Since the OS uses the same driver for all of the ports I doubt if reinstalling windows will have any effect. That seems to be a canned answer some folks (clueless) give to just about any issue.

One thing you might try, after making sure you have a good image of the C: drive, is to go into the device manager and uninstall all the usb bus controllers and then reboot. But I would NOT do this unless you have a complete image of the C: drive just in case this goes awry. I've done this with other devices to force the OS to reconfigure a device, but I have not specifically done it with USB ports, hence my insistence on having fall back plan.

Gary, i even did that before but i did it again yesterday but still not working.

I don’t know i can’t relate that issue to update or to a device i recently used i really can’t remember, but what am sure of is that the power still going on that port.

You can try re-installing the Intel chipset drivers from here http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...D=&DwnldId=18494&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng

To install the driver, open Run from the start menu search, browse to the downloaded exe file and add -overall at the end as shown (no quotes and there is a space inbetween) "infinst911autol.exe -overall" and hit enter.

    Hi,

Perhaps the USB port is actually physically damaged.

On my PCG-F680 I used a gooseneck USB light and killed one of the two.

I Stopped using the light and later the other USB port stopped working.

I had to get a cardbuss card to have any USB ports on that old laptop.

Use a strong light to look at the port and compare how the contents look compared to the other ports.

I can see one of the contacts on the first to fail are not as high. :(

Latest Drivers for SONY VAIO VGN-FZ140 E

I hope I am not posting in the wrong forum.

I am using XP Pro SP3 and my laptop is Sony VAIO VGN-FZ140E

About 2 years back I found drivers for the subject laptop for XP. Took me about 1 full month almost because at that time SONY was only offering/supporting drivers for Vista.

I have misplaced the CD on which I had backed up the collected drivers. I plan to format my laptop and do a fresh installation. I'm currently using XP and a number of features are still not working so I will probably end up with Windows 7 (unless I can use all the features under XP).

Also under Device Manager I have many drivers which show up when I select 'Show Hidden Devices'.

Can someone please help me find the latest drivers for XP and Windows 7 for my laptop. Will be extremely grateful.

Windows 7 you will need to do your forum search, just do 'FZ 64bit or 32bit windows 7' and you should find what you are looking for.

For windows XP they should be the Sony support website, use google or another search engine. I know for Asia/Pacific the FZ has XP drivers available.

Thanks. I found a few URLs for XP but would need luck to find drivers for Windows 7.

One more question please. I have come across many posts when I did a search using 'FZ 32bit windows'. To be honest the more I read, the more confused i got. My Laptop originally came with Vista and I paid an arm and a leg (including many hours on the net myself looking for XP drivers). Now suppose I want to shift to 32-Bit Win7. Do I first install Vista and then install Win7 on top of that so that I do not end up with any driver related issues. Or do I format my HD and do a fresh Win7 install hoping that Win7 will automatically find the drivers for me?

I'm am really really confused here and can really use some help and guide to exactly the right step by step link. I know that is probably asking for way too much but.. just really confused and have no clue how to proceed :(

    Hi,

I am new to this forum and was wondering if someone can help me with some issues in relation to my Sony VAIO VGN-FZ17G laptop.

I have updated my system from Vista to Windows 7 recently due to which I cant connect my TV via HDMI port, cant use any of the functions using "Fn" key and cant use memory card aswell.

I tried to locate drivers for the windows 7 but was unsuccessful for this model.

    Help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

Can someone help me? I have a Sony Vaio FZ11S with HDMI. If I use the HDMI of the Sony Playstation 3 to connect my notebook to my tv (also has HDMI), then I will get a screen, but no sound. I searched on the internet and they said that it was related to the driver of my sound. Because first the possibility Digitital Audio (HDMI) said it was not connected. After I installed a new driver, it says that it's connected, but still I don't have sound if I connect it. Does anyone knows what the problem is? Because my girlfriend has a HP and if she connect it, it does work! We then have to use the HDMI cable and a sound cable, but it works!

    Please help me!

    Pointing device is the touchpad.
You need to install the Sony shared library, Sony firmware extension parser, Notebook utilities, and Vaio Control center for the fn key and shortcut button control.

Sorry for all but all of a sudden my display card got a problem that’s what I have been told by the guy who was trying to fix my computer, and he added that the card has been displaced and he re fit it again  but obviously he doesn’t as after few days the problem came back and I decided to wait till I get some1 professional to fix it up.

So for now am using my new F Series yet am not so happy with the screen colors.

Will updates you soon I fix up that problem.

The problem just came all of a sudden, the computer fall in the ground once n it was on but i took it out of power and turn it on and all was ok.

