just a small update about my Z11-SSD-problem (after a blackscreen one ssd jumped out of the quad-raid, bam, data gone... happened twice in 3 months!)
sony (europe) picked the z11 up at october 6th via ups. the guy from service call center told me it'll take from 5 up to 10 days. all good so far (but a long time without my vaio... grrr). at october 18th i got little worried, because i got no text message, no email, nothing, so i called them again. the woman said that the vaio entered service at october 12th (wow, 6 days from germany to belgium) and that there's some delay right now in processing, so it may take some more days to repair / exchange the ssds.
about the problem that i didn't get any email at all she said it might be a problem with the "system" and she's gonna look for that. well, as of today, october 25th, i didn't get any email, any text message, about my vaio being repaired, shipped back, or anything else.
it's nice to pay 2500€ to be almost one month "out of laptop".... isn't it?

Sorry to hear about your situation.. I think Raid 0 can be very dangerous to use without backing up your data periodically. I always learn my lesson after losing data and can sympathize with you. With all the stories of Raid 0 crashes I don't leave anything on my 256 Raid other than programs and files that are already backed up. It also makes it easy for me to restore to factory every so often without much moving around of files to ensure a speedy system. From my experience with Sony the service reps will almost always tell you what you want to hear, but once in their hands things seem to change a bit. I would keep in touch with them and make sure you take names and keep track of when and where you called if possible. Also i heard of incidents where running with write-back cache can increase your risk of drive failure if forced or having to hard reset. Even though there are speed benefits, the risk is very high. I hope your laptop gets a speedy recovery.

I'm so sick of the screen going out randomly. Anyone else having this problem? Do they have a solution for it yet?
-
Do you mean the black screen of death while watching video's or the computer waking up from sleep to a black screen? I've never had the screen go blank while working on the notebook before. The other two things i listed can be fixed with updates and know hows.
-
In the "Vaio Control Center" under "Keyboard and Mouse" you have settings under "Backlit KB"
-
Sometimes the screen goes black just when I close the lid and open it again (I have the power set to do nothing when the lid closes, so the screen is only really turning off when I do that). Other times the screen just goes black randomly. How do you fix the issues you stated?
-
First Time Post!
I have read this forum and the Vaio parts in particular for a week and still do not understand the "owners lounge" thingy and why threads has to be so HUGE!
Anyway here's my issues (please correct/rebutt me if I'm out of line):
1. Does anyone know of any software/utility with witch you can read the fan speed (throttle) of the VPCZ1? Even better, control it? When I had a mischievous SZ61 I succeeded at making NHC (old .net hardware util) both read and control the fan, it entailed a lot of trial and error though.
The reason I'm asking is that "thermal control strategy" switching does not seem to do anything with the sound/speed of the fan on this one. That might be because it is mostly at its lowest speed since the laptop is a monster
But my Z21 (not VPC, you know, the previous Z-line) expressed a lot of difference when switching.
1.5. Do your Z1's ever shut down the fan completely? The Z21 did and I would have hoped/thought that the Z1 (having SSD) would too, but it never does. Assuming of course low utilization and custom power options.
2. Someone asked about the AC Adaptor being the same as for earlier models, since the threading practices of these forums goes beyond my scope I'll just humbly say that My SZ4?, SZ61, Z21 and Z12 all have exactly the same 19.5V adaptor though the one that came with the SZ4 was bigger (they were back then).
3. I am experiencing freezes and strange problems with hybrid graphics switching especially when coming back from sleep and especially when changing something significant *during* sleep (like plugging in/out the AC or the HDMI). I have seen/read others expressing similar woes and concerns. What I can add is that all my vaios with hybrid graphics had similar problems! After a couple of months when refreshes came out and my models drivers where updated these problems usually went away. What is decisively much nicer with the Z1 and SSD is that when freezes happen and/or the event services stops working (like auto brightness stops working or it's impossible to change brightness) restarting windows is soooo fast on this one (not that you ever should have to).
What I mean to say is that if you are just an a-type personality and not an aaa-type you might as well live with these things and in my experience updated (sony official) drivers, bios updates and such will fix the problems.
So... thats what I have to say and ask.
Lets, all us lucky owners keep *enjoying* this fantastic machine! And once in a while laugh at all those proud mac-evangelists out there
Regards,
/Dany -
How old is your Z11? Do you have Toshiba or Samsung SSD?
Write-Back cache on the RAID increases the write speed but adds an additional risk for data loss when the system crashes or power issues.
Always backup your data you don't want to loose! -
Oh, forgot this.
4. Anyone found a way to reprogram the *other* two S-buttons? On my model they are called "ASSIST" and "VAIO". I would love to be able to assign one of the choices available for the middle button (Vaio Control Center, Special Buttons) to these two button also.
Regards and TIA,
/D -
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
1) i don't know of any software, sorry. I use CPUID to tell me my temps... but that's about it...
1.5) no, the fan never completely turns off... but in stamina... i usually have to try and hear the fan or else i wont notice it.
3) what do you mean by freezes and strange problems? Which model VPCZ do you have Z11, Z12, or Z13? The Z11 and Z12 should use the new video drivers out on the Z13 support page. If you've got a Z13, then i dont really have a clue sorry.
4) This has been a recurring topic, and AFAIK (i've read through all the posts in Part 1 of this thread as well as the current part 2) no one has been able to map the other two keys to trigger something else. However, the VAIO key opens up the Vaio Media center, and since i uninstalled that, that key now maps to mute... so i guess if you new where that is programmed... you might be able to map it to something else.
The assist key however might be different, if i remember correctly, you can press it on boot up and it will help you run diagnostic tests or boot from your recovery partition or something like that. which means it's probably programmed into the bios? Someone correct me if i'm wrong. -

