Does any1 know what are some CANADIAN shops that I can go to, to purchase a good quality screen protector for the Vaio SR 13'3? I need a nice clean sheet to cover the laptop without glares and making it look glassy like the macbook. Any suggestions?

I would like to know more about the battery care - I don't want to have a shorter battery life as a result of the battery being charged constantly if it is left in with the AC power cord plugged in. How should I go about this?

Second, can anybody enlighten me on their own power plans?

And lastly, does anyone shut down their computer when they go to bed? Or do you just put it on hibernate?

Please let me know, and feel free to provide anymore helpful information on how to maintain/care for the VAIO SR. Thanks a lot!

Hibernate is pretty much the same thing as shutting down; it's a full power-off. I always hibernate because it'll take to long to set up everything each day.

why can people make cool accessories for the SR like macs do. Have you seen their keyboard skin, really nice i tell you, it not those clear plastic skins, its like a rubbery thing that has letters on the skin ansd its all black, sigh..

those keyboard protector makes the laptop looks really ugly and makes it look cheap..
my mom's macbook has one, and when people see it they all think it's ugly.
and it's so much easier to type without the protector..
people just worry too much about buying skins and protectors for their laptops... i never used one for my VAIO that I bought back in 2001, and it's still working just fine.

do you mean like it looks even better than without the protector? lol
we didn't get some cheap protector either, we got the iskin one, but it still looks like crap.
macbooks keyboard (both the new and old ones) touches the screen even without the protector, with the keyboard protector, everytime you shut the lid, and open it, you will see marks all over the screen

I bought a SR250J (no ATI card) but my estimated Battery Life is only 2½ hours from a 100% charge on the Power Saver setting in Vista... I was expecting a lot more based on specs and reviews, anyone have an explanation or idea about this?

THe estimation may be wrong, i think if i remember correctly there was someone that had a post saying how their estimation was wrong.

I guess you could just leave it on and not do anything, and see how long it lasts.

Thanks. I have used Vista before but this is my first Vista system, so my first guess is that the estimate is off since it's brand new. Are poor estimates a known/common issue in Vista? Any ideas how to snap the estimation into shape?

Perhaps it has something to do with being the first charge? I would appreciate anyone's comments or suggestions.

Hi everybody I just received this beautiful laptop, and have noticed how much bloatware it comes with!! It's crazy. Anyways is it safe to remove most if not all the programs or are their any that I should keep. I mean anything sony related. Ex. I don't want to accidentaly remove the drivers for the webcam.

    Thank you.

I heard that bluetooth was a hassle and you have to charge it frequently, i m really considering buying either a logitech VX nano or Logitech v450 with the nano reciever. I really like those two because the receiver is soo small, its as big as a nickle and only half a centimeter sticks out of the usb port

I recommend it, I picked up the nano vx myself and it's fantastic, I don't even notice the receiver and you can move it to an adapter that connects to your desktop and use the mouse there even if you wanted to.

    Hi,
Came across this site today and just had to join.
I'm planning on buying an SR-26GN from India (from a Sony Showroom), in Jan 2009.
I need some advice from you guys on whether this is a good decision on my part? It's costing my 75k; and it's my first laptop - I usually lug my desktop around wherever I go, and this is going to be a major buy.
    ;)

has anyone used this guide to do a semi clean install of vista on the vaio SR?
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=146033
It´s supposed to work for all vaio notebooks, but doesn't mention the SR as one of the tested models...
racein, im afraid this is a common thing with sony. my old FE was incredibly low when compared to other laptops (dell, toshiba, hp..), sound is better with external speakers but still much lower than when those speakers are connected to a different brand laptop. I don´t know why sony does that.

    with the function key.

    Fn+F5 Decrease brightness
    Fn+F6 Increase brightness

    (volume is Fn+F3 / F4)

    Instead of launcher.exe/launch.exe, I killed VAIORecv.exe.

Hey, I asked this in the dedicated thread but maybe I'll get a better response here...

I am just wondering how other SR owners cope with the battery life estimate issue. I love my new laptop but for me it's a nuisance thus far.

Does the estimate become more accurate as it gets lower? Are you using third party application? I am just wondering how people who have had their system longer than me handle this. I appreciate the feedback, thanks guys!!

I'm having a problem on my new SR290 where whenever I startup I can two "Windows cannot find the target!" boxes, and then everything works fine. I guess its because I uninstalled something incorrectly/uncompletely but I have gone through msconfig multiple times and everything seems OK. any suggestions besides completely starting over or living with it?

    Hi There,

I did the same thing and everything look fine except I could not get the FN hotkey to work. I tried install almost all sony-ware from recovery, but still no luck. Did you able to get the FN + F3.... for brightness and volume? mind to share? Thanks

Hi, Yes, all of my fn-keys are working, including sound, brightness, pg up/pg down, mute, etc.

From the recovery folder->VAIORecv.exe program, I installed all of the drivers listed. (Be sure to click on the "drivers" tab.) I believe my fn keys were working immediately after just installing vista though... that is, before installing anything through the recovery program.

    anyways, hopes this helps. =)

    hey guys,

I just got my SR-290J CTO and I do not see my optical drive listed under vaio PM that would allow me to disable it. I tried reinstalling sony utility and still no go. I am running stock Vista HP 64 bit.

Do I need to install some special software to be able to power down Optical drive? I have the Optitrac drive....

    Please Advice ...

P.S: Tony you seem to have the same drive as me yet you have the power down option... what gives?

    I have a new Vaio Sr-290.

How can I turn-off the screen? In my old laptop (Asus w2) I could do it using Fn+F8.
    Thanks!

Yes, I have it. I don't know if it will be useful but is cool

I am not sure why I don't get that option.... what version of Vista do you have? 32 or 64 bit? Also can you see what program allows you to turn it off? maybe I can manually download it from Sony and install it.
