I just tried it and it worked fine
What I did notice is when I disabled it, a little bubble popped up near the clock which is when I noticed the icon that was always there. Do you have that?
It's in the clock bit and looks like a touchpad (not the synaptics one)

After clean install i did not have FN+clickpad and brightness control. Also in vaio center there was no fan modes and audio settings as clear audio +.

I installed all drivers from sony.pl with no result.

Then instead of installing drivers from the polish site i've installed the one for audio from sony US site. Audio problem solved.

Didn't have time to try other drivers from sony.com but i think they might work well. If you have time try what I mentioned.

Who has spent time with the non-touch screen version in the US?

$100 is a good discount over the touch. But does anyone know if battery life is better in the non-touch?

Could you please tell us which WiFi band were you connecting on, your signal strength and link quality as shown by inSSider? It looks from the Sony Community discussion that main issue is with the 2.4 Ghz band and signals of -50 dB and higher work ok. Lower than that and you have the WiFi issue.

I am personally still convinced it is related to antennas, based on everything reported so far.

Yes it looks that Sony have finally realised that something is not quite right with WiFi on their flagship business machine. Unfortunately we may also need a hardware engineer on this case too...

Does anyone know (an informed knowledge, not just a guess) where the UK law stands on the 14 day distance selling act:

    1. Will I will still be able to return my Vaio Pro within 14 days if I chose to pay using a 0% finance scheme offered at the Vaio checkout (but through a non-Sony company) at time of purchase?

    also

    2. Could Sony argue that it isn't covered by distance selling laws because I chose which components were used and so it's 'custom-built'?

The UK distance selling regulations cover you for 7 working days return rather than 14. Sony offers a longer "no questions asked" return period of 30 days. You need to investigate the T&C of the credit agreement to see if there is a penalty for cancelling it within that period or - which is less effort - ask Sony sales line directly.

Does Sony have a 30 day return in all territories except Canada? Here the custom orders are non-returnable and you can't cancel your order after 1 hour.

Just put an order in through UK education store.

980 GBP, got the carbon black touch screen, upgraded to 8GB RAM.

I have MS home and student 2010 already, and got the battery sheet and 4 year's warranty free.

Any advice and tips needed before I get my laptop?

I will have wifi in my room at university, how best to fix this issue? Is it simply update drivers?

How do I fix the fan issue as well? Is it simply if CPU usage increases massively? The battery sheet should prop the thing up at the back so it won't get too hot.

cheers, really looking forward to my first ultrabook, any tips needed for upgrade to Windows 8? 8.1 should hopefully fix everything everyone seems to complain about.

    more sleep issues..

I've tried search this thread and a few others, if I'm missing something please redirect me

since first out of the box the laptop has been having issues entering sleep mode. after installing the initial updates it improved significantly. however, in the last few weeks the problem has gotten significantly worse, even after the most recent BIOS update aug 23. about 1/4 of the time when entering sleep mode (either because idle, lid is closed, or manually put to sleep via settings) the screen will go black, but the LED light remains on. at this point the computer does not respond to anything except a hard reboot.

I have telephoned the sony support, they did a remote session on the laptop and checked all the settings, they were correct. They have suggested I send it in for repair. is anyone else having this problem (I have come across people mentioned wifi wakes pc from sleep, and checked that setting ,but this seems different) is there a quick fix for this to avoid sending the laptop in for 10 business days?

    any help appreciated

    Hey there --

I haven't completely scoured this thread, but has there been an official fix to the wifi issue? I downloaded the patches via VAIO Care and they've done nothing.

I called Sony and they set up a repair for me. Have others done this as well? Seems slightly shady, given I haven't seen others doing this.

    Thanks!

