edit: figured it out.

 

I got the CW that came with XP-Pro downgrade AND GT230m (initially they had a small batch of these), and I did give Windows 7 a chance...However I was quite dissatisfied. Why bother with virtual machine when I can run everything on XP? I have no programs, and probably won't for a few years that run exculsively on Windows 7...so I downgraded immediately with the supplied CDs and the thing now runs like a gem.

 

this is the one my DH ordered me. Did you update the stuff it comes with? Dh orderred mine with bigger hard drive and better processor and stuff. How do you like it besides the video? Was you able to find out why it wouldnt let you use it in full screen? Also how long did it take you to get the laptop from the time you ordered it until you got it? mine is still showing ship date of th 9th BlAH lol

 

Anyone else notice that it seems like the 2 finger back and forward gesters don't work with having a couple Firefox windows/tabs open? Its like it only works on the first 1-3 windows that are opened then wont on the others. Guess ill try and download the drivers from online....

 

It's a discontinued desk by Ikea. I thought it was a jerker, but I guess I am mistaken.

Also, thanks for the pics and showing your disassembly. I will probably be ordering this laptop when I get the last $200. Being broke college kid sucks.

 

Virtual machine also has severe limitations...much better to use VMWare if you are having issues with XP in Win7 though I've found Win7's XP compatibility to be pretty good.

 

Well it is from Ikea Its like 6 years old now...Awesome desk I can change the height of all everything on it.

I am overclocking the GT 330M, but the driver is resetting at anything higher than 550/760/1150. I have not fined tuned to figure which is the cause yet...but I have not seen a single C higher than the stock clocks! WOW! I assume the core is probably topping out. Is it bad to overclock the shaders far out from the core?

 

Yeah, that desk is called the Ikea Jerker; it is a VERY sought after desk by computer enthusiasts. It is probably one of the best desks ever made, due to it's extreme customization and durability. But, it is also discontinued, they are pretty hard to find. The people that have them usually do not want to get rid of them. haha

Definitely envious now.

 

I'll remember not to throw it in the trash once I am done with it then LOL!

I really hoped that earlier someone would have done what you did/will do. It would've helped when I was going crazy trying to decide which laptop to finally pull the trigger on.

But I already have a CW27 on its way to me. All I hope for is no problems! Software I can handle (probably), but hardware screw-ups suck! I wouldn't mind the viewing angles so much.

PS - Where's the heatsinK for the CPU? Did I miss it in the photos?

 

Well, I saw the ASUS laptops on xotic and as customizable, so I thought they were good and set on preorder.

Also, some variant of them are on Amazon as preorder.

 

I had never heard of Squaretrade before; are they legit? A cursory google finds good reviews...

My thought is if a 3yr is only $129 and a new battery for these laptops runs close to $200 it's well worth it. IF they cover battery capacity loss, which they may not since it's not really a defect but rather an expected thing over time.

This is a good question, I prodded around for a little while and even disabled Avast (Real-time scanning), I think it's something along the lines of indexing. The system indexes while idle. Correct me if I'm wrong, somebody.

 

Wow! Looks like I got lucky with at least one thing so far. The CW27 at Best Buy is now on backorder.

I ordered just 2 days ago. I guess I grabbed one of the last from the batch, hopefully not a bad batch.

 

No such thing as a bad batch. Recent power problems seem to be a result of Windows 7 not playing nice with some OEM's BIOS.

 

I got mine at the sony style retail store in NY.
I couldn't wait anymore because when I looked online it was backordered.

If you have a sony style store near you why don't you check it out because they carry all the pre-configured notebooks and singnature collections and if you see one, cancel the one you made online.

The HD video on youtube is better now. Just updated flash and some windows recommended updates and when I tred again, it is working perfectly now.
One problem though, I also experience the battery drain when in sleep/hibernate mode. Its not really that bad but if sony would give some BIOS updates regarding the battery issue, this laptop is THE BEST. I have no regrets even if I got the pink and printed one. Its super fast and no complaints!

 

I just got my CW27 yesterday. Does anyone know if this will bitstream the HD audio codecs via HDMI? I have an older PS3 that sends lossless audio via PCM, and I use this for my Blu Ray player, but was curious if the CW27 would do it via bitsream.

Update as of this morning. Idle temperatures compared to before have dropped 1c and full load by 4c. I'm sure it should drop another 1-3c in the next few days. Perfect

Hey, just got my replacement CW core i5 (the one at bestbuy.com) and just wanted to let everyone know that the blu ray noise on this new laptop is almost none.

