WIN 8.1 Clean install: To get all the options in vaio control center you need to use vaio care and reinstall the original drivers (Advance Tools > Restore and Recovery > Reinstall Applications and Drivers) from the usb recovery you should have created.

That would be interesting, light and fast 15.5 inch laptop in ultrabook form factor.
They could put much bigger battery, improve cooling and pack 256x1440 screen :-D
Shame it's most probably only a typo.

yeah i think that partition is more than just a recovery partition. it's probably the rapid wake partition as well. and afaik, no one has managed to put it back on after a clean install. everyone has to go back to the factory image.

on my clean install, i somehow managed to get the sound and stuff back. but no matter what, i couldn't get rapid wake or the video processing options back.

that doesn't work if you delete the recovery partition (which is also the rapid wake partition). it just throws up an error.

hi.... have been silent reader here for some time :)
the sony asia webpage showing that the NEW vaio pro is still having the same wifi card (a/b/g/n), not (a/b/g/n/ac) as in the Italy's webpage, and they put an footnote on it basically saying that wifi perfromance is affected by many factors therefore may vary from one device to another.

the exact words on the webpage reads:

    Wireless LAN Type IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n*7
Wireless LAN Data Rate Maximum transmission speed: 300 Mbps*7, Maximum receipt speed: 300 Mbps*7
    Bluetooth Bluetooth® standard Ver. 4.0 + HS*8

    footnote #7 reads:
"*7 The communication speed varies depending on the distance between communication devices, existence of obstacles between such devices, the device configuration, the radio conditions, and the software in use. In addition, communications may be cut off depending on the radio conditions.
The maximum communication distance can vary depending on the obstacles or the distance between the communication devices, the radio waves, the operating system or the software being used."

it seems that their "NEW" or refreshed product is actually the same OLD machine... only the OS os win 8.1 plus some extra software (e.g. photoshop etc). which means it remains the same craps.

if that is true it is misleading to brand it NEW or refreshed!
as I live in asia and would logically buy the asian version it is very disappointing.

    any thought?

what rapid wake, it boots in 5sec and returns from sleep in 2..seriously i have all options and i only left sonyoem partition so there is no reason to return to win 8 stock IMO

edit: rapid wake is just like hibernate which i dont use anyway but you can still create a partition for rapid wake and it will work.

It would really 'suck' if they kept the old machine instead of a proper 'refresh'.
I ordered my machine recently in The Netherlands directly from Sony and they said it would take a month before it can be delivered.
Does this mean that they just have many orders to fulfill first or are they waiting new parts that fixes the wifi problem etc?

Upon checking the order page again, the wifi does seem to be
    "Draadloos LAN(a/b/g/n/ac)"

When ordering online, it is possible to have a 'clean start' so without all the bloatware.. is this really an 'online ordering' only feature or did anyone see something like this in shops as well?

I've never seen anywhere on the pro 13 a mention of "rapid wake". Mine boots in 5 secs when it's completely shut off.

If you have ordered a clean start then I think it's takies a month more because it is considered a custom order rather than a stock order

Who knows what WiFi card it will have I have not seen any specifics which is why I went hunting on the Asian sites

I think he was referring to sleep opposed to hibernate

    From Sony site:

    Never Shut Down
Whether you're done for the day or just stepping out for a latte, there's rarely a reason to power down your VAIO Pro. Featuring Sony's Rapid Wake technology, simply enter into energy-saving sleep mode that helps keep data safe and secure. Battery drain is minimal, so your PC can stay asleep for days2. Ready to rouse it from slumber? Lift the lid and get right back to business in about two seconds.

it's like a hybrid sleep in a way. but it's faster and uses way less power. since in hybrid sleep, it's essentially in normal sleep mode (saves to memory) but it saves to the hibernation file (on C drive) before it goes to sleep also. it'll also wake up momentarily to go into hibernation when the battery is low). it just takes longer to go to sleep than normal sleep. while still using as much power as sleep does. if it's in hibernation when you go to turn it on, then it takes even longer to wake up.

with rapid wake, it saves to it's own partition (like hibernation for data integrity), and enters a super low power sleep state so the battery lasts way longer. it just stays in it's low power sleep even when the battery is low. so at any time you turn it on, it's instant.

obviously if you never use the function, then it's a moot point anyways.

i've already tried making a partition for it, and it still didn't work so iono. but i don't need the hard drive space nearly as much as other people. i just use a 64gb SD card in the pro all the time if i need the space. it's more than what's on the partition anyways.

