What does that mean. Do you mean it would be interesting if it is getting replaced? or if there was a link to the replacement? or if it is being discontinued?
In looking through this thread I was not able to find mention of this matter.
-
Two reasons:
1. The first. The Sony Vaio Y in my mind has always been a competent notebook. It's probably the only notebook in my mind that gets top scores in just about every notebook index. It's solidly built, it looks nice, and its hardware doesn't do too badly
2. I've been talking about a potential hardware refresh for months. Putting a lower-end i5 into this puppy alongside an integrated GPU that can decode HD movies would put this competent notebook smack into MBP 13 territory for $200 less. The MBP touchpad's nice, but not worth $200 IMO.
*Duck flame war* -
Well, don't take my word for it. Check out SonyStyle.com. They will not sell you one. To me this usu. indicates that they are done with that unit until the refresh comes out.
-
Oh no, I'm speculating too. We could be wrong. That's what internet forums are for. Exchanging info and verifying speculative theories!
-
It maybe because its a Sony brand and the price is low and everything keep on buying it?
-
Guys, what are the chances Y gets an update with the new i3 and i5 ULV being rolled out by mid-2010? I need a notebook by the end of June - early July and I might opt for this one as I'm looking for long battery life, but current C2D ULV does not sound like an encouraging update from the usual C2D line up.
-
Y no mo on Sony website.

-
The UK site just got updated with the VPCY21S1E/L models ( http://bit.ly/c3jTrK). And yes, the chipset is HM55!! No CPU clock speeds yet, but they'll be receiving the latest batch of ULV I presume. Looks awesome, except for the weird color selection (Aqua and Pink)
-
It says it's getting a processor with a 3mb L3 cache and DDR3 RAM. Not much else known.
-
So, HM55 chipset. I guess that pretty much means it's getting an i5 type processor?
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
It also says for Turbo Boost N/A, so that means it is probably a Core i3. -
Any more news on this new Y?
-
The french website says it comes with Intel® Pentium® U5400:
VPCY21S1E/G (VPCY21S1E/G) : Spécifications techniques : VAIO & Informatique : Sony
But if you go into the pink/blue colors page, it doesn't have that information... -
First look review of the new Y Sony VAIO Y Series review | Laptops | Reviews | PC Pro
indeed it is the U5400 -
Good find, looks like battery life is pretty decent - 9 hours of light usage and 3.5 hours when pushing it hard. Not as bad as the review made it out to be really.
-
But that CPU sucks right?
As many people here I'm looking for a new laptop and the Y series caught my eye. It's thin, light and gorgeous. But with Intel announcing the i3/5/i7 ULV, I was expecting something with that... -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
The U5400 is basically a Core i5-540UM with hyper-threading Turbo Boost, and other features that make the Core i series a compelling buy over Core 2, missing. -
So it's better than the SU (I misunderstood from the Wikipedia page I read) and it's worth over the previous Y model?
What does the "real" i5-540UM has that this U5400 doesn't? -
Kind of lame. For $800, they should toss in the i5-540um.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
-
It seems like this is not much more to getting a S model.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
For real, the S and Y could be one model offering your choice of full power or ultra low voltage Core i. And if you choose a full power Core i you can choose to add dedicated graphics. -
This article has a nice table showing the differences between the HM55 CULV CPUs: Intel Ultra Thin: CULV Arrandale Boosts Performance and Reduces Size - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News
I think that Sony will offer this laptop at some point with the higher-end processors in a customized package, but I'd be willing to bet that they didn't at first in an effort to just get this thing to market before everyone else. -
The Y and S are the same weight right? So just get the S due to your above listing.
-
The S is a bit over 5 pounds. The Y is under 4.
A nice cost-effective combo is Sony Y+SSD. -
Anyone notice anything about a backlit keyboard in the new Y ?
-
Duh, kind of lame update... I was really expecting 540UM from this one
-
+1
But then again, Sony DOES charge an extra premium for notebooks with specs comparable to those found in other lower-priced notebooks. Not too far from what a certain fruit-named company does.
-
I'd willingly pay up to $50 more for a backlit keyboard upgrade personally. It's just so cool!
-
Update
Sony VAIO Y Series review | Laptops | Reviews | PC Pro
So it's confirmed. A U5400 processor and a supposed 11-hour battery life according to the review.
Cheers. -
Any indication on when the upgrade is going to be available to order?
-
Dunno. This looks promising though. It's available in the UK, so I'd say soon in the US? Probably before back to school season.
-
I've had to "donate" my MBP to my sister for a lump sum since most of my programs are Windows-only and I don't like having to switch between OSX/Windows programs. Plus my school's exam software CAN be a bit glitchy with Boot Camp and VMware installed.
I've decided I'll jump on the new Vaio Y if they discount it at least temporarily by $100 bucks. -
Before I head off to bed, I have to say that it's probably better the Y's not getting i5-520UM/540UM. The culv i5's are known to produce more heat and noise as shown in this Asus review. It's 18w vs 10w when you include the combined integrated GPU functions.
-
Maybe for you, but I wanted something with VT-x support, which the U5400 don't have and the older SU7300 does (as well as the i line).
-
What does VT-X do?
-
That is virtualization support. If you have it (and turn it on) then programs like VirtualPC, VmWare, VirtualBox, Parallels,... can have an easier time in running a virtual operating system on that computer.
-
Does Dexpot count? I'm trying to bring Mac spaces over to Win7. If it's a type of VT, then I'm in trouble.
-
No, that doesn't appear to be related, different use of the term virtualize.
In any case, you wouldn't be "in trouble". Even without VT-x you can still do operating system virtualization (it's just better with it is all). -
Awesome! (Well, at least for me it is!)
I'm reviewing all my options on the table at the moment. The Envy 14 is tempting, but I'm still skeptical about what I'm getting for my money. If Sony would just discount the Y at release for $100 cashback, that'd be awesome. I would totally buy an SSD for this puppy! -
I will be getting my vaio y with su7300 in a week or so i think su7300 will be much better than i5ULV in battery life and heat dissipation i think a notebook of this size has su7300 best suited for it.
-
Where are you getting it from?
-
i purchased it from us in May and getting it shipped.
-
Damn. You got one from their last batch. Now I'm forced to wait...and it doesn't help that they haven't discounted the unit in a while.
At $800, this laptop's a hidden gem. But at $700 after their occasional $100 discount, it's a steal!!!
-
Glad to hear that its a real great lappy... well i brought the $900 one with a higher capacity hard disk and an extra high capacity battery... i desperately waiting for its arrival...
-
Well, hope you enjoy it then!
-
Why do you think that the SU7300 model will have better battery life?
SU7300 10 watts
GS45 7 watts in low power model but the standard mode is 12 watts
Total 17 watts low power mode/ 22 watts standard.
Size-45nm
i5 U5400 and the HM55 chipset is 18 watts combined. I have no idea if it has a low power mode.
However, it is 32nm so it is smaller and therefore battery life should slightly be improved not worse.
If batteries are the same size if you want better battery life i would tend to go for the newer model.
-
Not sure if it means anything, but the Asus UL30JT faced the same fate. i5-520UM processor upgraded from SU7300, but battery life took a hit. -
obviously 18watt>> then 10watt and i think its not worth playing games on a 13 inch laptop atleast so y go for i5 scraficing a long battery life and the reduced heat and noise
