windows 10? I would like my batterycare function 80-50% and the fan option working.

Well, after much trial and error I found SOAVCC-80271939-0082 works in win10 for vaio control center.
SmartWi-Connection-Utility-4-9-4-20091005-2246 works too. But the brightness, function keys work, but very slow and no on screen display.
If you guys find any other files that helps get windows 10 working better on our VPC-E, please post!

Another happy EB-series user is reporting. After almost 7 years of use, my Sony VPCEB17FX is still running strong. The 1080p screen remains beautiful and it is actually better than 1080p screens on some 2017 models. I have upgraded the HDD, RAM, and CPU (to i5 480M), but kept the Windows 7 having observed the fsckup that "free" Windows 10 was. Even after having bought a replacement laptop, I can't get rid of this VAIO.

Has anyone been able to successfully run any fan control software on their VPC-E notebooks? I'm trying to develop a config for Notebook FanControl but am struggling to get it to work - I think the EC may need to be put into manual mode but haven't found a way to do it so far.

Has anyone upgraded their laptop wifi/bluetooth card yet? I upgraded mine to the Intel 7260 (7260.HMWG.R). The wifi works well, but the 7260's bluetooth doesn't show up in Device Manager. Only the Broadcom bluetooth works. I tried taping pin # 20, pin # 51, uninstalling existing drivers, turning off Bluetooth on Vaio Smart Connect, and even physically removing the original T77H114-BCM2070 bluetooth module but none of these worked. Has anyone been able to get their laptop to recognize 7260's bluetooth?