Well, good news. I was able to get a recovery usb from a very nice and helpful person (I was able to drive to him and get the disk, awesome :) ).

At first the recovery started nagging there was a partition missing, so it could not start. So I thought I was still in trouble. In the end that was solved by first installing win8 the normal way (clean win8 install), and then start from the recovery usb and do the factory reset. It seems it needed to find a win8 partition of sorts (or at least a certain (gpt?) layout on the disk, not sure).
It does however still miss the 260mb and the 'SONYSYS' partition. I guess that is not needed after a factory reset then :)

Now I am back to default, have more ssd space and everything works great. Also the windows key, service tag and serial are as they should be. So those things are not stored into the recovery or anything when making the disk, so everyone can use a recovery disk from another Vaio Pro 13 on their own Vaio Pro 13 I guess. Perhaps it's helpful to someone in the future, so here you have it for future reference :p

    Hi all,

I'm seriously considering a 13" Vaio Pro as a replacement for my current machine, but I'm in need of some feedback about the quality of gesture support on the touchpad. Essentially, I want to know how well gestures work, especially two finger scrolling and whatever the gestures are for going backwards and forwards through web pages. Bear in mind that on my current machine these work flawlessly.

Also, how loud is the fan (if audible at all) during light use? By "light use" I mean browsing, watching flash video (including HD), word processing, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

after 2 days of use you will notice that the touchpad is the best ,it's really amazing (I disabled the right click and change some setting ) ,gesture very smooth and better than any other windows machine i have ever used , I used my touchpad to increase\decrease the sound volume ,mute it,minimize all windows without any problem .

the fan always silent even when watching a movie with some browsing and office documents , the only way to get the fan audible is play some games or when windows 8.1 maintenance start .

I'll second that, even though the MBA/MPRO probably have the best trackpads that's only under OSX underr bootcamp it's no better or should I say equal to the SVP IMO and compared to my Mrs older MBAir the SVP is better especially on back click/right click mouse equivalent

    What fan noise :)

    Hello everyone,

I really need your help. I uninstalled vaio control center to see if I could get some features working by reinstalling it. Here are the errors I am getting: previous version not found, current version already installed. I have tried system restore and that did not work either. VCC is there but does not open up. I also downloaded the windows 8 files from earliest release and installed those and updated and it got installed but STILL does not open. When I click the icon Nothing happens. I Do not want to reformat my computer. Plz plz someone help me out. I would truly appreciate it!

assuming you are on win 8.1: uninstall everything from VAIO (care, control center, diagnostics etc). Reboot and reinstall/download VAIO Care (8.3.0.08220) + Vaio Care Recovery updater. Then go to diagnostcs > Restore and recovery > reinstall applications and choose all the VAIO programs.

Have you checked within control center?

    Go into VCC
Second option on the left should be "Input Device"
half way down on the right is:
    Keyboard Backlight
Default option is Always on for plugged in
And Turn on in low light conditions for / Turns off after 10 seconds when on battery

Could someone please tell me which screen is the best...the matte (non-touch) or glossy (touch) one? Also ,does the non-touch display lack the glass, and so does it hollow into the frame?

Yes, the matte screen lacks glass and hollows into the frame but not by much, I'd say that it's 1-2 mm.

    Hello everyone,

I just bought a Sony VAIO Pro SVP13215PXB 13.3-Inch Core i7 Touchscreen Ultrabook (Carbon Black) and I know its late but was there a fix for the WiFi? I will be using this laptop to mostly Skype (7-10 hours long) and do some coding for school. So WiFi connection is critical and Webcam Image Quality.

Reason, why I asked I had the ThinkPad S1 Yoga and the connection was horrible and the camera was a joke for 720HD, but the spec of the laptop is awesome. I will only be using G radio signal at home but at school or anywhere else I would like to be prepared. I did order a replacement wifi card (7260NGW) from MFactors.com. Not sure the Vaio Pro 13 has a whitelist on this card or not but the card won't be here until 2-3 weeks. Any input would be grateful.

