Hi ! I'm back about my VAIO SE screen problem.

Last year I noticed that there was 6 white spots that had begun to appear on my LCD screen. I could see the spots very clearly especially on white backgrounds.

I found out later that the "VAIO" logo is responsible for these tasks. Indeed I think the logo creates excessive pressure on the LCD panel :

Sony has already replaced my LCD panel once, and since few months the problem is back (for now, just two spots) :/

Have you ever see that (on VAIO SE or other)?

Yes, I noticed these spots for the past month. I thought it was the keyboard, but now that I see this post, it makes sense that the white dots match the points of the logo. I've had this laptop since May, and the white dots seem to be growing stronger. Its good to know that sony replaced your screen. I wonder if I could get the local sony repair shop to switch the screen for me too before my warranty expires.

    Hello everyone!

I have a Vaio VPC SE2C5E and yesterday I faced two problems:

    1. My keyboard backlight has suddenly stopped working.

No new software were recently installed or any settings changed. I use preinstalled windows 7. Backlight is on in the Vaio Control center (I’ve never opened Vaio Control center until this had happened), I tried to change settings several times – nothing happened.

I restored my system from a week-old backup – didn’t help. Reinstalled keyboard driver, updated BIOS – nothing.

But I still think it might be software problem because of the another issue that happened at the same time.

    2. The power button is not glowing green as it usually does. I want to explain this point:

At first it stopped glowing as keyboard backlight. But I noticed that it shortly blinks (much dimmer than it usually does) when I turn on the pc. When I was playing with Vaio Control center settings I figured out the following: when I set the backlight " OFF after 10 seconds (power AC)” it doesn’t affect the keyboard backlight but It does affect the power button in a strange way. After exactly 10 seconds of non-typing, the power button start to glow (again very dim, I’d say half of normal brightness) and it stop glowing as soon as I start typing again. This repeats each 10 seconds of not touching the keyboard.

Maybe it’s a paranoia now but I think I also hear a very short but pretty loud “shhhh” sound from the laptop speakers each time at the moment of switching off. What can it be? And can it be related to my backlight problem?

I want also to ask an owner of the same pc to paste a screenshot of the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sony Corporation\VAIO Control Center\Settings\VESAutoDimmer2

I think that might clarify a bit. Please ask me if i explained the problem unclear.

Do you guys have any idea how to solve my issue?

    Thank you for your help!

Anyone disassembled an SE far enough to see if the CPU is socketed or soldered? I have a 2011 SE with an i5-2430M, and would like to bump to a i5-2540m - didn't realize the 2430m didn't have VT-d.

I suspected as much... I mean, if they solder the firs 4GB ram bank in...

Anyone else get the dock on that $50 clearance? Pretty convenient, especially for $50. Comes with a power supply, which costs more than $50 alone!

I have a SE190X and when I purchased last year, I installed a SSD and put our Win 7 x64 IT build on it. Installed all the Sony Vaio drivers/utilities from the Sony support site and everything worked like the factory build (minus all the Vaio Gate stuff that I never use).

OS finally konked out this week, so reloaded the Win 7 IT build as I did last year. Installed all the Sony drivers and utilities again, but the function keys, backlight and Smart Network applet (which I really like) don't work at all. Vaio Control Center, Easy Connect and Smart Network are all showing as installed. I also got that pesky wrong battery installed popup but just disabled the battery checker from MSConfig. No bangs in Device Manager, all devices appear to be working normally.

Going to try to re-install the Sony Utilities one more time. Any other ideas? Specifically what Sony Utilities do I have to install to get these items working?

    Thanks!!

Go to download page of your model to download and install as follow:
    Sony eSupport - VPCSE190X - Support

    1. All three in SYSTEM COMPONENTS
    2. NOTEBOOK CONTROL AND UTILITIES
You may have to remove previous installed first before install these utilities.

Ordered one from the sony outlet with a 128 GB ssd. Should be with me early next week.

Can anyone tell me how much space I will have after Windows and sony bloatware that comes pre installed? I would be happy with minimum 80 GB.

And what brand of SSDs do sony ship with their laptops? I hope it is not some POS.

The screen that was in my Vaio was an LG Display - LP156WF4 (SL)(B1)

It's currently broken and I've been meaning to replace for a few months. I've noticed on Ebay I can pickup the exact same model, or others ending (B2) / (B3). I really want to try and rid of Orangegate issues, does anyone know first of all if the later revisions are compatible/fix the issue, and secondly is there any other panels I can install instead?

    Thanks

So I have a VPCSE190X with i7 Sandy and latest Sony firmware. I have searched other VAIO threads and read that other have experienced battery drain issues. This is when the battery drains when the laptop is shutdown or in hibernation mode.