Later after a month or something i was traveling and was trying to run my computer during the flight when the low batteries message came on but the computer didn’t hibernate as it supposed to do it went off as the power cuts.

came later home trying to open but no hope, u can see the power led and all the power related items work like u can open the dvd even turning on and off the wifi , connect anything to usb and there is power.

then i took off the Ram and the hard disk and re fit them again then the computer started later, but last for another 3 days before it did it again, and before it went off allot of noise and dots came on the screen as if the power surge is unstable yet its fine and a message show up u got a problem with the display card, then restarted the computer and that’s it, but this time removing and re fitting the ram or the hard disk didn’t work.

went to that guy, he said the graphic card is not removable, but look like it lost its sealing to the motherboard, true i felt he is not honest, but he brought it back again, but again after one week it went off again.

then i opened the lap myself checked everything and took off each cable from its socket and re fit all then surprisingly after fitting everything the computer work, but only for another 2 days.

Now i left it a side and ordered the F series as i have allot of work and decided to wait until i get some pro help.

    hello guys
I have a FZ11M for 3 years now. It plays the role of a always on laptop.

The one and most important problem i had in the first weeks was that the laptop was freezing when the cpu was idle only! vaio service replaced its CPU and the problem was solved.

The major problem i am facing now is overheating. I have cleaned it thanks to your guide i have found in this forum but didnt help.
If for example i try to rip a blu ray disc using an lg external blu ray burner, my vaio can go up to 95C (cpu) and 90C (gpu) !!!! It is untouchable and of course i shut it down immediately otherwise i am sure it will die after some minutes :(

For the last 6 months i have installed windows 7. TO be honest when i was using vista i think that i didnt have any problems. Do you think that the overheating problems could be due to some bad drivers of windows 7?

Do u suggest anything else? Its ironic to use my netbook msi wind u100 for some jobs like blu ray ripping with maximum cpu temp at 50C while the fz11m goes to +90C

Funny, I noticed that in the past couple of weeks my wife's 2-yr old FZ started to become quite hot at night (under-surface and keyboard, not the actual CPU/GPU temp), even though the machine is idling. I tore it apart and the fan seemed to be pretty clean. I am suspecting some Windows or Flash update is going on the background, but I haven't really had time to track it down yet.

Well, it's probably somethng people should be aware of. nVidia claimed heat would make the GPU fail, but there never was any claim officially that the bad GPU would make both CPU & GPU run hot. And you can't request service just yet since the GPU hasn't actually failed.

The Nvidia issue has nothing at all to do with what is being discussed here. The Nvidia issue is one of a difference in the coefficient of expansion between adjacent layers of the GPU. This difference caused small cracks to appear if the GPU was subjected to large temperature swings. It had nothing to do with generating elevated temperatures.

I would just like to thank my FZ for freezing up the other week. Somehow the HD got corrupt in the process and I had to re-install win-7. I cant really blame sony, but Ive had my fair share of issues with this laptop. Whats an actually good company that stands behind their products?

Just the battery draining really fast, and my SD card slot is touchy. Ive even replace all my batt cells with higher 5200 mah and it still drains.
Oh and for some reason the software that came with the FZ to play blurays completely stops working. Other than that and the fear that my NVIDIA 8400m GT video card can stop working at anytime, the laptop serves its purpose.

I assume you have updated WinDVD with the most recent update from Sony (version 8.0 DXVA B20.185 dated 05/07/2010).

Does WinDVD BD play DVDs but not Blu-Rays?

If so, your problem is likely due to a nvidia driver that is not registering a signed WHQL certificate. For example the drivers from LV2G will have a WHQL certificate, but it will not appear as signed in the driver dialog. The same is true if you download "official" drivers from nvidia.com then manually edit the NV.INF to add the device ID for your 8400M GT. As I best as I can recall, the two latest versions in the MS Update catalog applicable to the 8400M GT in Sony FZ laptops which are signed are v185.85 and v197.45.

For me, anytime I was using a LV2G driver between those versions I couldn't play Blu-Ray movies. Updating (or rolling back) to one of those drivers immediately solved my problem. I believe HDCP compliance requires an unmodified signed driver. It seems even editing the .INF breaks the digital signature, if present.

I just bought a brand-new, OEM replacement battery and the laptop will not even BOOT under Windows 7. I had to return it...w.t.f???

Why some aftermarket batteries claim to work and some don't? Is it Windows 7 or the hardware?

I was playing Dragons Age on my Vaio FZ21S and it freezed suddenly, making a strange loud noise from the speakers.
I turned it off using the power button and restarted it. The screen now remains black without showing BIOS screen, only power and bt lights on. No sign of activity from HD, no sound from speakers, fan is running and so BD-Rom boot check.
I've cleaned it from dust this morning, like I usually do 4 times a year and I've never had this kind of problem. After cleaning, I turned it on and everything worked. 3 hours later, it crashed.
Could NVidia 8600 have broken, damaging motherboard too?
I'll try to replace ram and hd and take a look to what will happens then.
    Any suggestion?
    Thx a lot.