    Thanks!

I will use the Vaio Pro 13 either for light programming and mostly for writing and retro-gaming. How much does the glossy touch display reflect? Do you think I might have problems with it?

You do not know me, I am picky, very picky. Yes, I did go around the shops, and not only for once: I've gone back more and more times before I decided to buy it.
But the fact of watching it in the stores, where the light is (inevitably) not so high, cannot give an idea of how the panel reflects (for example in the light of the sun), for this reason the only useful thing is the opinion of those who already use the notebook.

svp1321ggxbi report: NO FLEX, NO WIFI ISSUES, 870 GRAMS

    lots of people have issues with their touchscreen machines so i am reporting as follows;

-if you give up touchscreen you get upgrades on other specs at same cost

-there is almost 0 flex on my ggxbi keyboard, i expect the same for the other non-touchscreen versions

-internet sources weigh the non-touchscreen models at 870 grams, far lighter than touch...

-the wifi is great with 0 cutouts and great range

-trackpad is solid (some minor sticking in bottom left as with other units)

hope this helps others choose which models they buy

CRAZY MOUSE ISSUE: MOUSE RIGHT CLICKS AUTOMATICALLY

Guys, I have my SVP-13 for 6 months now, and this week il started to right-click automatically, like crazy. The pointer sometimes moves alone, and it right-clicks alone... I don't use any other USB, avoiding any conflicts, but it does it anyway... Anyone with the same issue?

PS: also, does ALT+TAB between Word documents to you also take an annoying 1 to 3 seconds to switch?

    Thanks !

While I like my silver model, I didn't realize it scratched so easily. The scratches look nasty since they expose the black body color.

Has anyone found any covers or skins for this laptop?

ive been working on a similar problem for weeks (jumping 2-3 inches up and to the left diagonally and persistently once the problem is triggered until a sleep or restart).

so far the best luck i have had is with shutting off all synaptics settings and slowly turning them on one by one. i am still working on this and will report back. for the last 12 hours or so i have been stable with horiz and vert scrolling, and tapping without zones.

please update me here on by pm.

ps is yours a touch or non touch?

I also have the right-click problem. It is not related to the external mouse I often use which I first thought was the issue. Turning on and off the trackpad sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't. it mostly starts out in Word. I removed drivers, reinstalled, nothing helps.

Hello Vaio Pro (and former Vaio Z) communinity,

What is the consensus after a few months on the Vaio Pro 13 vs. Vaio Z 2013 front?

My Z1 is dying on me after about 3 years (SSD issue) and I have the opportunity to buy any of these two laptops for more or less the same amount (~500€, refurbished) with basically the same specs. I'd like some inputs from the community about what to do :)

    Here are the candidates:

    SVP1321D4E:
    - Intel Core i7-4500U (Dual-Core 1.8 GHz)
    - 8GB RAM
    - 256 GB SSD
    - Full HD screen (non-touch)

    SVZ1311A4EB
    - I7-3612QM (Quad-core 2.1 GHz)
    - 8GB RAM
    - 256 GB SSD
    - 1600 x 900 screen
    - PMD w/ Blu-Ray burner

That would be for personal use, mostly for web surfing, media-center, photo editing (Lightroom) and some light gaming.
I don't really care about weight difference or PMD.
I'm inching toward the SVZ but the lower rez screen is bugging me (I'm used to the FHD panel on the Z1).
Win 8 on the Vaio Pro is a bummer but I can always downgrade it to Win 7 if needed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks :)

Thanks for the answer. Exactly, when using Word it sucks, it keeps right clicking... Did you try to contact Sony already? I'm thinking about it. Also, did you try the synaptics settings that lip-sink suggested?

Hello Micheal, I remember that Sommblog (post page 196 - see above his picture) also had the same issue loose/unglued screen issue. I am just seeing my SPV13 starting to have some of the various problems described here (e.g. right-click issue), but I am not using it a lot, since I am still working in my old computer. I will start using it more now, and I am afraid of these issues you are all describing.

I have had very bad luck with Sony support. I don't want to waste more time with them. I tried the settings, but it occurred again this afternoon.
