and by low res panel you mean 1366x768 (what i'm used to) or the 1280x800?

the reason i am so worried is because i was in BEST BUY saturday and saw that monster 16 inch with the 1920x1080 res and even tho the quality was crisp & clear, the fonts and some of the words on the web were sooooo small i felt i was looking at a netbook but on a BIG screen. it was too weird!

and why can't i change my font in here? i used to be able to a couple of days ago

I have the exact same question.

I will test the game out on my Inspiron 1520 which has the 8600M GT...It scores about 3500 points in 3dmark2006 so I'll post up how it plays it. This should give you a good idea on performance as it should be quite a bit faster.

I preordered through steam so the Beta when released (tonight or tomorrow) will be downloading ASAP and I will give it a shot.

I am in the same boat as you that I wish to "upgrade", but at the same time downgrade the size as I realized I no longer need a laptop the size that I currently have and a smaller one would be much better suited. I won't be ordering though if the 330M doesn't "game" well enough for me as I would like the availability to take it state-to-state and be able to LAN with friends at medium settings at the least...not talking about 16x9 resolution of course because that would be highly unlikely on any new games.

you can play the beta if u preorder on steam. if someone with the 330m version will go to http://www.yougamers.com/ and test the system requirements of bc2 and see what it says.

i will hopefully have mine within an hour so ill do it and check back later.

Those "system testers" online are very inaccurate and should not be used by any means to judge a system. The only accurate ways to test a system are tried and true benchmarking with games and applications.

oh okay, well either way i think that it will run that game on lowwwww. i compared benchmarks with the minimum gpu required(for bc2) to the 330m i don't remember the figures but i think they were close. but who knows if that means anything

It's not that the lower resolution determines what myself and others are questioning so much but more of the fact that the viewing angles of the previous CW's which only had the 1366 x 768 panel were quite poor, and are wondering if the panel of the 1600 x 900 CW has a wider viewing angle before it becomes washed out.

As I stated in a previous post, a 14 inch screen should be able to have two people sitting side by side view the screen without the significant amount of wash out the first generation CW's exhibited. I saw a few first generation CW's with that 1366 x 768 and at the slightest bit of side viewing created washout, where as the SR series notebook panels with the ( lesser resolution ? ) 1280 x 800 screen were bright with very minimal washout even at extreme and unrealistic viewing angles.

So basically it's not the resolution question per say but perhaps the 1600 x 900 screen is of different quality than the 1366 x 768. Thanks everyone for your patience.

Don't worry, the 1600 x 900 resolution on the 14 inch screen will be fine. Viewing the blu ray movies on the 1600 x 900 screen will be fantastic.

Ok there are lots of concerns about the viewing angles of the new Sony LCD panels.

Now most laptop makers are pushing LED backlight panels over the older CFL backlight panels because it uses less energy. Since this trend is rather young many of the new LCD backlight panels (not just Sony) have less than optimum viewing angles.

Now I can say that my 1600x900 panel has a good viewing angle up to right around 40-45 degrees before it starts dropping off which enables me and my wife to sit next to each other and play wheel of fortune without any problems.

There are laptops with better screens out there but I can compare my Sony to an Asus ul30vt or ul80vt series and the Sony screen is a hundred time over better than either of those two models of Asus laptops (which both by the way are led backlight).

thats what i'm thinkin'....it was prolly put in that model to be utilized with the Blu Ray but i dint want that component because i was concerned if the Blu Ray malfunctioned (as i read in a lot of posts that it wasn't meeting ppl's expectations) then it would ruin my enjoyment of the computer. But now i am thinking (from sooooooooooooo many negative posts (not here, in the Sony Vaio Z Series) i've read about having the 1600x900 on 14" that in a lot of screens and also on the browser- (which is what i mostly do with a computer) that it can be awfully tiny-

And yes i know i can adjust it and play with it, but i think i'm going to be constantly fiddling with it and driving myself (and everyone within a stone's throw of my screen) crazy, so i'm pret-ty close to refusing the delivery of it- (sigh)

whats that mean "LED Backlit"? as opposed to?

If you want to know what the 330m can do, just check out the benchmarks on the 230m.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-230M.17646.0.html

Judging from numbers from the above link, I would say that the website screwed up on the 330m numbers. If the numbers are right, the 330m would be twice as slow as the 220m, which, if you think about it, is very unlikely. If the 230M can play MW2 on high @ 28.5fps, chances are that the 330m will definitely be able to run bc2.

edit: nvm, the 230m was benched using 05 while 330m with 06.

I have the Sony CW Best Buy model with blu ray. The model number is

optiarc bd rom bc-5500 h on the sony blu ray/dvd/cd burner

It's got the either software (comes with Corel Win DVD). My DVD playback (with the dark knight plays like normal without the excess optical rom noise).

But the blu ray (both the suggogate and michael jackson this is it blu ray) both make small constant grinding noises. What gives?

The Blu ray sounds like a diesel engine running from a car (although much softer). But it's a weird constant noise while the blu ray movies run.

Again, DVD's/CD's play fine with very no small grinding noise. I installed a trial version of Cyberpower DVD and it makes the similiar noise.

Is this a firmware issue with this blu ray? I don't think anything major is going on. It's just the excessive noise from blu ray playback.

I think its happening to a lot of Blu Ray configured models:Here's one fix one guy tried:

"I managed to fix the buzzing sound by doing this:
Recording Devices>Right-Click Microphone>Properties>Listen>Check "listen to this device">"Playback Through this device" set to digital output"

Hey guys, it is driving me nuts, I cannot find any info if this VPCCW27FX/B available in BestBuy has glossy or matte screen? (talking here about 1600 x 900 screen)

The only thing I see that the body color is glossy black, but I really care if the screen is matte, cannot stand those glossy screens.
I would really appreciate if someone could clarify this!
    Thanks in advance :)

I understand that it's matte and all, but...why would you buy that for $899? You get i5 + better screen + better gpu for the same price. I like matte too, but to pay a super premium for a paint job is...kind of lame.

I ordered the icy white model from Best Buy today. It will arrive next month. NewEgg is charging about $90 more including shipping. Good deal! Can anyone comment on its color and build quality? I read the white color is a pearly shade. I haven't read anything about keyboard or chassis flex though..

I will get Sony's 1-year warranty service, correct?

You can change the DPI to increase the font size I believe.

Also, the previous version of backlighting is CCFL ( Cold cathode fluorescent lamp) See: http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_cathode

Do you mind running it at either 1366x768 or if you don't have that option at 1280x720? I want to know how it compares to M11x vids I saw of it running SFIV, although not a benchmark but during gameplay showed some avg FPS. Just curious. Would appreciate it greatly! Thanks ahead.

Called up UK customer service cos I got an email saying my CW would be shipped to me between 29/01 - 03/02. Apparently that is a deceptive message - that just gives a data when the notebook might be shipped from JAPAN(?!!) and that I'll get another email with a tracking ID which is when I'll get to know when the laptops gonna get to my hands(by now, if at all...). This is just stupidity... arent customer service messages not meant to trigger too many questions? :(

So I'm still perplexed about my blu ray noise issue. It's still the "humming/diesel sounds" coming from the blu ray drive. What's interesting is that it's only the blu ray movies that are causing this noise. I've tried to used powerdvd and it still causes noise.

The regular dvd movies and cd-rom use of my CW makes almost no noise.

    I found this older link:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=340136&highlight=blu+ray+noise

So is blu ray noise a common problem with laptop? I need to know if I want to take it in for an exchange.
