You should post the specs of the one you are offering.

Has anyone else tried installing Windows 10 Technical Preview on their X series? I installed it on mine just fine, but I haven't gotten Smart-Wi to work, so I can't turn on GPS or test the EVDO modem.

    Hi,

    has anyone the service manual/schematics for a VPCX11(5) ?

I've bought a X11 and it doesn't turn on with an external USB-powered optical drive via a Y-cable (actually two cables and plugs). After removing the USB plugs, still it doesn't turn on, I have to remove and reinsert the battery and after that I can power on the notebook again. If I use only one lead and plug to power the external drive, the X11 turns on. Somehow, it doesn't like to have both USB ports connected and provide a chunk of current.

My other machine, aVPCX11S1E has no problem with my external drive.
Is there something wrong or did Sony make more than on revision of the mainboard ?

    Hello.
its my first time here, congratulations for this great forum!!

I recently bought a second hand Vaio X with 2gb ram, 256gb ssd and atom z550. its a great computer and very light.
i installed windows 8.1 but its runs very slowly, specially when open and closing windows, i read in forums that is a video driver problem.
it is strange because i own a toshiba nb100 netbook with 1gb ram, common hd and atom n270 with windows 8.1 and it runs a lot better
someone knows how can i make my Vaio X go smoother?
or which video driver can i install?
    thank you very much

    Hi nomsb,

not much traffic anymore in this thread, seems that most X owners have moved on to other devices...

Anyway, about the drivers problem. While I'm not sure about Windows 8 on the Vaio X, I do recall that I never was able to find a video card driver with video hardware acceleration for the X. It seemed that Intel never actually got around to even make one.

However this affected only things like video playback and scrolling in different modern browsers.

General Windows performance (like open and closing windows) definitely should not be a problem with the X.

It seems however that others also had problems with Windows 8 on the X:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/sony-x-series-official-owners-thread.429543/page-132

Sorry, that's all I can say for the time being.

    Cheers
    David

Anyone tried Windows 10 on the X already?

I found that the new M$ Edge browser is an absolute KILLER, speed- and scrolling-wise, on my other laptop. Never seen anything like it on a PC.

Thanks for any experiences anyone has already with Win 10 on the X!

No I have not tried Win10 on the Vaio X, so far only on my other, large notebook. There, the M$ Edge browser is amazing (apart from having dropped Cleartype).

Nowadays browsers are really the only thing that puts the X in question in my view. Therefore, Win10 and its new browser could open another decade (or so) of use for it :)

Not sure whether any special drivers will be needed. My hope is that Win10 runs out of the box.

you are right about the browser David, I am struggling so much even with chrome! I am giving up on the X and my next choice would be the pro 11 but its not available in europe :(
at the moment edge is only for win10, do you think M$ will make it compatible for win7??

I use the k-meleon browser on the X at the moment. However I'm definitely going to try Win 10 soon. At present, there is no signs for the Edge browser coming for anything below Win 10!

Hi,I am VAIO X new user,I have used Win 10 about 2 months.
Win 10 performs not better than pervious OS in the X.I heard Edge is fast,so I use it most time, but is slow especially switch tabs.later I used IE,it performs better than Edge. Now,Win 10 isn't mature,I want to MS can optimize better...
here is a blog about Unofficial GMA 500 Driver Support website for Windows, the blog also writed his Win10 experience with Atom Z520.
    http://gma500booster.blogspot.it/

Last I have some questions wan to consult:
1.my VAIO model is VPCX115KX/B,official site say Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband BuiltIn,but why it does not have sim slot?
2.this is VGP-AC10V4 photo on JP offical site, but why my AC adapter logo isn't VAIO,is SONY?or US version is different?
3.VAIO X Display is wide gamut, how does it show sRGB gamut accurately?

Hi, interesting experience from your side. So you are saying that the Edge browser is not faster, hmm. What about scrolling? That should be better than anything else with the Edge browser.

About the GMA500 driver -- how does this work at the moment? Does it give the much missed hardware acceleration on the X finally?

Sorry about your other questions -- can't answer those unfortunately.

I make a simple test,a same site, first click space key Edge will appears 0.8s blank,IE appears 0.3s blank. If constantly scroll, the gap will be more obvious.
I am not understand the second question, but if I use system driver, the PC could not sleep, and video hardware slowly. So I must use GMA500 driver, still it will appears somes error now.

Usually it means your hard drive is dead or the HD connector cable got loosen. But since the X's SSD are soldered on board, I am afraid there isn't much you can do.

I just upgraded my Vaio X to Windows 10 and wanted to relate the experience. I used the media Creation Tool to upgrade the vanilla Windows 7 OS, not a clean install. It was a bit slow but trouble-free. All the hardware including Qualcomm 3G and GPS work, as do keyboard hotkeys and the wireless switch. There are no official GMA 500 drivers for Windows 10 so a generic display driver was loaded. I used compatibility mode to install the EMGD_1.16_w7_vaioX_no_flickering driver that I believe is in this thread somewhere. It seems glitch-free in my first couple hours of playing with it. Brightness adjustment still works after sleep mode and hibernation.
[edit] The EMGD_1.16_w7_vaioX_no_flickering driver may not be entirely stable. I've had a couple page_fault_in_nonpaged_area blue screen crashes, and the screen has gone black a couple times with window elements reappearing individually after a couple seconds.

The SSD is accessible inside the X11, it's the bare 2,5" PCB screwed to a frame without the 2,5" SSD housing.

I hope Intel will release a Win 10 driver for the GMA 500 !

Hello, I need to upgrade my SSD in my VPCX118LG as I am running out of space.
Will any 2.5 ssd or ssdhd work?
    I was looking at;
    Seagate ST1000LM014 1TB Hybrid
    Toshiba MQ01ABD100H 1TB Hybrid
Samsung EVO 500GB 850 Series SSD

    Any help much appreciated :)

So there is still no hardware accelerated driver out there? Its such a bummer because without hardware acceleration, the X is barely usable nowadays.

Wait... how is the Microsoft Edge browser behaving on the X?

OK, so I installed Windows 10 -- everything is working out of the box. Performance is, well, bearable -- if used as a typewriter.

Btw., is the RAM upgradeable on the X?

Just was going to report that the GMA500 driver from here works in Windows 10. This is version 8.14.10.2011 of 31.08.2009,

Still no function with the Fn+brightness buttons, but I can live with that.

OK, sadly my X has now died, too. It just wouldn't switch on anymore, or it would instantly switch off after a few seconds or minutes.

The least I could do was to honorably disassemble it into its individual parts, once again admiring the incredible build quality, and take a photo of it.

For example, just think of the no less than three separate wireless cards (in the foreground to the right).

I'm curious if anyone has any success stories running Linux on the VAIO X. I imagine a lightweight build like Lubuntu might extend it's usefulness.
