    I apologize if this has been posted here before. For some reason, I cannot search, I just get back invalid query.

    I have a Japanese PGC21111N or a VPCX115ALJ with a 256GB SSD. Today, it does not recognize the SSD, I only get the Setup screen with "Hard Disk Drive: None".

    I'd like to do the following if I can, either:
    - Figure out a way to get the SSD working again or
    - Buy/replace the SSD with a new 256GB or larger

    Any hints?

    Thank you so much,
    Ray

    Guys, I've just tried XBMC (a media centre app) and found it uses DXVA2, which means perfect HD playback on our poor old GMA500s. I've tried the YouTube, Vimeo and BBC iPlayer plugins and they all work great. Full HD, just like you were playing a local file using MPC-HC. There's even a Chrome extension to instantly play YouTube videos in XBMC but I've not tried it yet:

    The chrome extension works well, it's more likely to be used when you are watching a Youtube vid on your laptop and you want to quickly send that video to your XBMC-powered TV, but it works in this scenario too.

    If the X had HDMI out, XBMC would make it an ideal little media player for travelling.

    I was reading a Russian forum and came across some guys benchmarking GMA500 drivers on their Vaio P. These were their results:

    Test 2026 2030 1.5.2 1.8
    ------------------------------------
    GDI 1506 1087 2118 1070
    D2D 1009 715 1005 1003
    OGL 276 230 318 1587

    It seems an old driver - EMGD 1.5.2 - is actually the fastest for 2D Windows work by some distance. Almost twice as fast as EMGD 1.8 or GMA 2030. The driver is long gone from the Intel website but I managed to track down a copy and upload it here: https://www.box.com/s/a1d16078aa4462cb5cba

    Jeonghun, would you consider building a Vaio X version of this driver for us? It would be ideal if you could post the settings you use so we can build future drivers without pestering you.

    Regards,
    Quiff

    (This post is about video problems)

    Hello,
    perhaps someone can help me:
    MPC HC 1.6.2.4902
    gma driver 8.14.10.2024

    symptoms: in mpc hc, i am having difficulties playing wmv files. i did NOT have these difficulties a month ago. I updated mpc hc to play m4v files. after the update, they played, but wmv files gave me a green screen in mpc hc (using EVR, which previously worked great).
    in the mpc hc faq it says, it would be a bad graphics driver. otherwise, one shold deactivate .264 in mpc hc options, which I did. then, wmv did play, however only some (newly encoded versions). fyi, in wmp, everything plays fine. somewhere, i think on the mpc hc homepage, it said, i should install/update directX INDEPENDEND of OS used. which i found strange, since obviousy it is installed already with win7. nevertheless, i installed directX from the microsoft site (web installer), and in fact it installed. during installation, all sorts of dates (like direct X 2008 etc) where show as beeing installed, which I found quite strange. But I thought, what the hell, if microsoft offers this and it installs, perhaps there is some sense behind it (well, or not...).
    well, it did not help. it did not cause damage either, i think. i still don't understand what this was all about. perhaps wasted space, and at worst this may be taking cpu/ram resources, dunno.
    back to topic, i am now stuck with a malfunctioning mpc hc and have no idea what is going on. this is particularly annoying since it has been working well and in good quality, before, in mpc hc @ evr.

    any input very much appreciated. thank you.

    hi,
    I;ve been using mpc since I only remember :)
    And I also noticed it stoped playing these wmv.

    pls open mpc-hc, go to options - INTERNAL FILTERS and uncheck WMV3(DXVA) in right collumn (you can also uncheck WMV1/2/3 - but it shouldnt have any impact)

    if above wont work there are 2 others solutions:

    1. this one can take a while (but i'm serrious about it):
    go to their support page and open a ticket - they will fix it but it needs time
    I made a ticket last year that dxva stopped working in mpc-hc on gma500 and after 4 months they fixed it! (i"m the one to take credits for this :) :) :)

    2. this may not work:
    mpc-hc and ffdshow are using the same code so when they update mpc they (most likely) update ffdshow more or less at the same time - and that is why I say IT MAY NOT WORK - because if they broke something inside one in lets say ffdshow it will be broken in mpc - that was the story with dxva for gma500.

