Press Assist button to bring up boot menu. From there you can go to bios to turn off secure boot to be able to boot from an external drive. Also from there, you can select to boot from USB drive.

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone tried to use the new stylus from the VAIO Duo 13 and VAIO Flip series?
Will it work? If so, does it improve upon the stylus that come with the Duo 11? The lag is rather noticeable, though bearable at times. Just wondered if there's anything to improve upon it at all, albeit slightly.
Thanks in advance for the tips. -
Does anyone know if there is a copy of the recovery media available on the net anywhere? Disc 4 of my 5 disc set is apparently damaged. Thx.

If you're having trouble with the screen registering random clicks on the left side (a big problem if that's where you keep your taskbar), you can fix it by going to N-Trig's latest page and downloading the latest drivers (when you "choose your device," choose Win8.1 and use the Surface Pro 3 option, because Sony's models aren't listed in the drop-down menus). It'll fix it.
EDIT: Never mind, the problem just returned. Anyone have an idea why screen is registering random inputs in the top-left when neither the stylus nor my finger nor the mouse pointer are near there? -
Hope this helps, it's a bit of a fiddle as far as I can remember. -
Sony Vaio Duo 11 Touchscreen and screen problems -
I am experiencing blue screens when trying to update the audio driver of my Vaio Duo 11
Has anyone tried updating these drivers and found a solution?
Regardless of the driver version (I've tried WHQL and betas, early 2013 up to the very latest from 2014 - some with Dolby included and some without Dolby), the device will crash with a blue screen while installing the driver.
If I force the driver installation without any other software, it crashes as well and will crash on every reboot until I remove the driver.
My device is running perfectly stable except for this driver installation...
My only options are either the Microsoft default driver (Aug 2013) or the one from Sony's website (Oct 2012) - which are both quite dated.
I have got the i5 (3317u) version with 4 GB of Ram and updated the pre-installed Windows 8 x64 to Windows 8.1.
The blue screen is always caused by "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED".
I have consulted Google but the only results that seemed to be remotely related were caused by a defective Windows installation (which used to crash several times, even without updating the Realtek driver).
Any help or hint would be great -
Unfortunately, I can't help. My drivers are dated July 2012 - never had any problems with the audio so never had a need to update.
-
It's not like that - I am not suffering from any specific problem.
But there is some kind of feeling that I might be missing out on some nice features or tweaks.
After all: about two years is quite some time in regards to those drivers...
Today i finally found a driver that works
I am now running "Audio Driver (Realtek) - 6.0.1.7135" which Sony released for the Vaio Duo 13 (i.e. the successor to our device).
It can be found here: Sony :SVD1321M2E : Xperia Link Update Program
However, I have no clue as to why this one works and all the others don't.
Perhaps, Sony makes use of some hidden features or they simply messed up the system and need custom drivers to run decently - I have no clue, why the normal drivers don't work.
But at last, I have found one driver that is semi-recent 07/01/2014 and works fine. -
And do you notice any difference?
-
Like I stated before: I prefer recent driver versions - there might just be that little bug fix here or that extra ounce of performance
You could call it some kind of hobby meets OCD, but I just like to keep my drivers as up to date as possible... -
Thanks. Just curious as to whether it was worth my while updating...