Hi guys..
Sorry for my silly question..can my Z play games like Call of Duty, Far Cry and Crysis?
I go to this website:
Can You Run It?
and it said that my video card is not support. As i know, GeForce GT330M is one of the latest of graphic. Or I can play games with medium settings?Attached Files:

Bought the Z11 in directly may when it came out, so one of the first models...
Not sure about the SSD though. But good news today, called the Sony Service again, now they even gave me a repair number and wanted to conncet me to the service center so i could talk to them to see what's going on with my vaio, but then the call was dropped with something like "due to unforseen circumstances... bla bla" *beeeeep* - well, that worked great. afterwards i used the contact form on the website and told them how the support... sorry... 'sucks', and after just 20 minutes i got an email back that my sony left the repair center yesterday and should arrive within two or three days from Belgium.
Let's see if they located & fixed the problem... i'll keep you updated in case anyone else has this problem ever again.
by the way: i make backup images every few days and always store the important data on my pc, on my external 16TB NAS and on different mobile HDs, but once in a while you are on a job on a location where there's no time to backup data, and if it happens especially THEN (which it did in my case, twice!!) it's really hard to blame the backup process
-
Has anyone tried to change his palmrest? I would intend to do so, but I fear that after a few months the problem from happening again ...

Hello everyone,
I'm about to buy a cto Z13 (US model) but i haven't read anywhere about if the 256GB is still a quad or a dual SSD.. I'm confused because it's listed as 2x128GB, so it should(?) be a quad..or not? -
Don't worry about that, the Z can handle all the games you asked for very well, as a matter of fact I have them all installed and they play wonderful.
There might be a glitch with (Can you run it website) that cannot tell that the GT330 is the bottle neck, well its not, its actually one of the best GFX cards on a laptop this size. So, always check other HW through CURI, forget about the gfx, they should fix this soon though.
I have these:
1. COD 6 Modernwarfare 2
2. Far Cry 2
3. Crysis warheads
they all play awesome -
I think there was a bios update that addresses the black screen of death while watching videos and may even resolve issue's your having now. I'm not sure of the version since i can't find it on the Vaio support site but I'm sure you can update it using the Vaio care application. I would also set the laptop to resume from sleep when opening lid in Vaio control center under power management/Lid action settings. The other issue i was having was resuming from sleep after coming from XP since i have a dual boot setup, and your laptop isn't resuming from or going into sleep mode this issue might be isolated to my laptop only. and last i would try the new video drivers for the Z13 to see if that helps. Otherwise you will need to determine if this is software only and not hardware related, requiring a service repair.