In my case, when my laptop is shutdown and unplugged (@ 100% battery) and left overnight, it boots back up with <50% battery life remaining. The health of this battery is still rated as "good" per the VAIO utility. I've been having this issue since I first purchased the laptop from the Sony outlet store back in October. I've even tried this with the sheet battery but that just prolongs the draining issue. (Side note, I immediately slapped a SSD in the ODD slot and modified the bezel --- figured I couldn't return the item to Sony).

I can feel that the underside (not the battery area) is warm despite being shutdown. Is anyone else on this thread experiencing this issue? This effectively turns my laptop into a short-range desktop. I've tried installing on Win7 and Win8 (current) and the same issues exist. Looking for a fix if someone can help. TIA

    Hello,

    I have the SE2X9E/B model.
I'm looking forward do replace my optical drive with an SSD Caddy.
I know that a USA company sells a specific caddy for the Vaio SE model but with shipping to Europe gets very expensive...

I'm now considering Icy Box IB-AC642 as an alternative caddy but i don't really now how this will fit in my Vaio... has anyone tested this caddy?

    Thanks.

Hi, I got this one and it works ok, not sure if it is the same for SE2 but I'd say so. They say in the description "The Universal SATA-to-SATA Caddy is compatible with laptops that has a 9.5mm-thick / high optical bay with a SATA interface."

Second 2nd HD HDD Hard Drive Caddy bay for Sony Vaio SE1 Series 9.5mm Sata | eBay

Could you please have a look on my post just above...I wonder if you could send me the picture or at least the part number of your HDD cable? In case you have standard 2.5" drive. Thanks a lot

How does this fit close into your Vaio? Does it leave a gap? Can you send a close up picture?

For those of you with an SE1 that you upgraded to Windows 8, have you been able to install the "Ricoh® Camera Firmware Update?" When I attempt to install it, it appears to have installed correctly, but in the Device Manager the webcam driver is still listed as being provided by Microsoft with a Driver Date of 6/21/2006.

This is of concern to me because I'm trying to fix an issue with the webcam where frequently when I wake my laptop from sleep I get an alert that a USB device has failed, and I see in the Device Manager an error for the webcam.

    Thanks!

Guys, is there seriously no one who has VPCSE2 laptop with standard 2.5" HDD to send me the picture or part number of their cable?

I am stuck with 1.8" 128GB SDD and Sony is refusing to give me that part number. This is my last Sony laptop - because of their anoyingly useless service

    Hi,

I have a VPCSE13FX, and a few days ago my keyboard backlight stopped working. I think the problem started after a recent windows update for 8 64bit. Anybody experiencing the same thing?

The power button doesn't light up either, but the Caps and num lock do.

From what I remember, the Caps and numlock lights are on a separate cable and board shared by the left speaker. I can't remember if the power button was attached to the keyboard or to the right speaker.

There was also 2 cables connected to the keyboard, but I think one of them was for the card reader. I believe backlight power is on the same cable as the keyboard buttons. So probably not from a loose cable.

You are not alone in this issue, has been plaguing me for months. I sent the unit back to Sony but they claimed nothing was wrong. Personally I think it's a hardware problem along with the white marks on my screen in the shape of VAIO - which also Sony refused to acknowledge was their fault.

I haven't upgraded to Win8 but instead I made a clean install, and result is that my camera is not working. Recently I was able to make it working but only after OS is rebooted. And this only works when "fast startup" is disabled, so windows 8 will make a full restart(both system and client sessions are restarted). As I like to hibernate or sleep my computer, most of the time my camera is not functional. When I want it to work, I have to reboot. Impractical, but so far only way how to make it work unless I want to downgrade back to win7. Hope it helps some of you. On the other hand, I have a question too. Is there someone with VAIO SE with windows 7 or 8 with dual external displays working? I know its possible in Ubuntu, but in windows this is somehow not working.

    Hi darxide_sorcerer
Since you have some insight, I want to ask whether you know about any way how to enable dual external displays for Sony S series notebooks? My model is SE2F1E, and it doesnt work with neither GPU in notebook(AMD and Intel). There is a hardware switch on notebook, and obviously Sony has played with driver a bit. As far as I know and have seen, dual external displays work in Ubuntu. So hardware should be ok.

    With regards

i have not tried that, unfortunately. i have, however, seen a recent post (in the last two months or so) by someone who had that functionality working on Windows, but i can't remember more details about it (which thread, the name of the OP, etc.). maybe doing a search would reveal it.

    Hello everyone,

Actually I've posted on thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/641671-sony-vaio-sa-sb-sc-se-advanced-menu-bios-hack-30.html

However I think here is more possible for a favor

Hello, i got a bricked bios after unawear action of disable the intel gpu. I intend to reflash the current bios without exchange a new one as kruegsch on post #48 did. My vaio model is vpcse2fmy. Could any one give me a full workable dump file for bios? can i download the file from sony suport website or use Pyr0's advance menu hack file instead?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi wolek76

Thank you for replying. Refer to both model features, i can't see the diff but only cpu speed. I think it should work. Pls help me by your dump. I need a chance to try for my bricked bios. :)