There is a thread about the disassembly at Duo 11 Teardown / SSD upgrade | TabletPCReview.com - Tablet PC Reviews, Discussion and News
Unfortunately, I have not found any decent pictures about dismantling the device itself - there is a rather vague guide at iFixit and that's pretty much it.
The other sites merely offer pictures of the disassembled Vaio.
Good luck -
Anyone upgrade to windows 10?
-
It's working quite well, although my RAM usage (I've got 4GB of RAM) hovers around 40% to 50% when Windows 10 is completely booted and logged in.
This seems to be a bit above my Windows 8.1 use, but I am not 100% certain what is causing this.
The only flaw so far is my N-Trig digitizer in OneNote:
There is a bug that seems to misinterpret my stylus input as a touch gesture and removes the written ink in OneNote after a few seconds.
This problem is a known bug in OneNote and has first appeared on my device after upgrading to Windows 10.
This happens only sometimes, without any specific pattern, but is quite annoying when it does!
After doing some research I have found similar reports by users running Windows 8.1, so it might not be related to Windows 10...
Aside from that I am quite happy with Windows 10 -
-
Thanks very much for replying, I was worried Sony drivers might not work properly in 10.
Does the update mess the recovery partition? It seems a bit of waste and I had made a recovery flash.Last edited: Jul 29, 2015 -
Don't know, i haven't checked it
-
I also upgraded. Very smooth and and things like brightness/volume buttons work ok. Drivers seem to have installed fine (just needed to install a driver for the SD card reader).
There seems to be one bug that I've spotted: In Win 8.1, when you bring out the keyboard, it not only turns off auto-rotate but puts the screen in the correct orientation for the keyboard. Under Windows 10, it just turns off auto-rotate, leaving the orientation unchanged. Not looked at the recovery partition. -
Upgraded, etc everything seems all alright. The switch between desktop and tablet mode is not smooth, the full screen and max window are odd and the task bar may linger after the switch. But generally better than 8.1.
-
Having checked the Sony 'live' update, I noted that the SVD1122C5E had no compatibility issues but there was to be further testing. Well, I did a full system backup and bit the bullet and am now running W10.
Upgrading was not as smooth as I would like and took three attempts; Windows was fool proof though and eventually got the job done. There is one particular issue regarding pen touch settings that I can't work around as it does not provide me with a settings screen but the pen works for basic elements and writing. Cortana functions well despite saying it did not like the microphone firm/hardware, all settings were completed without further issues but I needed to download the language and speech packs in the language setting dialogue.
All my legacy software seems to function as before but some settings needed changing or restoring as they did not come across in the update process. The screen handling is good with what appears to be better control of the scaling and I have had no issues here.
Sony never resolved the battery monitor feature in W8 when upgrading to W8.1. This provided control of charging and discharging to 80% / 20% limits to extend battery life. It was supposed to be part of the VAIO care pack but it never worked for me despite a couple of re-installs. Bluetooth reliability was also an old issue and this has not changed.
I'll keep this post updated with any issues. -
I have tried to upgrade the ssd with a Plextor 256GB. After cloning the drive with EaseUS I tried to boot the Vaio. The UEFI Menu come up and the drive was recognised, however the Windows would not boot. The error message was No Operating System found. Has anybody succeeded in upgrading a Vaio 11? Thanks
-
I bought my Vaio Duo 11 around 2.5 years ago and a few days ago, it won't start. It's written in the screen that the Operating System Not Found.
Can anybody help me with this problem?
I tried to go to the service center but, they said they couldn't fix it -
With the machine off, press the assist button (underneath) - that should turn it on in "rescue mode". From there you can recover your system. Note that, depending on what it needs to do, you may lose all your data.
-
Try going to the UEFI menu and check for your drive.
If it is not recognized then you need to replace your SSD. -
Hi guys, I've owned the duo 11 since it first came out in Nov 2012, and I've been extremely happy with it. I'm disappointed that Sony discontinued the line. I'd like to get another one to have as a replacement. I suspect chances of finding a new one are slim, but does anyone know if there are any to be had? Or, if not new, then maybe some manufacturer-refurbished ones?

How were you able to open it without destroying the speaker grills?

Very nice. That's useful to know. Thanks! I've always been very cautious about opening it up for that reason.
-
FYI, official W10 drivers are now available on Sony support. Though the biggest changes are to the Sony applications for W10.
-
THE FIX: Run the battery down completely and then remove any residual static charge by:
1. Turn the computer off and unplug if from the charger and expandable battery if you have one
2. Press the ASSIST button to start up the VAIO diagnostics and select from there start the UEFI/BIOS
3. Allow the computer to completely run down (It will not hibernate nor go into standby when you are w/in the BIOS as no battery management software is available there
4. Press the power button for 10 seconds 2 or 3 times and try booting the computer regularly as well (It should not boot and all residual static charge should now drain).
5. Plug the charger into the computer and restart. VOILA your keyboard hopefully works. -
Help! my Vaio Duo 11 screen is dying!
Owner of Vaio Duo 11 since its release in 2012, the screen has started to exhibit small white dot at bottom left corner about 2-3mm few days ago but didn't bother me that much.
BUT suddenly yesterday i turned it on again an the white area is now spreading about 2-3cm and make bright dead spot! How possible??
Unit was never dropped or no pressures were applied to the screen.....
Someone has same problem on aging Vaio Duo11 i am raging about Sony quality dropping. Ghosting issue and now deadly white sport screen....hope my Z Canvas won't suffer from it too in few year.
I will ask for repair, since living in Japan but i believe it will cost an arm.