Maybe your switch was on Stamina (or auto, running on batteries) at the time you went on?

Nah, that utility has issues with the 335m in my laptop, too. When I had a m11xR1, I ran it in discrete (IGP disabled at BIOS level), and it still had issues with the 335m. It had issues with detecting Windows 7 for a while, too...
-
so what do you guys think of this comparison with the Macbook Air?
Seems pretty stupid to me.
MacBook Air fastboot goes head-to-head with Sony VAIO Z [Video] - SlashGear -
well, you gotta protect it from contracting VDs..
-
something was wrong with their Z, mine doesn't take that long to either cold boot or resume from sleep, and it's the lowest end model.
-
I believe that the comparison is a bit biased towards the MB Air. I'm sure that the 15'' outcome of the MBA cannot be beat, but the 40'' for the Z is unfair, since this doesn't refer to fresh clean installs, the bios raid screen is on (which consumes a few more sec's) and I'm sure there will be a few more twicks to apply to make the Z's boot faster. A well tuned Z can boot in about 30'', I would say.
As the first comment on the page says I'm sure that the 15'' difference will make the MB users so much more productive!
-
Hmmm So just how long will the battery on a Z12/13 last in sleep mode?
Cz for me the "instant on" is extremely attractive.
Mind you, my maxed out Z13 is on order, moved from Factory to Logistics last night, yet I am still considering an 11" MB as a 2nd machine.... -
I don't know, I think it's about right. I time my Z at about 20 sec, but that's because I start AFTER post, when Windows starts to boot.
Because the Z has the raid 0 drives, there is a bit of setup time to get those ready to go.
Of course one thing their simple benchmark leaves out is how much speed there is AFTER the 15/40 sec boot times. The Raid 0 drives (as well as the Core i5/i7) ought to show their respective run-time advantages. -
First off, thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
When working in normal environments I too can barely hear it. When using it to read stuff late in the night and the fan goes in a low throttle theres a buzzing from it. That's why I wanted to know the speed to perhaps be able to decide if this is "normal". Anyway, the fan is very quiet and especially the high-revelation sound isn't IMHO annoying at all.
Happened once today. The computer was in speed mode and i put it to sleep. Then waking it up on battery and it failed to switch and froze instead (or perhaps it was the other way around). A freeze (I have seen someone else here "report it") in this case the screen shows what was on and the mouse pointer is still. Everything is completely unresponsive. A cold-boot is the only way out. But I suspect that will be better with newer drivers. It is an Z12Z9E so it has the FHD screen, 8MB an European Samsung SSD (4*64MB), Goobi card and an optical unit. No GPS. I'll try the Z13 drivers as you suggest (I held that back because someone reported a higher GPU tempature when using those drivers on the Z12).I uninstalled all bloatware first thing so my "VAIO"-button also goes to mute but thats moot since Fn+F2 is mute already
. Anyway, perhaps I'll try to hack it when getting inspired some day!
Thanks again,
/Dany -
btw, I have a question...
The VPCZ138GW/XQ from asia is equivalent to which model here in the US?
Specs below:
The price according to today's currency exchange rate is $2883.11 US dollars. -
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
I saw that but didn't think enough of it
If say I boot DOS 3.3 on my Z, and it loads in 5 seconds, do I say it's better than the MBA? What am I really comparing? Do I care about the kinds of applications running and how long they take to run? I think the reviewer's just being silly...

