If you go into Internet Options, then the advanced tab, you can see the option there.

According to Microsoft, if the option is ticked and / or grayed out, it's not using the GPU.

My wishlist for Version 2 of the X (if it were to ever happen) would also include a backlit keyboard, but also a beefier processor. And avoid the bloody GMA500.

To allow this without making the X any thicker, perhaps they could make the laptop slightly larger? eg 12 inch screen instead of 11 inch?

Hope they do make another one, great little computer.

    Anyone using this travel charger?

Wondering if it's really compatible with the Vaio X. Sure would save a lot of space.

Btw, the corner with the on/off switch is now bent. Yes, bent (and not dented). Dropped it (from my bed to the floor) and it got bent just like that. Sure is fragile.

The slot installed is a 6 pin pusher type of reader. It accept regular sized simcard. But the gobi2000 WWAN module installed in Chinese Xs are loaded with firmware locked to China Telecom (CDMA). In order to use WCDMA, you need to reflash its fw.

    Hi everyone,

I recently picked up a VAIO X (VPCX111KD/B) on clearance at a SonyStyle store here in Canada. I also have an F11; and faced an issue of carrying both a corporate laptop along with the F11. Anyhow, the X does a wonderful job for my purposes of surfing the web, documents, and movies on airplanes without hauling out the Thinkpad.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to keep the SSD (64GB) in good shape? This is the first computer I've owned with an SSD -- so while I know a bit of TRIM and others, what maintenance do I need to perform to keep up the speed and what not?

    TIA

Windows 7 is optimized for SSD so there aren't much u need to do. If you ever see decrease in performance on ur ssd. Use Gparted programe to reset parameters

your SSD is probably not aligned properly during format, since XP is not optimized for SSD. personally I don't see any benefit downgrade to XP from Win7 for Sony X, especially if you have SSD.

use win7 to fresh format the SSD and then install XP on freshly formated SSD.

I see it on the website, but it won't let me download it.
Do I have to delete the drivers and then go to the intel site and let it scan?

I just purchased this and received it a few days ago. It works perfectly with the Vaio X. The label on the package and on the website says that it's compatible with the Vaio P and Vaio X. It's very light and certainly takes up a lot less space than the standard charger.

I also picked up a ZipLinq retractable power cable with a monkey adapter that works for both my work ThinkPad and Vaio X for travelling.

Figure Id make a post here since I adore the x so much. Iv been watching all the videos, well just yesterday on youtube as well as previously on this laptop, umm...Im big into gaming but also buisness oriented notebooks as well. Id really enjoy taking the x to bed at night before I go to sleep and having it as a forum tool as well as email, photo sharing etc...

I was thinking a new core ULV series processor would be sweet in a machine like this if possible. MAybee a new sany bridge processor would be even more better since it has the enhanced graphics capabilities. Id also like to see a small tear down of this with some benchmarks and daily tasks in a video.

It's an Intel Atom, so not so good.
Its more for long battery life and general computing.

For those type of programs, you should look at the Z.

It's interesting that the X price has dropped by $200. Does anyone know whether a new model is coming and what it's like? Perhaps something more competitive against the latest MacBook Air.

    Comparing the OS
I got my X series almost 3 months now and it is getting slower, i mean it is slower all the way. I understand that small little machine is running atom processor.
I also get the free window xp downgrade disc when i purchased my X series.

Question is which OS runs more smooth in X series? XP or WIN 7? Anyone tested?

    Hi guys.

I bought one X135 while travelling to the US last September. In my the flight home, the LCD screen got several unrecoverable dead pixels. For almost a month I tried to buy a new screen in the internet and could only find one for sale in China, via eBay, for a huge amount in dollars...

Finally, the replacement LCD arrived yesterday. I managed to replace the screen. However, when I first turned it on, the screen was black. I noticed later that the LCD was working, but not the LED, what usually indicates an inverter fault (in fact, the broken LCD also had a problem with lighting after I first cracked the laptop open).

Does anyone knows where is the inverter on Vaio X (just don't tell me it is included in the LCD screen)? On does anyone have the maintenance guide of this unit.

Please guys, help me here! I am desperate!

    Thanks

If you downgraded to WinXP, it's possible that the SSD is not designed to run properly under WinXP without software modifications.

Does anyone know what kind of SSD is inside the VPCX135KX ?

It is likely that the SSD has no casing (just like what Apple did with the Macbook Air in order to fit into the ultra slim form factor). I wonder if it has TRIM feature to prevent performance degradation after a few months of use?

Actually, there is no inverter for LED LCD, but there is similar circuit to drive the LED which is built on LCD controller board (small long board attached to LCD panel). I can definitely be sure that there is a tiny FUSE on the motherboard that blown up and need to be replaced, since I have fixed many Sony LED LCD for the same problem.
It requires SMT soldering skill to fix this problem. If you are not confident with this, you should get some help from a shop.

    More news on this.

Since I cannot afford being without my computer, I decided to by a cheaper (if that's even possible to say) version of the X. I managed to find a good deal here in an auction site and bought a new canadian VPCX111KD/B. The plan is to have one unit working and to get the other fixed in due time. No hurries.