I am experiencing the very same phenomenon on my display and had thought that it was due to pressure on the screen.
My Vaio has travelled the world with me and started to show those dreaded air bubbles in the display about 7 months ago...
About 2 weeks ago, this bright spot in the lower left corner appeared and it keeps growing :-(
The spot is spreading (this thread is displayed in Chrome at 100% Zoom and native resolution, fyi) and seems to distort the colors as well - e.g. have a look at the blueish Windows flag...
Do you know any remedy for those problems?
I recently bought a semi defrctive unit to upgrade my Sony to 8GB Ram and the i7 and had planned to use it for some time to come.
I am really disappointed in Sony's build quality by now!Last edited: Oct 4, 2016 -
FrozenLord, thank you for your feedback sadly I would expect owners like us to have this issue after few years of usage with no abuse. Front glass is solid like bullet proof glass, no way to torn or get such pressure to damage screen...
I notice same issue on my Xperia Z3 compact screen, white dot like white sport is literally burning the screen this result as cheap, again customer paid premium for planned obsolescence. it looks like poor adhesive lifespan between underneath layers and LCD.
My nearly 10 years Vaio-z is like brand new though.
Outside warranty I don`t see how to fix it permanently, even so you may expect same issue to happen soon or later with replacement screen.
-As for temporary fix I would try to open casing and apply some pressure to stack layer again but I guess whole screen may be glued to digitizer.
-Other would be to try with heater to slightly warm the area and see if could melt the adhesive again but without pressure this is almost pointless.
-Buy defective unit, could be the solution... our screen may be defective batch that other could probably last more longer.
Any idea to check LCD manufacturer or id?? -
i Checked approximate repair for screen will be 488USD without taxes (VAIO Japan service)....

Necroing the thread to seek advice: is there any value in a BNIB Duo 11 for approximately US$600 or should I look elsewhere? It's the i5-3317U/4GB/128GB configuration and I'd be upgrading the RAM by additional 4GB/8GB. Should I pick this over a more modern SP4 (which runs for quite a bit more for similar spec)? Thanks.
-
The ram is a proprietary form factor unique to the Vaio Duo 11 - unless you get a defective 8GB version to disassemble there is no way to upgrade the RAM.
Additionally, there are much better performing devices available for 600 USD, especially if you consider refurbished devices.
I would go for a last gen Core M device if I were you. (E.g. HP Elite x2)
Alternatively, you can get a new device with a Core M and 8GB for roughly 600 USD. (E.g. Teclast X5 Pro)
I can only advise against buying the Sony Vaio Duo.
Factors include the display coming apart (see above), the low performance compared to recent Core M devices and the fixed angle keyboard.Starlight5 likes this. -

Cheers. -
Imagine the Sony's optical one like a finger scanner that you have to swipe in order to move the mouse - no consistent movement there...
I would have a look at HP's professional convertible lineup or Lenovo's Carbon series. -
Hi, could you help me? My Vaio Duo 11 had a LCD problem. I tried to resolve the Glue Leak and on the final steps, before to do the new glue process, I acidentally broken the LCD, and when I tried to see if it was working, it turns on, and died. The problem is, the unit don't recognizes more the "monitor" and not turn on the LED neither the display. I have tried to replace the Complete Display Unit (LCD + Digitizer) for a used unit, but did not work too.

I bought one of these when they first came out, but i had to return it for the screen burn issue, I had had it a month and found out about the burn-in from this thread on the first day, So for the first month i scrutinized the screen and no problems, then suddenly i got burn-in all around the edge on the screen, never seen burn-in on an lcd before, so devastated.

Vaio Duo 11 LCD screen problems
Did anyone find a solution? Has it now covered the entire screen? Such a shame. Wondering how much longer I will be able to use this great machine.
