Sorry if this is the wrong place, but does anyone know how to remove windows' software from your vaio SR? like:
    -window media center
-window media player, calendar, dvd maker...and the list goes on.
I tried to uninstall it but it would not work.
Deleting the folder would not get rid of the files either. Any help? All these software are useless to me and a waste of space. Thanks for any help.

Well, Duke. I run Comodo, Avira and the Synaptics touch pad thing. I don't run spybot (only thing I have for now is MBAM). I don't have any kinds of problems at all, at least from what I've noticed.

    It might be spybot. @_@

Actually I think I spoke too soon, lol -- this morning, I put the laptop in hibernate and the power button stayed green, when I tried pressing keys it rebooted and I got the error message. Very odd. I wonder if maybe it happens if you go into sleep or hibernate when Avira is actively scanning something?

Is the SR at 4.2 lb heavy? I think I am going to get it instead of the Dell E4300. Decisions.

For some perspective, it is almost a pound lighter than a macbook(.8lb to be exact), about .2 lbs lighter than a XPS M1330, .2 lb heavier than the ideapad u330, and has an identical weight to the new HP dv3500./

So in other words, the weight of the SR seems to be (aside from the 15 inch weight of the 13.3 inch macbook) around the industry average for mainstream thin and light 13.3 inch computers...

to all SR user, im thinking to get the one with ATI gpu.
may i know whats the battery life duration and the setting use (to get more hours on battery) for the notebook with that gpu?

and also wanna ask about the SR build. is the build quality is decent? sturdy build ? hows the hinge part? does it flimsy? sorry so many question ask; since i see some of you already have the paint(color) peel off(?) on this notebook..

im not in hassle getting the notebook since my current notebook still working fine, just the battery life reduce to (1 and 45 mins with lvl 6 brightness, wifi on and cd/dvd rom on, browsing(firefox) and mint programming task(oracle jdeveloper) after almost 2 years of use

i'll get the new one maybe in early next year or so, lol.

ps: someone with sr, do the **** review for nbr please (joking :p )

If your waiting until 2009, i would say that the SR will be a different computer by then. Perhaps there will be higher CPU clock rates available, perhaps a ati 4000 series radeon, etc. Eitherway, i love the SR, it gets 3 hours + with the ati GPU, built quality is excellent(but not as solid as a ugly old thinkpad...of course)

Very unlikely... the Z will take a big hit if Sony starts offering hi-color (or dura-view) screen for the SR..
they want you to buy the Z if you want better screen

I just chatted with a Sony sales associate. I was told that the Z and SR series have the same screen quality and are both LED. The only difference is the resolution (SR-1280x800 and Z- 1366x768 or 1600x900). Can anyone confirm this?

No, I believe the Z has a better quality screen (the Xbrite-Duraview of the Z vs. the Xbrite-Eco of the SR). A lot of people who've seen the Z and SR side by side, mention that they see a definite improvement in the Z. For more info, check this thread.

im really looking forward to see if there will be an upgrade version of ati gpu.

it still ati hd 3470 gpu. i was saying for the type upgrade instead of just upgrade on memory allocation..say..any luck for little sr to have ati hd 3650 or any ati hd 3600 series? or maybe not since ati hd 3650 is cater for medium size notebook :z

    still, good enough.
and one thing, does the sr support ddr3 sdram?

I need a couple of power adapters for the SR. I just ordered an SR for my boss and he needs 3 adapters total. I don't know the stock part number yet and the only adapter that was coming up on the sony website was the stick power adapater that's ultra portable and $100. I'd prefer to find something a bit cheaper. Any ideas?

I think the poster was looking for additional ac adapters to the one provided by Sony. I would recommend trying to look for some reputable brand universal ac adapters with the same specs are the SR's default adapter.

I can't find the any scaling options when I have the SR hooked up to an external monitor. Where is it usually at in the ATI control panel? I've exhausted the whole thing several times.

hey guys, i'm new here and am a proud new owner of the SR19.

    Platinum Silver
    Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium 32-bit
    1 GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 1GBx1)

one thing i want to do immediately is upgrade my ram from 1 gb to 4. the problem is, looking at ram online, i see that there are two different types of pc6400/ddr2 800 ram's; there is a 240 pin configuration and a 200 pin configuration. i was wondering if any of you guys know which one is on ours? thanks in advanced and i look forward to utilizing that "how to install ram" post in the first post of this thread.

Pretty sure the 240-pin is for desktops (it's bigger). You need notebook RAM (the 200-pin) to install in your SR. Sites like Newegg will usually separate them into these two categories.

I was also wondering, should I do the install before I turn it on for the first time, or after? Or does it not make a difference when I do it?

Does anyone know what the various model numbers stand for on the SR190?
e.g. SR190 NAB, NBB, PAB, etc..

Also, do the preconfigured models come in various colors, or are they all black?

    Thanks.

with the intel graphic card and minimal program running, I can only get around 3 hours. With wifi, it's lower. That's going by the time vista gives me. (as I type, it's 2hr 19min with wifi @ 90%)

An additional question if anyone can help me:
Does your battery not charge to 100%? I can leave my adapter in for the longest time (with the computer shut off, the light would eventually go off) but when I turn it back on, the bar says about only 90-95%. Is this common, vista misreading the power, or is it because I have a faulty battery?

Duke, the $300 coupon code doesn't seem to be working with the SR290 CTO. I was trying to price a 290 w/ Blu-Ray and HDMI vs my 190 and it gave me this error code:

"The following coupons are not applicable for this order:VAIO300SR"

It's a known issue that vista is giving incorrect estimates of battery life. You have to actually let the battery percentage drop down to get a real read of what the time remaining is. As it stands, vista usually underreports the time you have left.

This may be a battery drain issue, that has apparently plagued Vaios since the SZ and is still an issue with the SR and the Z. Some people get this, some people don't, and the severity of the battery drain is pretty uneven across different owners. There's been no real resolution on this yet.

    Thank you Lattice.

And another question if anyone could answer. Does the ATI graphic card improve video quality? I know the main thing the ATI card does is for gaming, but I want to know if it really a big boost for video (mostly watching anime).

With the Mobility Radeon HD cards, you'll see a good power in terms of HD format types of stuff (and some video playback formats). So if your Anime is in HD format, then you would definitely see a good jump of performance over the integrated or whatever. Though, they have HD ability as well, but yeah.

I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money for it though, but eh.

I noticed, although what i watching was 720p, some blurryness in high action scenes. I'm not sure if the screen/power improvement from my last system makes it much easier to see flaws  or if i just got a bad screen.

Blurriness/ghosting seems to me more a problem with the screen than the graphics card. Most LCD screens will experience this problem to some extent, depending on what's being displayed.

    From Anandtech's LCD buyers' guide:
It's hard to tell if it's actually a bad screen or if you're just more sensitive to ghosting, especially if you originally came from a CRT monitor.

ok guys, I was trying to replace the hdd with seagate 7200rpm, anyways, I followed the guide post ont his forum, and I have done hdd replacement many times on other comp, somehow this time I couldnt get it to work. I was wondering for the ribbon cable, does the side with pins face down or up? I figure there is only one way, because the cable is not long enough, then I don't know what went wrong there. And if by accident, I broke the cable, where can I order a new one.

    Thanks in advance.
