I didn't find the 1600x900 that difficult to read actually. And the pink canadian keyboard version is so awkward....

Yea thats what I was saying and ppl thought Ive gone crazy in a psycho home or something taking drugs. I hopeee it doesnt bother me. What I dont understand is WHY MAKE IT PINK!!!! Why not a nice mellow blue or something, isn't that Sony's goal? All about the beauty!?

The "Z" series VAIO has "just" been released? _Sony must've run through the alphabet and gone around for seconds, 'cause I have one of the first Z series notebooks, the Z1A1, which was released back around February of 2003.

Mhm to the guys who have a Vaio Z
If you load the battery up to 100 or 80% (at evening), what battery do you have at the next day?

At evening 80% and at morning 70%
    It's a little bit bad <.<

It's even worse now. I didn't install anything and removed a lot of programs and I lost capacity! When I right click on my C-drive it tells me I'm using 43GB and there's only 18GB of data on my laptop. 25GB difference?

EDIT: Just found out. Vista's Recovery-points took lot's of GB's on my harddisk. Is there any way to turn the recovery-points off? The weird thing is I haven't got this issue on other vista machines...

Try using diruse.exe to report the size of System Volume Information. Comes in XP Support Tools (don't know about on Vista).

In my quest for a more quieter Z, I decided to cover half the cpu heat vent with some duct tape to see if it would make any difference in terms of noise. To my surprise, it has ended up working pretty well.

The Z is now quieter than before and the cpu temp has only gone up about 5 degree. Before covering the vent, the cpu would idle at around 40c. Now it idles around 45c, which is more than acceptable to me. And I don't feel any difference in terms of heat from the bottom of the notebook or the top.

I'm going to run my Z like this for a while to make sure there aren't any problems and then probably cover half the vent from the inside so that the ugly duct tape isn't visible.

Do you mean covering the entire vent? Yes I tried that but that shot up the cpu temp and made the laptop quite hot as there was no place for the hot air to escape. Covering half the vent works well IMO.

that's wild, you live in Japan and have to wait too? what model did you order?

so being in Japan, how 'hot' is this Sony Z over there, I would imagine in its home Country it's the notebook to have right now.

I'm not sure what the Japan sales figures are, but the 1600x900 screen model has been completely unavailable for weeks (currently not a single store is selling it). I custom ordered my notebook from Sonystyle on August 20th, and they hope to be able to deliver it by the end of September (I was pretty annoyed they only told me this after I paid with a bank transfer...I would have waited until it was in stock to purchase it!). My specs are as follows:

    P8400 2.26Ghz CPU
    1600x900 Screen
    Webcam
NO fingerprint reader (I never use this feature)
NO WAN (in Japan it's locked to DoCoMo I believe)
NO Felica port (it's an RFID chip that I use all the time on my phone but don't need on the PC)
NO Bluray (I still don't see the value proposition for me in having a Bluray drive)
2GBx1 RAM (I have another 2GB DDR3 stick in the mail)
Regular battery (I may order a long-life battery)
200GB Hard disk (I have a Samsung SATA II 64GB SSD sitting here waiting to install myself)
Japanese keyboard (it's no problem typing Japanese on an American keyboard, but I prefer having the extra keys; the Japanese layout is a bit faster to use IMO)
Sony Bluetooth mouse and Sony cleaning kit

I will put Vista Ultimate (I'm a Technet subscriber) on as soon as I receive it. By the way, the 1366x768 model is widely available here; seems the delay is only because of the screen.

I think an owner here who also owns/owned a TZ said the Z's screen is not quite as bright as the TZs? I probably wouldn't notice anyways unless I placed both side by side, it certainly blows away all other laptops in color reproduction like the TZ, truly amazing.

Edit: Nvm, I see the mouse cursor. You need to take a pic in a dark room without the flash... :)

    Ok heres my basic review:

BEAUTIFUL screen. I first opened this laptop in the store, and it shined brighter than the sun. Upon on'ing the laptop, everything was whiper quiet, fan is very quiet, blowing out nice cool air. I couldnt belive like the pic above, when I had it on black background, it was so solid, I was like did this thing turn off? lol. Now this is what really impressed me, speed, how fast this thing goes. All that crap was loaded on the machine, and still it went really fast, way faster than my old SZ780. Smooth as silk. Typing is easy as peasy, the 1600x res illl honestly never use, but its great to have and looks really good with it on. Makes the screen look big yet small. Currently I am creating a recovery CD, and then ill put my Vista Ultimate Sp1 on. Even my girl loves this laptop, she wanted to blow it instead of me loll. (Inside joke). Very light, but that stupid battery HAS to add that extra weight, that they need to do somethiing about definitley, but still light. Furthur testin will take place later on.

Oh yea and I decided to get the 3 year warrenty.

Ha, ok. I now believe you about the pink keys. The use of both green and pink certainly is an interesting choice.

I thought my Z had a lot of decals but the Canadian version you have is the decal winner. I like how they put extra decals trying to sell you accessories on it.

Anyways, glad you finally got yours. :)

i own both. I don't have my TZ right now as its at sony for the recall, but once it comes back i'll take a picture of the 2.

Of course my TZ is over a year old and the Z is brand new and we know that lcd screen's get dimmer over time, so that might be the reason.

Actually, the Z and TZ's screens are LED backlit, which do not dim over time, thats one of its big advantages. I hope the Z is as bright as the TZ as I've been quite spoiled by its screen.

I'd really appreciate the comparison pics dadoes as my next notebook would probably be a Z and I'd like to see how they stack up against each other. :)

So, its only the Canadian keyboards on the Z that have those pink keys?

Yes, the TX's screen was also LED backlit, in fact, it was the first laptop on the market with that technology. I wonder if your LEDs dimmed or it was some other component.

    Random note about the decals...

I "de-badged" and I removed all of mine this morning. I had to use a credit card to lift an edge and then I peeled them off and stuck them on the manual. Some of them are those foil-backed decals so they're a little tougher to lift at first.

I removed the residue using isopropyl alcohol (same stuff used to clean CPUs before you apply thermal grease) and now it's all fun and shiny.

I kind of wanted to leave the blu-ray decal but it was affixed slightly crooked and that was annoying me. :p