    Anyway back to topic,at the moment I'm using latest mpc (wmv gives me green screen) but I'm using it together with OLD ffdsow - 23.nov.2011 and these wmv are working in such combination (if you use the latest one it wont work probably)
    You dont need to install ffdshow: just download it, unpack, copy to some folder and run this command:

    regsvr32 "path to ffdshow folder/ffdshow.ax"

    you can unregister it anytime by typing:

    regsvr32 /u "path to ffdshow folder/ffdshow.ax"

    now open mpc-hc go to external filters and ADD ffdshow video decoder (and in its preferences window under CODECS enable support for all wmv (3 entries set to LIBAVCODEC)
    go to internal filters and UNCHECK wmv3(dxva) in right collumn.

    that's all

    I wont be able to check this forum very often now as I will have my internet connection for maybe 10 hrs more and then again about 9th of august.

    ================
    ETA:
    just about something else:
    recently I started playing with Windows PowerShell (build in) and found out that you can very easily disable/enable LAN/WWAN (now im trying to find out how to toggle BT)
    Below is a command that lets you switch off GOBI WWAN

    (get-wmiobject cim_networkadapter:where-object {$_.name -eq "Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB Mobile Broadband Device 9225"}).disable()

    so it means we dont need any SONY (memory eating) programs at all to controll which device should work (I'm talking about replacement for smartWI or sony smartNetwork).

    I will also try to find out how to enable gps (to get the position) - there must be a way. So far there is sonyWI that works and minWi (but that one is not able to activate gps on my model)

    ==========
    ETA2:
    sorry for long post but I found how to controll display brightness with powerShell.
    So if your FN+F5/F6 doesnt work for some reason than just try this out IT IS WORKING - all you have to do is make a shortcut for that script and read how to run powerShell script first :) because it may be confusing.

    the script I found on this page:
    Windows 7 - Powershell.com
    somewhere in the middle there is a "DIM DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS" topic
    If you dont know how to check that script just follow:
    - open powershell console (start -> all programs -> accesories -> windows power shell -> windows power shell (the one without ISE at the end)
    - go to the script page and select all text up to line 47 (including this line)
    -go to power shell console and right click - that will paste the script
    -now press ENTER to close "editing mode"
    -once you get the prompt "PS blablabla>" then type one of the following:

    Get-VideoBrightness
    Get-DefaultVideoBrightness
    Set-VideoBrightness 100

    and confirm with ENTER (the last one is for setting brightness the range is from 1 to 100)

    Hope someone will finfd this useful

    After short break I have sort-of working script for adjusting brightness.
    In fact this script do adjust brightness but the problem is with powershell window which so far can only be minimized (not be hidden) after pressing ESC.

    If someone would like to try here comes the script (save it in notepad with ps1 extension, then make a shortcut to it on desktop and go to its preferences (shortcut preferences) and set a hot key for it). Now you can start this script together with windows or just later on. When its running it can be activated with the assigned hot key: then you change brightness with arrows up/down and hide (minimize) the window with ESC.
    Code:
    $level = (Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\wmi -Class WmiMonitorBrightness).level
    $keys = 27, 38, 40

    [Reflection.Assembly]::Load("UIAutomationClient, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35")
    [Reflection.Assembly]::Load("UIAutomationTypes, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35")

    function Select-Window {
    PARAM( [string]$Text="*", [switch]$Recurse,
           [System.Windows.Automation.AutomationElement]$Parent = [System.Windows.Automation.AutomationElement]::RootElement )
    PROCESS {
       if($Recurse) {
          $Parent.FindAll( "Descendants", [System.Windows.Automation.Condition]::TrueCondition ) |
          Where-Object { $_.GetCurrentPropertyValue([System.Windows.Automation.AutomationElementIdentifiers]::NameProperty)  -like $Text } |
          Add-Member -Name Window -Type ScriptProperty -Value {$this.GetCurrentPattern( [System.Windows.Automation.WindowPattern]::Pattern )} -Passthru
       } else {
          $Parent.FindAll( "Children", [System.Windows.Automation.Condition]::TrueCondition ) |
          Where-Object { $_.GetCurrentPropertyValue([System.Windows.Automation.AutomationElementIdentifiers]::NameProperty)  -like $Text }|
          Add-Member -Name Window -Type ScriptProperty -Value {$this.GetCurrentPattern( [System.Windows.Automation.WindowPattern]::Pattern )} -Passthru
       }
    }}

