I posted this in the SR thread, but thought I should post in the Z thread since it makes more sense :p

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I need to buy a laptop for uni within the next few days and am looking for a thin, stylish, good looking laptop but that has as much power as possible.

The sony Z is perfect, except 2 things: the 9300 is not a good video card, I was hoping to get something like a 8600 at least. Also, its pricey and isnt even out in canada yet.

So let me ask you guys. When is it coming out in Canada? How much will it be? Is it possible to get a significant discount? And is the 9300 capable of running modern games such as SC2, GW, CS:S?

I wont be playing games like crysis or anything, Im not a hardcore gamer. Oh also, I will be watching shows, movies, nd using this laptop for everythingg (which is a lot).

My options as of right now are:
    Zepto Nox/Mythos
    Sony Vaio Z
    Sony Vaio SR

Thanks in advance for any help.

TorontoGuy, Here's a side profile of a Z, including someone's hand. We're you expecting it to be be any thinner? I personally don't think it's thin like the TZ. Though, there are similarities but, by no means is it Ultrathin. It's very portable and definitely travel-friendly, but it's not thin. Thin would be like the MBA for example. Does that help you in anyway?

Maybe, someone can lend their opinion...

Yea I appreciate it bro, now Im not lookin at Macbook Air thin, although it would be nice, but still no, dont expect it. In the end though, in all honesty even though im sounding like im trying to justify myself, I found the SZ780 a very sleek machine, I jjust had to high expectations, and then I got that stupid screen defect as it was a CTO, so I LUCKILY got it returned thanks to the President of Sony. But yea in the end, I dont want something too small, cuz ill be doing basic gaming, thats how I know I wont go wrong with the size. Like even if the TZ was just as powerful, it would not be practial for me, thats why they made TZ the way it is, just enough power for applications and business work on the go, not for even basic gaming, cuz u cant take a first person shooter like BF2 for example and start aiming at little tiny guys lol. Not to mention trying to get a comfortable shooting position with that tinyy keyboard. Infact I hope the Z is not to small for me. The SZ780 hit it for me just right. k im out of breath.

You have a pretty short turnover period. lol jk

My question is, is Z590UCB the ONLY pre-configured Z that's made in the US? Or are all the business models of the Z made in the US?

If the lower-end pre-configured Z590's (NFB & NGB) are made in the US, I'm definitely going to go with the 570.

I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but I've noticed on some pictures that the Z has a glowing orange light on the battery, while on others it has a green light. Is the orange one from the larger capacity battery?

Doh, that sucks. My date hasn't changed from 8/15/2008...but it clearly hasn't shipped. I'm planning on calling them tomorrow to see what's going on. I don't mind a delay but it would be nice if they could at least have a more accurate "order information". It's useless if the date passes and there's no change.

Naus, very nice pictures. Where did you get them?

If you got them from a website it would be nice if you post that source, that would be nice to the author of that website too.

It's supposed to arrive here on thursday. I'll post my experience if I see it.

Seems to be 9/9/08 for the P8400 CPU, 8/26/08 for the P8600, and 9/2/08 for the P9500. All of these delays are on the Z590 model.

Z540 doesn't seem to have any difference in ship dates between CPU's.

    Very strange.

*changes are not reflected in the order status page, only on the CTO product page

You all have me thinking, if your Z orders from P1 and SonyStyle are delayed for whatever reason, do you think preconfigured models destined for retail stores such as Best Buys and Circuit City be delayed as well? Do any of you expect for stores to get them in first since there may have been advanced planning beforehand as to what configurations Sony wants for retail stores to carry? Maybe, these CTO's, Configured Orders and Store Brand models are all being built at the same time and will reach everyone in and around the same time.

I doubt it. For instance, the Z570 model on SonyStyle is in-stock and ready to be shipped next day. The delays seem to be unique to the CTO's.

Can some please comment on the level of 'fastness/looseness' of the battery, the fan noise, and keyboard (compared to Thinkpad)?

The biggest letdown for me in the SZ (which i purchase 2.5 years ago when it first came out) are the high fan noise and loose battery (that doesn't fasten onto the chassis tightly, unlike Thinkpads or Fujitsu).

Surely they get it first? That's where I've just got mine from (Z11VN/B). Other stores have the lower models now too.

Must leave it in the box until tonight though - too much work to do - looks beautiful though.

When did you order yours from SonyStyle UK. I thought the first batch wasn't due to be shipped until 21st Aug and then the second batch on the 28th.

Can you please post some pics of yours. I would also like confirmation where the \ key is on the keyboard.

    Thanks.

That's what I thought too, so I was quite surprised that stores already had it, and very pleased that I hadn't ordered it from Sony Style. The stores I spoke to all received it yesterday. Mine came from the Sony Centre as they have the exclusive on the VN/B.

    Hi,

Which Sony Centre did you get it from and did they give any discount? SonyStyle said i can have 5% but not sure if Sony Centres will do this. I'd rather buy it from a Sony Centre too.

I just phoned several sony centre, ie Staines, Brent Cross, Baker Street and none of them have got it. One said there is no such laptop lol.

Baker Street said they getting some in on Friday however, £1749 is the best price they can do for the VGNZ11VN/B.CEK.

I just phoned Sony Style Sales and ordered it for £1661,54 (5% discount). Mine will be dispatched 29th Aug using UPS (Standard 3-5 Days) so i should have it 3/4 Sept.

The \ is to the left of the Z key as usual.

TCR. No discount possible at all. Left having decided to order it on the phone for 5% off, then turned around and went back in as I didn't want to wait two more weeks.

    Micro Anvika have it too.

    BTW first impressions.....

There's not a huge difference between the two screens - they had them side by side in the store. If you can read the 13?? one you'll be able to read the 1600 one I'm sure.

    The keyboard is amazing.

    It's, er, kinda light!

If they aren't going to offer 64-bit drivers, i dont see much of a point of getting 4GB of ram... I guess you get dual channel performance throughout your 3gb's...

I want to get mine in person at a Sony Centre because I want to pay part in cash. I phoned the Sony Centre in Kingston Upon Thames and they keep pushing the date back. It's now early September before they have any in. Other places around here that sell the other models will have it in within this week.