Think Zagg Invisishield, Clear protector, the stuff you put on your cellphone. There's a few threads on it. I think Willy said he went to a car autoshop and they measured and cut out some 3M car protector material for him for like $10 or so. Zoinks bought some 3M protector too and cut it out himself. It's up to you, but it stand to show that "where there's a will, there's a way"
You've got a VPCZ12, so the "latest" official video drivers are actually on the VPCZ1390X series support site. Go to Sony eSupport and type that in for your model and look for the drivers then update them. OR, you can follow the new graphics driver thread in the Sony forum and test out the newest drivers that the community has put together.
The Gobi card is a global GSM/CDMA card WITH a GPS... you can unlock it by downloading the drivers from the european site... the american drivers lock it to Verizon.
There's no preconfig model in the US with those specs... but from the CTO... i get $2800 for that configuration (w/ a silver lid, carbon fiber is $50 more)... also consider the tax rate. -
On the Canadian Sony Style site, that configuration works out to be $2356.99 in either black or silver. Add $50 for Prem Carbon Fiber or Glossy Prem Carbon Fiber.

. My Disk Transfer rate used to be 7.9 but has since fell to 7.6 (maybe it's cuz now i've got about half my drive filled, versus stock capacity or maybe Windows changed the WEI test), but it's fine, WEI is sort of a guideline, gives you a ballpark figure.

Who knows. Maybe demand is lower, therefore, we get a lower price. Usual supply & demand. The recent Z12 CTO sale where the base price was $1090 netted a mere 160 to 200 orders Canada-wide.twe90kid said: ↑wait, why is ti so much cheaper in canada?Click to expand...
The US has more people with more money willing to spend on a premium laptop so Sony will charge more.
Just my take anyways. -
Quick question all... what are your favorite programs to use the built in camera on the Z? Are there any that are already installed, or are there other versions that are better? I've never used the camera, and right now don't even have the first clue on how to activate it. Thanks everyone!
-
For some reason, any upgrades to the Z are way cheaper in Canada... and we have different colour options too.twe90kid said: ↑wait, why is ti so much cheaper in canada?Click to expand...
e.g. upgrade from 256GB to 512GB drive in U.S. is $1000 USD, whereas in Canada it's $600 CAD difference. LoL
Canadians can choose black, silver, premium carbon fibre, or glossy premium carbon fibre. U.S. can choose black, silver, or bordeaux.
It's also much cheaper for us to upgrade our RAM. However, the U.S. allows some cheaper options (128GB drive, 1600x900 screen) that are now unavailable in Canada.
Makes no sense to me, lol. -
I recently backed everything up onto an external drive using Windows backup. All my files and folders were transferred, as well as a system image. I personally have a caddy with a 640GB hard drive in my Z and store all downloaded/personal/work files on it. When I'm ready, I copy those files to a 1.5TB drive in an external enclosure manually. Doing it this way allows me to restore easily and still have access to the files in my caddy. I don't run many programs other than the ones that came with the Z. If you do, this may or may not work out better for you since you will have to reinstall those programs as well, in which case a one touch backup solution would be more beneficial. Is it possible to get the 1920x1080 screen res on my laptop instead of the 1600x900. I currently own the Z1190 with a 1600x900 screen but there are issues when closing the screen I get small rainbow colors at the bottom of screen when closing the lid, seems to be a slight connection issue.
If thry fix under warranty could they install the 1929x1080 FUllHD even if I paid extra.
Thanks.
If not how much is the high res screen 1920x1080 part for me to install it myself any idea?
Thanks.John -
I doubt they would upgrade it for you, but you could call their parts department and find out how much it is. I would hazard around $300-500. If they even have it in stock.

How re you my friend? hope all is well.
Guys:
Any one knows or have a Dual SSD (128GBx2) that I can buy for my Z?
I currently have the (64GBx2) and really really need to maintain my RAID-0 config.
No way that I buy an HDD caddy, nor I want to loose Raid-0.
So where can I get this package from? I don't even know what to write in the SEARCH field inside eBay or even Google. The only thing I regret while getting my Z was to choose 128GB over the 256GB option, I'm pulling my hair now, but just hope to find a user that wants to upgrade from 256 to 512, or a standalone SSD.
Please enlighten me guys, and if you have it for sale then let me know plz.
Part number for the (128GBx2) SSD would be so much welcomed too.
Thanks big time.