I had a similar issue a few times more after a restart it would remain a black screen but power light still on and had to force a shut down by holding the power button. It was a bit of a pain especially after a windows update restart. I made the recovery usb and did a complete restore and made sure the McAfree software was not installed and it solved the problem and a few other ones

    Hi everyone, :)
I'm interested in buying the Sony Vaio Pro 13, but I belong to the "no idea - you tell me what's good for me" fraction in case of choosing a touchscreen or not. So I have a question to all owners, do you really use the touchsreen in every day life? Also I'm not sure whether I should go with the silver or black version, are there any practical reasons for choosing one of the colours or ist it just a decision of design preference?

I would say get the touchscreen (i did)

I don't use the touchscreen huge amounts but there are definitely times when it makes sense, the start screen is something i get on more with having it, also reading pdf's etc, browsing maps and internet pages it gets used. Also it's great with the galleryHD app for photos.

Mine is mainly used on a desk but I think you would probably use it even more if you had it on your lap.

Also, you're buying a top of the range ultrabook, in my opinion that should include a touchscreen.

I'm also wondering about getting a Vaio Pro. The display is important to me. Is it always a matte display when I order it without touch? Couldn't find informations about this here in Switzerland.
The second thing that bothered me with the touch display is the huge gap between the panel and the glass. Is that gap gone on non-touch displays?

    Hey folks,

I've also ordered my Pro 13 a couple days ago, and hopefully it'll arrive in two weeks or so. I opted for the non-touch version, but I'm still unsure about its build. From the sales-rep I understood that the screen itself doesn't have a glass cover or anything, and that like most laptops, you can directly touch the panel, and it has a bezel around it that is raised slightly. Does anybody actually have any pictures of one from up close?

Also, we're indeed still [insert bad word] in Europe, where we get the Sata SSD, and not the PCI-E unit. I was holding off for a couple days because of this, but decided that I needed a lappy too urgently and that it was still the best option out there without waiting.

Moreover, I asked the sales rep regarding the WiFi issues, and he mentioned that since the new driver release there have been much less returns. Apparently the return rate was massive prior to the release, and now it's dropped dramatically.

Lastly, I'd like to inform you that Windows 7 drivers for the lappy should be arriving any moment now. I asked about it, and I got the impression that they'd be posted this month still. :)

I'm most annoyed about the fact that I forgot to order a sleeve along with it though.... :(

It might, because I didn't have this issue (and my earing is good), as many other people. This doesn't seem to be a widespread issue like the WiFi problem.

    Hello guys.

First time here, here his my first experiences with my first laptop and brand new VAIO Pro 13.

My first impressions were not the best, I had all the issues I could have. High fan noise, slow WIFI, pitch noise, crappy OS install with McAfee and all that sh*t from Sony softwares...

I immediatly formated and installed Windows 8.1 Pro RTM (9600) and I managed to have a stable and minimal install.

About Graphic drivers and 8.1 :
I had the graphic drivers issue some mentioned here with 8.1 aka "No TV signal" on the screen after 10-15min of use, had to format 3x to find some working drivers (seems some reported HDMI out works again). I cannot confirm if it's a problem with the initial driver (Microsoft Basic Display Adapter) or/and silent Windows updates when connected to network which caused this issue so my advices are : You should NOT connect to WIFI / Ethernet when installing 8.1 until you manually installed proper graphic drivers and install graphic drivers immediatly / as fast as possible after your installed 8.1. The last drivers from Intel website didn't work for me plus the Intel graphics software UI crashed. The drivers working for me are the ones on the Sony site ("INDVID-00296376-0082.EXE" from 20/06/2013 aka Intel Version 9.18.10.3071 from 13/03/2013). The system is stable, tested 4h-6h without the TV signal issue BUT I have some issues with IE (nop with Chrome), maybe related to the use of GPU to render the graphics webpages. (I have some visually "broken" elements, buttons...).

About Fan noise issues : Actually I don't have the fan noise issue anymore but can't tell WHAT solved the problem. My suggestions are : Fresh install of W8 or W8.1 + BIOS update + Update the Intel drivers (Chipset + Graphics) + network connected for silent updates / Windows updates, some reboots and MAGIC happens !

