First of all, i thank you very much for this effort, really do.
The program you need is http://www.biosmods.com/download/award/awd883.zip , and the command "awdflash a:backup.bin /sy /pn", but the catch is that you need to run it on pure DOS, not under XP or Vista...

Hello West3Man, i've found a easyer way to back up a sony vaio bios, without DOS... Alredy tested in my TX and was quite easy...

    1.)
    Download the "Phoenix Winpflash Utility".
    For example from here:
    ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/utilities/winphlash/winphlash-utility.zip

After this, install and run the "Phoenix Winpflash Utility".

    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios00.png

    2.)
    Choose: "Backup BIOS only"

    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios01.png

    3.)
It sounds weird and crazy, but take any PhoenixBIOS update,
    for example from acer:
    ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/extensa_3000/bios/3a06_intel.zip ( ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/extensa_3000/bios/3a06_intel.zip)
You can also take any other (256K/512K/1024K) Phoenix BIOS updates.

    4.)
Extract and add the .wph file from the mentioned
example BIOS file: 3a06_intel.zip to the: "Specify new BIOS file" -field
    and choose: "Advanced settings".

    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios02.png

    5.)
Then deselect all clickboxes and press Ok.

    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios03.png

    6.)
    Now press: "Backup BIOS"

    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios04.png

    7.)
Accept the following message/ info dialog box...:
    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios05.png

...and go on with backup your BIOS.

    8.)
    When backup process is finished...
    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios09.png

...you sould see the BIOS dump...
    http://bnobtc.pix-art.com/images/borgbios/phoenix-winphlash-backup-bios10.png

Finally, you can send the BIOS file to me.
    Very thankfull

can you help a newbie here?
i just got a TXN25N, it comes with the dragged Vista and only 1GB RAM.
Since the spec said "1.5GB max", were you able to successfully add a 2GB RAM chip?

    Which brand did you get?

    Thanks.

    Hey all,

I've got a VGN-TXN25N that I just installed a clean version of Vista Ultimate on. I'm trying to figure out what drivers and applications form the Sony support sight I actually NEED and what's bloatware. Unfortunately, the descriptions of most of downloads are terrible.

Has anybody here done this before? Can you point me in the right direction?

    Many thanks!

My TXN25N/B was randomly freezing on me. I've started making sure to reboot it once every day or as necessary. I suspect it's a memory issue of some sort, but it really is beyond me. I also blame Vista and what some call Sony's bloatware.

Anyway, since I've started to do this, I've noticed the pc doesn't freeze like it did. I thought that knowledge might do someone else some good, so I decided to post about it.

This may help. Link to a discussion of this on another site where a couple of people have done this on a TX850P. I would expect it to work on the TXN as well based on the info you refer to above.

    I put 2GB in my TX850P/B

Hope this helps. I plan to try it.

I don't even remember. I got it from NewEgg.
My original post was from January.
    My TXN15 still kicking.
In computer properties shows 2GB of memory.
When I checked system information shows 2560 MB Total Physical Memory.
Specs for it call for max of 1.5 GB also.

For those who are interested in a very small laptop bag for those quick carries, the kind of bag that's more than a sleeve, check this out.

    Denali Structured DVD Bag

Fits the Vaio VGN-TXN15P I have like a glove! Also comes with a decent shoulder strap and a flat cloth "pad" that holds 8 or so CD/DVD's. Not only that, but it's cheap. Target sells it for $20. Only flaw is that the side pocket is not very expandable which is problematic for bulky items like mice and power supplies.

Found out about it from one of the ASUS EEE forums. See here for a good review of the bag.

WARNING Due to the EXTREME THINNESS of the TXN and TZ screens, make sure you put the screen side of the laptop on the opposite side of the case from the pocket. The power supply is a wee tight when placed in the side pocket and any pressure on the top of the laptop could crack the screen. Be smart, be careful.

I have a Vaio TXN15P. I did some digging and my Dell XPS 1530 uses the same 200 pin format DDR2 SODIMMs that the TXN15P uses. So, just for giggles, since I have 2x2G in the XPS, I cracked both, pulled the 512MB SODIMM from the Vaio and dropped in a Samsung 2G DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) SODIMM from my XPS. The Vaio booted just fine. :)

Internally the Vaio has 512MB built in because I had 1G originally and only removed the one 512MB DIMM I had access to reach. After the change, the BIOS showed 2048MB of RAM and Windows XP showed 1.99GB as well. The Vaio appears to support and work with the faster DDR2-667 SODIMMs as well as the stock DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) SODIMMs. I'm sure it down-clocks the faster SODIMM to DDR2-533 speeds, but they do work. The VAIO just won't show more than 2048MB of ram regardless.

    Both SODIMM's were Samsung.
The 512MB SODIMM had 4 larger chips on the board.
The 2G SODIMM had 8 smaller chips on the board.

Hope this info helps someone else with an older TX/TXN machine. Moi is off to Newegg to buy a 2G SODIMM for my TXN15P. :D

Checking if anyone is still using this Thread???

I have been trying to economically add some semi perm storage to my TXN-15 by filling the SD card slot.

I hardly ever use this slot and with 32Gb cards available out there was wondering if any TX or older sony users have beaten the 2 gig card limit problem?

I tried plugging in a 8Gb memStick and 8Gb SD card with no joy(Only2Gb showing)???

I was also looking into maybe getting a PCMCIA adapter that would accept the larger SD or other memory formats but I worry about the PCMCIA card using up power when not in use. The Mem Sticks and SD cards in the slots don't get hot, aka suck up amps unless I am accessing them :)

Thanks in advance for the help,

The battery life is just amazing with XP.
With level 3 brightness, wifi on in max battery XP settings and not Sony's i see a little over 9hrs 30 mins on the clock at full charge. With wifi of battery life should be around 10 hours.
I was without my laptop for a little while and i could not remember if the 9 hours battery life that i wrote in my sig was with wifi on or of. The fact that those estimated 9 plus hours is with wifi on is really impressive.

Now just because it shows 9 hours plus does not mean that i will get that dead on. I should though be able to get around 8 hours 40 with wifi on. This translates to very good battery even with mobile broadband.

I have the standard battery. This laptop was bought in October 2007 so the battery is quite well used by now. I bought this laptop second hand.
I always thought that the TZ had a smaller capacity battery but it turns out that is not the case going on what was posted in this thread earlier.

I was going to switch back to Vista as i need a decent sound recorder and i am having problems with the trackpad. I will stick with XP now though and try and find a solution to my problem.

    Edited to add:

I am using HP Alps touchpad drivers for XP now and they are great. I also don't appear to have any HP branding on my laptop. I can also customise the trackpad in more ways now then i could using Vista.

sorry, i would post this in the txn owners forum, but i think that is closed. i have a txn15p.

to txn owners out there or anyone who would know,

could you tell me the location of your:
mass storage controller, pci slot ?
pci to nubus bridge, pci slot ?

i ask because i get errors upon bootup.
    error
resource conflict - pci serial bus controller in slot 01 and
resource conflict - pci mass storage device in slot 01

i think it is because my computer thinks they are both in the same slot.

does anyone know how i can resolve this issue?

    much thanks.

I moved your post over for you, that way it also keeps the thread open.

I've sold my TX( i owned a model with a 1.33 core solo processor)
I do have this saved though, i don't know if this will be at all helpful to you. You could try uninstalling/deleting the driver in the device manager and restart and see if that resolves your problem.