    function updDisplay
    	{
    	$currentBrightness = (Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\wmi -Class WmiMonitorBrightness).currentbrightness
    	for ($i=0; $i -lt $level.length; $i++) {if ($currentBrightness -eq $level[$i]) {$currentLevel = $i}}

    	clear-host
    	write-host "brightness: $($level[$($currentLevel)])"
    	write-host "     level: $($currentLevel + 1)"
    	$currentBrightness = (Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\wmi -Class WmiMonitorBrightness).currentbrightness
    	}

    updDisplay
    for (;;)
    	{
    	$key = $host.ui.rawui.readkey("noecho, includekeyup").virtualkeycode

    	if ($keys -contains $key)
    		{
    		switch ($key)
    			{
    			#arrow up
    			38
    				{
    				$currentLevel++
    				if ($currentLevel -gt $level.length - 1) {$currentLevel = $level.length - 1}
    				(Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\wmi -Class WmiMonitorBrightnessMethods).wmisetBrightness(5, $level[$currentLevel])
    				}

    			#arrow down
    			40
    				{
    				$currentLevel--
    				if ($currentLevel -lt 0) {$currentLevel = 0}
    				(Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\wmi -Class WmiMonitorBrightnessMethods).wmisetBrightness(5, $level[$currentLevel])
    				}

    			# esc
    			27
    				{
    				$powershell = select-window *pch
    				$powershell | ForEach { $_.Window.SetWindowVisualState("Minimized") }
    				}
    			}

    		updDisplay
    		}
    	}

    there are only two thing before you run the script for the first time - you need to change execution policy for powershell script on your system. To do so open power shell and type:
    set-executionpolicy remotesigned
    press ENTER and press Y
    and you need to change one line in above script:
    Code:
    $powershell = select-window *pch

    the word after asterix * - it must be the title of your powershell window (the one that appears in the top menu bar when you open powershell console - in my case it is pch because I changed it from default)

    I'm not sure if this wiill be used by someone at all but who knows :)

    Sony Vaio X (VPC115LG) LCD hinges broken - any help?

    A bit of misfortune on my side, hoping someone can help me...
    My daughter accidentally bent the LCD screen back beyond breaking point on my 3 year old (and much used, and cherished) Vaio X. Result is a computer that has a loose lcd screen, but still functioning (this message being typed on it). Does anybody have experience renewing or fixing such a problem? The Sony service people here not too interested in repairing it, and if they do, will cost a lot... Is there a service manual somewhere, or just a set of instructions that will help?

    Looks to me like the hinges were screwed into the LCD and have been pulled out, but not clear.

    Would appreciate any assistance

    hello pch!!

    thanks a lot for your input!

    In the meantime, I had already found out that it seems to work with WMV3(DXVA) disabled, glad to hear your recommend the same. However I was fearing that disabling wmv3(dxva) may lead to worse quality, but I don't know if this is true, it's just that I thought that there must be some function of this option, IF it does work. (what do you think?)

    Your remarks regarding ffdshow as well as the hint to file a ticket are also VERY helpful. Thanks!

    @broken screen:

    - here in germany, there are repair centers that are PRIVATE and independent of sony, but they co-operate with sony. they are cheaper and have great service and are quick.

    - you may want to get a used vaio x on ebay and clone your hard drive with macrium reflect to it (i recommend doing an image and using the PE environment, it's super-convenient and can also be used for great periodical full backups). it works with no issues (no problems with windows key etc). I did it when my vaio broke. as a bonus, you will have 2 batteries plus a "charging station" (your broken old vaio) and a testing system which often comes handy. try to get a little used vaio, because then you will get a newer, brighter scrren due to less wear. plus you will have 2 adapters, one for work/car/bag and one to be installed at home etc.
    i had a vaio x505 and its screen hinges broke too. i used scotch tape that i fixed to the top corners of screen and base to prevent the screen from bending
    back. looked terrible but was fine until i got the X.
    somewhere back in this thread, I posted a link to a complete disassembly/tear-down of the X, you may find this by googling the forum, or the web. ok, i found it in my bookmarks (i love opera!)

