Since nov 2013 no updates for the Vaio Pro 11 have been available. This is a bad thing. There are certain evident shortcomings in this notebook that are not being cured. So I think Sony indeed has left their clients in the cold as they do not focus anymore on notebooks! If I had known...

    Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with my cooling fan. I woke up and switched the laptop on this morning and noticed it's behaving weirdly - revving up and down for no apparent reason. Cycling the CPU/Fan settings from "Power Saver" up to "Performance" makes no difference other than to cause the fan to do the same thing, but faster/louder.

I haven't made any software changes to the computer recently (the latest thing was installing a WiFi driver a week ago through Vaio Update), and the fan behaves like this before Windows loads in any case. The BIOS is up to date and all Windows and Sony updates have been installed.

If I use the Vaio Care diagnostic tool, it returns the message "Cooling Fan: The test has failed" but, brilliantly, makes no recommendations nor refers me to any website. The Sony website doesn't offer any advice on what one should do if any of those hardware tests fail.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and/or know of a solution?

I bought my vaio pro 11 from Japan too. You have to concern the keyboard layout first, Japanese keyboard layout is a bit different with English keyboard and Vaio no international warranty now.
Are you going to Japan or through other party to buy and ship it to you?

    Thanks for your reply
Its from other party (pricejapan) they can ship it to me anytime, they price will be around 180,000 yen.... I have asked them about the keyboard as well and they can't do nothing about it.
As for the warranty its fine for me.
How did you do with the OS? did you clean install with an english version?Do you reccomend me to buy a pro 11?
I wanted to upgrade from the vaio x with a pro 11,i7 8gb ram, no touchscreen.

Vaio not option for change to english keyboard, Sony has this option before...so you have no choice now
Mine is business retail verison come with win 7 pro (JPN), I used Vistalizator to change the language to english, just some vaio software can't change to english. Also they included the win 8 recovery cd to me.
if you choose win 8 pro then you can switch to english via win update.
I love my vaio pro 11. the weight is really light. this month vaio have new model, may be you can compare first

Yes, two models: Vaio Z and Z Canvas
Sony didn't update the driver :( now, may be Vaio has update
Also you can go to Vaio pro 13 discussion, a great user uploaded all the driver, I haven't try it, but it should be suitable with Pro 11

Thanks I will try that.....I am very close to buy a 11 inch vaio pro. How did you buy yours from japan? can you recommend me a third party company from where I could buy mine?

I am currently speaking with a third party company at the moment called "pricejapan.com" I don't know if they are legit, but they says that: they can get me a 11in pro, i7, 128gb ssd,8 gb ram (+ wireless adapter and free Targus case) for :
    (139800 Yen + 5480 Yen) x Japan tax 1.08 ( You cannot avoid Japan tax) = 156,902 Yen

    then shipping:

    ( 156902 Yen + 3.8kg cubic weight; Fedex shipping cost 10890 Yen) x shipping insurance 1.009 x our ZERO fee 1.0 x paypal fee 1.04 = 176,074 Yen

so I have to paypal them 176074 yen...which is like 950£....it will take 14-25 days to reach me.

At that time, I'm not familiar how to bought it from japan. I through "buysmartjapan" to help me bought and ship. But the company is really sucks and expensive.
You can also check with fromjapan.co.jp. But I guess the "pricejapan" looks ok.

I'm using 128gb. Available 80gb when first open, now around 50gb left
Windows + Office update ate a lot of space. I feel not enough... I wanna upgrade to 256gb/wifi AC but I'm not comfortable to open the vaio pro and not sure which SSD (m.2 sata 80mm) is compatible with Pro 11...

Regard the battery life, 100% around 6 hours + , I usually charge 80% around 4 hours... it depends on your usage and the brightness
I just bought the sheet battery from ebay (USD100) last month, laptop + sheet battery (80% both) around 13 hours + (I guess win 8 should be longer battery life)

    Hi RenFra
I didn't find any post for how to open Vaio Pro 11
But youtube has video for Vaio Pro 13, it is similar and you can refer it.

I need to replace my 128gb ssd to 256gb later. May be change the AC wifi too.

Just succesfully upgraded to a 500GB Crucial MX200.
I used Paragon migrate OS to SDD and 2 adapters (M2/NGFF to SATA & SATA to USB) for copying Win 8.1 to the new drive.
Then I replaced the SSD, pressed the power button and after 10 long seconds the computer rebooted normally.
It took about an hour in total.

Hi Zonnebloem. I thought a Crucial MX200 is a standard 2.5" SSD drive, so how did you get it into a Vaio PRO11 that uses a special interface for its SSD?

    Thanks for the reply!
The thing is, as long as I do appreciate clean copy of windows without Vaio utilities (or simply rubbish), following Your guide I seem to have failed somewhere 'couse there are some things that doesn't work as it should. Ex. Vaio control won't show the options of keyboard backlight and silent/performance options. Is that common issue? Or maybe You control those features differently? In Bios maybe? I am yet to find those

Delete the device in device manager.
    Restart your computer.
    Install the intel driver again.

I purchased Intel 8260GW which is newer than 7265.
Install the intel driver. Works fine. :)

Relatively new owner chiming in here.

<3 my SVP11 so much! Mine has a cracked keyboard (looks impossible to replace) and I just did a full cleaning and repaste (idles now at mid/upper 40c something rather than mid 50s) and upgraded the wireless from 7260N to 8260AC! I'm also undervolting the crap out of everything to eke out as much thermal performance and battery life as possible!

This thread has taught me that the SSD slot is not pci-e like it's bigger brother unfortunately, but that's good because I was about to buy one :p

My touchpad is also quite dirty, and it's awesome that someone on ebay is selling them, but I'm not quite sure how I'd go about replacing it...

    Cheers!

    Hello again,

Just wanted to report that I swapped out my 128Gb SSD for an m.2 Samsung EVO 850 250Gb model. Works perfectly! And opening the case was really easy too...

Also, now that OpenBSD -CURRENT supports UEFI boot, I'm dualbooting that with Ubuntu 16.04 nightly. I've written a couple of blog posts on how to install with a fully encrypted partition: https://bsdlaptops.wordpress.com/ . Works really nicely apart from non-existent Bluetooth support in OpenBSD.

    Hello,
I own a SVP13 and I'd like to change the SSD upgrade as well.
Could you let me know how you do have performed the cloning process of you SSD to transfert all stock software ?
I'd like to be sure that I have vaio control center and FN+Shortcut will still working (for brightness especially).

Hope you'll be able to help me in this case :)

    Quick questions:
    - multi gesture windows 10 works on the pro 11?
    - where is the NFC located on the laptop?

I found one cheap on ebay, very likely to get one. :D (finally!!)

Does anyone know the part number of the power jack cable (the one inside the laptop, not the external cable)? My laptop is having a lot of trouble recharging...

@Andil: the NFC is under the touchpad IIRC.