The previous CW I purchased 2 weeks ago had excessive blu ray noise humming noise. That's why I returned it. It didn't feel normal and I noticed some other people posted they had similar humming noise from blu ray also.

But my new CW is now perfect. No more noisy blu ray drive! I am 100% happy with this laptop. Too bad my wife is about to take it from me since I also ordered the new 27 inch iMac core i7 from Apple. I can't believe I just spent $2500 on the iMac and another $1000 on this Sony CW. At least I can write it off on my business. I just love computers. I buy one every 2 years and resell my old ones.

yesterday i bought cw26fg/b from sony exclusive store in bangalore-india.
here it cost arount 1200$ (56000Rs).it's really good and even it's lcd is better than cw16. the only thing is that yesterday I forgot to check every parts of body.
after I brought it to my home I found that below the space buttom and touch pad there is a few overhang(frame between space key and touch pad came up). will it cause any problem in the future in case of keyboard farme?

 

My new CW26 has intel advanced -N 6200 wireless adaptor.
Before i buy this laptop I read in this thread that it has Atheros wireless card and I called to sony customer care usa about that. they told me it has atheros. but In india it has intel 6200 advanced-n.
I study here and vaio laptops are more expensive than other places. I paid 1215$.

totaly I paid 1215$ (56000rupee). I do not know that the keyboard skins available or not but the only thing that disapointed me is the keyboard skins.
everything is good.
my hdd score in windows 7 is: 5.8 whitout re-partitioning. right now I did not uninstall any program but i will uninstal mcaffe and all trial software and will install kaspersky internet security 2010.

Some reccomended things with CW26/equivalent models:

1. Get the GPU overclocked if you take gaming on this machine seriously.

2. Run the de-crapifyer to improve on boot timings.

3. Install the 'Scrybe' utility drivers from synaptics site, totally worth it.

it wasn't too bad but the webcam loose frames when you record a video game it look a lot better in person. but yeah if your going to play just leave it at high settings. but very high look so good. if this laptop wasn't for my niece I would overclock it for video games.

what fps are u gettnig on high settings? high settings for me weren't exactly playable

 

Does anyone know how to backup/export the power settings for Windows 7?

I just went through all the little things and I don't want to spend another 30 minutes re-tweeking everything should Sony/Windows program want to put things back the factory way....

For that matter, is there some thing out there that backups all these Windows settings to some file that can be imported back?

Hello, all! Newbie here. I've been using my CW27 for about a week now and I just got the blue screen of death and then automatically shut down... I was simply adjusting the color themes. Any ideas on why this happened? Do I need to install a driver update or run any diagnostic tools or is this a defective unit? As far as I can tell, all updates have been installed (both windows & vaio) I can still return to BB if you think that is the best option. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

 

Can our CWs use the power adapter of a Z? The plugs are the same and they can be plugged into both the CW and the Z, but I dont have the gut to plug it into the wall..

Both of the power adapters are 19.5V, the CW says VGP-AC19V41, and the Z says VGP-AC19V26.

Hello, just wanted to get the word out on the KEYBOARD SKIN for the CW. The skin I have is black, was shipped to me about a month and a half ago. After very moderate use, the arrow key portion is starting to go bad, tearing on the "left" key and in between the "up" and "down" keys. Tried to tape it from the back, but the surface is way too slippery. Tried on the front, but not very comfortable. Any ideas what material I should use for a patch...?

Overall not liking that I paid $26 for this.

 

You should have warrenty maybe they can send you new stickers or you can buy from any online shop a sticker pad and use only the arrow keys

I want to know that all hdd for laptops are sata 150 or not?
because I checked my cw26 and saw that it is sata150.
And I found that there is no problem with keyboard skins(earlier I sent a post about it) because all cw series has same issue .

Ya, as Dr.Blaze already said, all the hdds are sata 150.
In india, where did you find the keyboard skin and for how much? cause i chkd the sony vaio india site and its not listed here.............

 

Using the power adapter for z series is not recommended, because even if the voltage ratings are the same, the current and hence obv power ratings must also match.............am no expert on this though. If the warranty covers battery damages then you may still try it out.

what is the ram wei score all the others are getting? i just get a 5.9 and thot that it should be higher as these are ddr3 chips @1066MHz........obv 1333MHz r better but can these chips be used to perform better sumhow by some changes?

 

Just installed KUBUNTU on my cw26 alongwith windows 7 and its working fine and stable.......next stop is a Hackintosh install ...........ne advice guys?

 

As I said I took mistake because I thought that it has problem but it does not.
And I think it's (key skin)not available in India.