I could see no differences between the VPCX135KX and this new machine besides the 64 Gb on the 111 compared to 128Gb on the 135 and the fact that there is no WWAN module on the 111. I ran everest system report home edition and it gave me no other significant differences. Does any one know if there are any other?

My first plan was to simply swap SSD drives. But then I decided to be bold (which usually leads to stupidity). And this time I managed not to break anything.

Instead, I swapped motherboards. This way, I would be able to check your information regarding the LED fuse without disassembling the whole screen on the new unit. It was no piece of cake, though. The parts are very tine and delicate and you have to be extremely careful not to break anything.

And I must say you got it right! The problem is indeed in the motherboard. The new motherboard could light up the LED on the 135 (the old computer).

The only problem (which is not a big problem, of course) I have now is that my 135 says it is a 111... :) But I plan to unswap everything when I have the other motherboard fixed...

By the way, looks like the wife will get an X111 to replace her HP pink netbook. She didn't appear so excited, though.

Thanks a lot, ngvuanh!!! And sorry for the big post.

To anyone with the VPCX135KX: How slow is the graphics when it comes to video playback? Specifically, how are:
    1) You tube at 320x200
    2) You tube at 480p
    3) You tube at 720p
    4) Hulu at 720p
    5) DivX or Xvid video at 480p
    6) x264 or h264 video at 720p

Not really sure what you're getting at... I watch HD YouTube quite often, and on longer airplane trips with the X battery, I watch BR/DVD rips of movies all the time. No issues, no lags, no problems.

Just get the right codecs and everything runs just fine. It's just video playback, you're not trying to play a high res game after all.

I've never tried connecting a Bluray drive by USB, but Media Player Classic Home Cinema (Google is your friend) will play back 720p MKV files absolutely perfectly, subtitles and all (if necessary). I've not tried with 1080p as I don't have any.

As for Youtube, all standard definition is fine, but HD is not perfectly smooth for me (skips frames time to time). And even SD video on some websites drops frames (for example, most videos in the custom flash media player at failblog.org). My X only has a 1.86Ghz processor so that's probably why.

    Hi,

    I have a VPCX111KD. It is a Canadian model.

I am trying to solve a problem with brightness button not working (also, I see no brightness control in management options in windows 7 control panel. Does anyone else also have (or had) this problem?

Edit: Sorry. Forgot to mention that the brightness control was lost after installing all windows updates and sony updates (including Sony Update 5 and other). Unfortunately, I could not keep track of the program that made me loose the control on brightness. Thanks!

As for a codec pack, I use the CCCP codec package. It's very small and efficient. I have yet to come across anything that it won't play. The built-in Windows Media player works well with all the codecs included. Here's the link: CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack

After years using Klite packs, I installed CCCP some months ago. It is really good and lite.

As per the player, it is interesting because the Classic Media Player gives me a far worse experience than the original Windows Media Player.

The VPCX135KX has an Atom processor and very low end GPU which on many netbooks result in choppy (noticeably <24 fps) video framerates.

What model Sony laptop do you have?

I went to the Sony Style Store here in NYC (Madison Ave and 56th St) to test the VPCX135KX video playback. Here are my impressions (all videos played after data is buffered, to eliminate network speed as a confounding factor):

    1) YouTube at 360p in small window: Ok - very smooth framerates
    2) YouTube at 360p in full screen: OK at ~24fps
    3) YouTube at 480p in small window: OK at ~24fps
    4) YouTube at 480p in full screen: slightly choppy at ~20-22fps
    5) YouTube at 720p in small window: slightly choppy at ~20-22fps
    6) YouTube at 720p in full screen: very choppy at ~15fps

    hi

i have a VPCX113KG. my recovery partition has been corrupted. it can still boot in recovery mode, but pops an error saying that it cannot find the recovery files.

i made an iso from my friend's copy of windows 7 home premium x86 and made a bootable usb flash disk using the win7 usb/dvd download tool.

so i used the flash disk to boot to win7 install. everything seem to be okay until the part that i have to choose to what drive should i put the os. there are no drives detected.

i searched around the net for hours, but i couldnt find any lead with my problem.

i hope i can find the solution here.

    thanks

    ive fixed my problem.

    problem scenario:
    - recovery is corrupted.
    - bios can still see my 64gb ssd.
    - windows 7 install was not able to detect any drive.

    solution:
ULTIMATE BOOT CD. google for it :)
i played a little with it, found the partitions, deleted them all. reboot. used my usb to boot to win7 installation, and the drive finally appeared!

good luck to everyone with the same problem

He says he has an X.

The GMA500 is not a "very low end GPU". It was specifically designed to playback 1080p HD video. It should have no problems doing that. If you have an X and can't, it's a software issue.

I know it's the Sony Store and you would expect them to be up to date, but don't overestimate Sony NA. Make sure it's running the version of flash that supports the GMA 500. Also, make sure "hardware acceleration" is turned on. A P or a X should have no problems playing back 1080p HD.

Any player supports "Hardware Acceleration" won't be a problem playing 1080p.
So, Youtube HD will be a problem for all of us with GMA500.

Has anyone tried the latest GMA 500 drivers 5.0.0.2030?
I am still running 8.14.10.2024 which seem to work the best so far.

Anyone interested in a review of this model or is it too late?