    Sony Vaio X teardown: Case without motherboard | 59 of 89

    @regarding opera, one warning, it seems like it is best to stay with 11.62 because .64 and 12.00 and 12.01 seem to cause more performance issues as they fix. at least install a portable version to test, before you upgrade your main installation. it is said that the new plugin wrapper takes ressources, and therea also seems to be instabiliby. 11.62 is SUPER stable and I love it. best opera ever. it comes with a security issue but I doubt there's a chance I will stumble upon a site that will exploit that... by the way, I never really understood if antivirus/internet security suites will actually protect you it such cases. anyone know? is it usually unnecessary to update a browser just for security reasons because a good, updated AV will protect you anyway?

    I have searched but didn't find:

    - whether the SD card reader support SDXC (i.e., 64GB and above)
    - whether the MS Duo card reader support XC format (i.e., 64GB and above)

    My X only has 64GB SSD, so I want to purchase fast flash media to extend that, ideally 64GB or 128GB cards.

    Thanks!

    Thats exactly what I was planning to do but using a simple 32gb.In my opinion it should work,soon I'm getting a 64 sdxc for my phone,when I get it I will try on my X and post how it goes.

    according to sony (see various sony websites), >32gb is not supported by the internal reader.

    still i would be interested what actually happens when one puts a 64 gb card in there.

    check out a google image search for 'sandisk cruzer fit micro usb stick' (without quotes). they seem to be available for 32 gb only, though. might change in the future though. so you can basically get
    32+32+32+32 = 128. all usb ports sealed. but nothing sticking out, at least not mentionably. there might be micro usb sticks >32 on the market already by other brands.

    Great, let us know whether it works.

    I heard somewhere that later batches of X (2010) have SDXC support, but can't find any reference to that right now...

    this is correct. that was on some sony website. however, these batches, according to sony, suppoer sdxc only through external sdxc ADAPTORS via usb.

    i have no idea if this is true, but that's what sony says.

    so nevertheless, if any of you here are doing sdxc tests, please make sure you post your purchasing date / vaio batch details.

    hint: do a permanent ebay search for a 256 gb vaio. buy it, sell yours (approx 100-180USD difference i guess), and before this simply clone your drive with macrium reflect.

    hi there,
    could be slightly off topic but I think it is worth saying:

    if you decide to reinstall your win7 from recovery partition of your X then:
    - after setting up new size(s) for new partition(s) and after successful format of you SSD the windows 7 will start installing
    - wait (about 8 - 10 min) for the first small window in top left corner to show up saying something like: VAIO RECOVERY TOOL
    - a moment later you should see another window (big one in the center, with the counter of 10 seconds and saying something that all programs are going to be installed) - PRESS CANCEL BUTTON in this window - this will give you CLEAN instalation of windows 7 without any sony (and others) programs
    - 5 min later system is ready - you need to install only video, audio, gobi and BT (all others drivers including SONY parser, I/O and card reader will be already installed)

    Maybe somebody mentioned this before but I did not see so I just decided to share my latest (ACCIDENTAL) discovery!! :)

    It is probably also worth pointing out that it is possible to get opengl 2.0 support on your graphic card, if you use intel EMGD drivers (EMGD for win7, IEGD for winxp) .