About WIFI issues : The only thing I can say is install the last Intel WIFI drivers, it seems to help in signal and speed... Look for the Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 on the intel download center. I use the 16.1.3.1 version from 9/3/2013. Seems better than old stock drivers.

About Pitch noise issues : I didn't remember if I had this problem with the stock W8 install but with fresh 8.1 install, I got it. Solution as some said/found here : Disable "USB Selective Suspend" in your power settings.

About Screen backlight flickering issues : You need to disable in the Intel graphics drivers, power, battery the "Display power saving technology".

Fx touches for the sound and the brightness work without installing Sony stuffs. Keyboard backlight is automatic and seems working.

I also tried to install 2x VAIO Update Software because I couldn't find all the drivers but don't have a clue if it installed successfully and where it installed... But finally don't need it anyway...

The drivers I manually installed :

    • Intel HD Graphics (from Sony)
    • Intel WIFI drivers (from Intel)
    • Intel chipset drivers (from Intel)
    • Intel MEI drivers (from Sony)
    • Intel Smart Connect Technology drivers (from Sony)
    • NXP NearFieldProximity Provider drivers (from Sony)
    • Synaptics SMBus ClickPad drivers (from Sony)
    • Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device drivers (from Sony). Install it then you should have the last two unknown devices, manually update drivers for each, point to C:\Windows, it should find and install the drivers.

If I'm not wrong, I think I listed all drivers to install to solve the unknow devices after a fresh 8.1 install.

I hope it will help a little bit.

Used this laptops few hours and very happy with it. Needed one for the college, hope it'll work great.

Tell me if I forgot something and contact me if you need help.

    Cheers.

    PS: I have a SVP1321X9EB. Touchscreen/i7/4GB/128GB/Windows 8 Pro/4 years warranty.
PSS: Does anyone tested W7 on this laptop ? I'll have to install and use it for college. I'll use it as VHD dual-boot. Any drivers issues ?

I am about to order two Vaio Pro 13s for family members, but before I do I just want to know if the WiFi issue has been fixed permanently?
And was it a software issue or is it a hardware issue that affects certain laptops?

    Thanks.

No, the black non-touch (matte screen therefore) is available outside the US, and is part of the cheapest build-your-own Vaio model for the pro 13.

This is not really easy or a specific answer to this. The initial problem was fixed you notice this when you do the first update however some users are still having problems if you read the sony lounge thread it's currently inconclusive if this is a software or a hardware for some that are having problems. The main posts there seem to be people using Asus routers

If you read the reply from the sony software engineer he notes they have specifically bought routers to try and identify the problem and is dealing on a one to one basis

It's unclear in so far no one knows if it's intel, sony, routers, or other just lots of speculation be people who post there who have the problem its unkown how many do not have a problem or have I would hazard a guess that it is not as widespread as some of issues Apple has had or any other manufacturer you only read the bad news on these forums

Thanks for your reply. We don't use ASUS routers so I guess it is worth a shot if I can return the laptop in case something is wrong.
One last question: how would I quickly identify if it has WiFi issues: just low signal strength as soon as I walk away from the router?

Obviously some people are having issues but for me the last driver update resolved any outstanding issues.

I work on multiple client sites and work on many public wifi (airports and hotels etc). Before the last driver update I had one client site (BT home hub) and a 3G wifi hotspot that I could not connect to. After the last driver update I can work anywhere without connectivity or speed issues. If I was being critical then range is a little less than some other devices but never enough to be a show stopper.

Exactly at worst you will have to return them for a refund

When you 1st switch on your WiFi icon may only show 2 bars until you DL the update do this one 1st manually as it speeds up the whole process (do not activate the MCafree stuff) afterwards you should have 4/5 bars showing, you can then simply test the unit around your house to see if its satisfactory.

You can try this app inSSIDer Office – Because You and measure your signal strength -40 to -50 is good
