Just put in your first recovery disc and let it autorun. It's basically the recovery console on DVD and from that you can reinstall any of those other programs.

Just go to www.sony.com/windows7 and follow the steps to apply for the Windows 7 upgrade. It'll tell you more specifically what options you have for sending in "proof of purchase". I just scanned my invoice and sent it in through email.

My menu to make recovery disks disappeared from my little bar at the bottom of the screen (taskbar?). Where can I find it again? Also, is it normal for the bottom left corner of the laptop to become quite warm?

Im right about to purchase the SR, but recently heard that the nvidia 9500mgs on the Dell xps studio 13 outperforms the Sony vaio sr's radeon hd 4570.

    Is this true?

Ok i just went through the same debate my self sr vs xps 13

from what i read 4750 is slightly better, also sr weighs less, and the build quality is MUCH better, i mean who puts leather on a laptop???? also with deals from sony i got a better laptop for less(my 490j vs $1300 cto dell)

Actually leather on XPS 13 looks pretty nice. Build quality is good as well, there is no flex in the chassis, keyboard is good, and overall it's one of the better looking laptops out there. The problem is that hybrid SLI graphics that they have which is really built-in 9400 with discrete 9200. Not all games will take full advantage of the combo.

Really, the main concern is that the laptop runs hot and that graphics driver question. Of course on the other hand support is probably better (if you get US based support) and VT is enabled.

These Sony deals and 4570 make SR a better buy in my mind, not build quality.

im not thrilled with the build quality on the SR either, i dont even care that its a sony....

only reason its worth it is because core2duo 2.53 with that video card and 4gb ram packed into a small 4lb machine with a nice screen

not gonna find that anywhere else for $1000 range

What is the exact percent off via Bing on the SR? I can't find any real information. Bing just states 10-18% once I load J&R's website.

Quick question about the rebate bundle. I read in a post on this forum that you could leave the business name and type blank, but when I do that I am unable to register. What should I do?

Go to bing.com.. press the shopping link, go to cashback stores, Find J&R, and then go to store. You get 10-14% cashback from that in 60 days

J&R has a rebate for 100 dollars off the vaio making it $1250. Also no tax if you not living in new york.

Purchase an HP printer along with your computer and get 70 dollars for that. ( http://forms.young-america.com/90751_HP12-53-1499-3 06-10-09.pdf)

and then when you receive your laptop apply for the free sony bundle (battery, slim ac adapter, case or dock, mouse, ac adapter) http://www.rebate-zone.com/default.asp?PN=SY0012

    really good deal after everything.

    hope this helps

Wow, that's great. So to confirm things:

Sony Vaio VGN-SR430J/B Original Price: $1349.99
    Sony $100 Rebate: $1249.99
    Cashback 10-14% Approx. $125 - $175: $1075 - $1125

With free shipping and no tax, because I live outside of New York. I should be paying only between $1075 and $1125 after all the rebates and cashback? What determines how much cashback I get?

I might get the J&R deal but I was really wanting a faster cpu. How much difference is there between the 2.53 and the 2.8?

Also how long does it take you to get the Cashback from Bing?

if you have an old laptop lying around sony has a trade in promotion $300 bucks for your old laptop and purchasing a new one. I would find a laptop worth $20-50 and trade it in to save more money

So I can buy the Sony SR notebook from JR.com and just send in the proof of purchase along with my trade-in laptop and I get the redemption check? In other words, I don't have to buy from the Sony store to receive this promotion and my total will be about $850 after all rebates/discounts etc? This sounds too good to be true.

I live in Asia too (Viet Nam) but the price from the Sony retail store isn't too terrible (mine's around $1650) but back to few years ago and it sucks too. Btw, what specs does the $3.5k laptop that you were talking about have?

Would I be correct in assuming I can just throw in a couple of 2gb DDR3 RAM sticks into the SR490 after i've recieved it?
Or is it limited to only DDR2?

Also does anyone know if this voids any warranty, as I'm aware of some manufacturers saying its fine (as long its done properly & the RAM isn't the cause of whatever problem you may have).

    Thanks

Oh and also reading elsewhere in another forum that on some older VAIO models they were using 1.8" HDDs & that the BIOS wouldn't allow anything larger than a 128gb capacity.

I'm guessing this is no longer the case and that the SR490 will be using a standard 2.5" HDD & without any size limitation (within reason) by the BIOS, thus a 2.5" HDD in anything up to 500gb (largest available here) would be fine?