    Intel® Embedded Media and Graphics Driver (Intel® EMGD)

    It's not something regular user will necessarily need, but if your software requires opengl 2.0 it's the way to go. Unfortunately EMGD is just a kit, you need to create the drivers on your own. It was beyond my skills, and believe me, I tried. There is hope, however.
    User named jeonghun created such drivers, and posted them on page 116 of this very thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...s-official-owners-thread-116.html#post8205160

    It seems to work for me, brightness hotkeys and all, I only seem to have strange graphical glitch on waking up from sleep (would be great if someone could reproduce it), hibernate works though. For some it will be deal breaker, but I need opengl 2.0 much more than sleep function.
    I've re-uploaded the drivers just in case that link dies:

    Download emgd_1.10_win7_for_vaiox.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/h4knae23kq68o5j/emgd_1.10_win7_for_vaiox.zip

    (I would much rather like a guide on how he did that, but he doesn't seem to have any contact info on his profile)

    I use a business card or something similar to clear out the grooves around the trackpad.

    guys, my X has died. turn on power, green lite is on but nothing happens. no sound of fan spinning.
    i took it to sony service center and they are charging me SGD$60+ just for diagnosis!
    anyway, i decide to sell it away. anyone requires spare parts, i can sell to you.
    according to the lady who serviced me, she said it could be RAM or motherboard problem.
    so if you need any parts other than these 2 like battery, LCD, modem cards, etc.

    So just wondering if anyone has installed Win8 on their X yet, and how is the performance? Most importantly, is the multitouch trackpad working with Win8 gestures etc?

    My X is still being used by a family member and I'm debating updating it to Windows 8. The experience has been good on my Z21 so far, but I wanted some feedback from other X users who may have done similar.

    Thanks

    I only tried the beta version (the one prior to RTM). The performance was substantially better than Windows 7 - suddenly made it far more enjoyable to use the X again, both in the "Metro" part of the UI and the traditional desktop. It was slightly buggy after prolongued use, but I suppose that is to be expected from the beta version.
    Multitouch gestures did not work at that time - hopefully drivers are included now at release.

    I'll be trying it out this week. Did you encounter any driver issues outside of multitouch?

    You can try googling "synology multitouch" - drivers are not installed automatically on any sinology touchpads for some reason (even now that Win8 is officially out), but otherwise they should work fine in Windows 8 for 2 finger scroll and the new gestures. Let us know how you get on though.

    Has anyone done the Windows 8 upgrade yet? Everything working OK with our lame old GMA500? Flash video? I'm thinking of taking the plunge.

    Just a short hello - I am finally about to come into ownership of a X after close to a year of searching, being outbid etc.

    Are there any particular recommendations users have to get the best out of the thing? With regard to settings, etc? Or better hard discs?

    Many thanks in advance for any and all tips, and looking forward to sharing knowledge and experience.

    The bottleneck with the X is the crappy GMA500 graphics - not that the hardware itself is so bad, it's just that they never developed proper drivers that take advantage of the hardware.

    Windows 8 might have an advantage here as it is more optimised than Win7. The easiest way to try this out is to take a stock X, uninstall the junk third-party software (Norton, VAIO Gate etc), and upgrade immediately to Windows 8. If it's not great, you can run system restore to return to Windows 7 without losing anything.

    Otherwise, general recommendations include reducing the number of background tasks running, using a very light antivirus (such as Microsoft Security Essentials), and using Chrome rather than IE. Ad Blocking plugins in Chrome will dramatically improve your browsing experience. Running Windows with Aero turned off may help, but I never really noticed this myself.

    My old X was retired last year and is currently a travel laptop for a relative. It may soon be coming back into my possession so I might try installing Windows 8 on there to see if it can gain a new lease on life.

    Apart from that, I didn't have any trouble with the drivers.
    Interested to hear how the final version works out for you. Plan to upgrade when I get home in about three weeks (where the X is located).

    My first impression after installing Windows 8 is positive. There's no major improvement over Win 7 in the gfx department as it relates to HD video playback, but the interface is very snappy. Without the multi-touch gestures, the experience leaves a lot to be desired, but that's true of any keyboard/touchpad laptop using 8.

    Have you tried installing newer Synaptics touchpad drivers to enable multitouch support (eg Synaptics Touchpad Driver )? Having said that, I'm not 100% sure the touchpad is made by Synaptics, but might be worth a try ;-)

    It's ALPS hardware. I installed the fctory driver I downloaded from Sony's support website. Pinch zoom is the only gesture that's working... but I presume that's fixable since there obviously isn't a hardware limitation.

    So I installed windows 8 over 7 and it really bogged machine down. It would shut screen down under heavy processing.

