The NS Series has been out for a little while now and it replaces the aged NR series. My friend has the NR series and the exterior of the NS looks very similar to the NR with the exception of a built-in Motion Eye camera as standard on the new NS series.

The awesome thing I noticed about this laptop is that it gives you the illusion that it's much thinner than it actually is. I mean it's not big and bulky in any way, but the design (including the receded bottom) makes it look like the laptop is floating on an air cushion

Overall, great laptop for a low price.

Anyone buy this laptop or is planning on buying it?

I bought a NS150FJ, I wanted something cheap and powerful but not too much, I wanted to get rid of games and be more serious cause of the university. After all I got my desktop for gaming.

This machine is great so far, I haven't seen any complains whatsoever in the web, that makes me feel that I made the right choice getting this laptop. :)

The only problem, yet I dont know if is normal for a laptop, is that the battery drains too fast, left the batter full charged and one and half day later 19% of the charge was gone. Did the test again waiting for around 5 days and 47% was gone. Took the batter off for one and half day, which was full charged, and then put it again and it lost 1%. Maybe my laptop is not turning off properly. :(

Pakitos. make sure if you leave your laptop for some time that it goes into hibernation . if you leave it in sleep it will continue using some power since it keeps the rams active to retain info for when you resume.

hibernation is like if its in shut off mode , but is faster when you turn it back on because it makes an image of your hard drive of when you left. So it resumes faster.

    check it out.

Yea, make sure you're not pressing the power button in the start menu (the one on the left of the lock button) to turn off your computer because that only puts it to sleep, which still leaves a part of your computer on (the ram especially). Make sure you press that arrow and choose "shut down" or "hibernate" to make your laptop use zero power.

It is normal for batteries to lose charge over time. The rate at which it loses charge increase with the storage temperature. That's also why some people recommend storing unused batteries in the refrigerator (NOT THE FREEZER). The battery also loses charge faster if it is fully charged compared to, say, 50%.

    PS: Welcome to NBR!

New NS series laptops have T6400 CPU, but I cant find any info about this CPU on intel.com page.

Do you guys know its specifications and what is the difference compare to the old T5xxx CPUs?

I think the difference is that the T6xxx is a Centrino 2 while the T5xxx are Centrino.

Has any of you downgraded the lap to xp? Im thinking of doing it, but I just dont want to mess with the recovery partition.

If you downgrade you dont need to delete/remove recovery partition. It can stay there.

After shopping for months for a new laptop, I think I made a good decision purchasing the NS. I like mostly everything about it! But what do you, NS owners, think about the fan? It's on the quiet side but in a silent room I could definitely hear it; it sounds like the wind blowing or something. I'm very sensitive to noise and the fan's been bothering me a bit. Am I being too picky? Do you all hear this noise and if so are you bothered by it?

Also, when I open up a new file or when the computer's working hard, I hear a crackling noise. Do you all experience this and is this normal? I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks!!!

    Hi Summerjeanz,

I am exactly in the same situation. I'm happy with my new NS laptop, it works great and I really like the look and feel. Although I wish the harddisk was a little bit more quiet, I can live with the rustle of it. The left fan isn't very noisy, but to noisy for me (especially when the environment is silent). The fan runs irregular and I don't know why it starts (it runs also when my laptop is idle)... I can't find a connection to the temperature, because the temperature is mostly low and the air out of the fan feels relatively cool. Very frustrating! I've been looking for some fan control, but it isn't in the Bios or Control Panel...

I can't seem to find the fan control either. But the fan noise is tolerable and I've been playing music on the laptop which helps mask the fan noise. I don't need to turn up the music too loud to mask the noise since it's not too noisy to begin with. The crackling noise also doesn't come on too much, so it's alright.

I actually might sell (with a discount, of course) this laptop to my friend who really likes the look and feel of it and doesn't mind the noise, and get the FW laptop. But all in all, I think the NS is a great lappy with just a few minor flaws.

After rebooted or resumed, the default color setting overrides my customized color setting. This color setting issue is found on other Sony models and there are driver updates to fix it. However, there is no update available for the NS series yet. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Just bought the NS240 about three weeks ago. holy smokes this thing is quick! a LOT of computer for the money. i play battlefield 2, run a lot of office apps, browse a lot, and do virtual work on this machine and i could not be happier. this is a GREAT machine, and id definitely recommend it to anyone looking at it. when i bought it at best buy, two other guys did at the same time too. guess this is fast becoming a popular model, and i understand why. completely!

Mr. Eversman, wouldn't the default color setting override the customized setting?

    Andrew,

I honestly cant say. i havent seen that issue. I themed vista with a custom theme, and i use a desktop manager that has a cube similar to linux beryl cube. Now, the theme i chose came with its own color settings that are slightly modified by my cube.

I never really had the original settings long enough for that problem to emerge if it was there. i do not know the answer, but i will do some research and see what i can find out. if i hear anything i will shoot you a pm.

I have a Sony Vaio NS 140E, with vista home premium. Recently MS issued a large number of updates for vista. Ever since that time, my dvd/cd rom drive won't read/play audio cds, and dvds are read in so slow a manner as to make watching the video nearly impossible. Has anyone advice on appropriate steps to improve such a situation?

    Thanks!

I haven't noticed any slow down. However, I do remember Sony released a firmware update for the optical drive for my NS150D a while back. Maybe you should look into that and see if it helps?