    Then did a clean install of a new windows 8 and wow is it snappy!! I love it!

    Few problems though.

    No Smart wii utility or gps or verizon device or functionallity.

    Have tried sony drivers to no avail.

    Any thoughts??

    @arm: thanks a lot for your SDXC testing! so the card showed a full 64GB? according to Which VAIO model supports SDXC memory cards? : FAQ : Sony Middle East & Africa, only certain models support SDXC. you specified your model number, which was vpc-x11, and NOT x13, which is a good sign since it seems to be an older model. however, as you can see in the link I gave, sony say that only models after june 2010 are supported.

    => did you own your X before june 2010? thanks for your input!

    I installed the SmartWii utility along with some other things like the Sony Shared Library but was never able to get it fully working. There looked to be some .NET framework issue with the dialog bog, but after installing .NET, SmartWii just crashes when you try to load it.

    Spent a lot of time on this. had to completely restore 7, all was working, deleted bloatware, upgraded to 8 over 7 and now it all works...nice and snappy too. even loaded office 13 trial and it's great.
    This machine just got a new life!!!!

    Hi,

    This is the model I am using:

    VPCX113KG : X Series : VAIO™ Notebook : Sony Asia Pacific

    The SDXC card reads the full 64Gb.

    Regards.

    @arm

    that's been really helpful! thank you! according to this article's date (-> Sony Vaio X VPCX113KG/B [Review] ) , your models seems to be one of the first X's built, hence not a June 2010 model as claimed in Sony's SDXC statement. Perhaps Sony simply made a compatibility test in June 2012 for models sold at THAT point in time, thus entailing that it is not a statement that previously-built models are incompatible, but merely that they have not been part of the tested batch. This theory is supported by the fact that several vaio models were listed as compatible from 2012 june an later. It is unlikely that sony actually *upgraded* all those models with regards to the SDXC, but merely tested them.

    So bottom line, I'm going to test an SDXC when I come into need for one.

    ### One last question: I love the fact that the X, like most vaios, has two card slots, one being the Sony Memory Stick slot. I always keep a 32GB Memory Stick in there which I use for continuous backup from the SSD solely.

    There seems to be 256 GB SDXC cards available at the moment, which seems pretty much! However, I was unable to find >32GB Memory Sticks, which is strange indeed because Sony have been boasting about XC Memory Sticks with up to 2GB in 2009 already. So bad luck for me in terms of extending the Memory Card capacity. Anyone know why there are not >32GB Memory Sticks? In fact, I found absurd stuff like this:

    Dual Sandisk 32GB combined 64GB MEMORY STICK PRO DUO CARD for sony PSP DV DC etc | eBay

    This means you can (probably) currently have a Vaio X with (64+64)(MS)+256(SD)+256(SSD)=640GB and still have both USB slots free for use. (there may be 512 and 1TB replacements for the SSD, increasing this even more, don't know).

    On another note, check out this technology (Mirroring Memory Stick):

    Sony Global - Memory cards - Mirroring Memory Stick

    I am a bit sceptical. I am not an expert, but somewhere I read that a defunct controller is often more likely than a defunct actualy storage. I don't know if this has been taken care of. Nonethesless, this doesn't mean that these Mirroring Sticks do not reduce probability data loss. A separate backup should still be adviced of course.

    EDIT: ?? I used to be a notebook guru, and now I'm just a notebook geek???? Admins, would you please switch back to the more ego-stroking titles? It's for the good of everyone here.

    The Vaio X finally arrived yesterday evening...

    It came in a box which seemed too small to contain a computer...I then opened the box, took out some newspaper in it, removed the power cable and spare battery.
    One layer of newspaper below was.....an envelope. I simply could not believe that a computer could be inside it...but there it was.
    Left it on my computer table for a couple of hours and just marvelled at the machine and above all how slim it is.
    No regrets so far......

    Update of love story to follow......

    That's most likely beacuse DXVA is not running while you watch videos. Of course not all videos will run together wit DXVA but mkv, mp4 or ts, m2ts shoud always use DXVA (it means you should get a player which suppotrs it eg. MPC-BE)
