    Hi guys,

I was wondering how many hard drives could fit in the Vaio Z, because on the SonyStyle site when configuring the HD's and choosing for example 256GB SSD it shows 2x128GB SSD. Does this mean 2x SSD hard drives? If so then I'm wondering why they don't make the option available to put in 2x256GB SSD's. Also, if 2 SSD's are possible, are 2 standard 2,5" spinning HD's possible?

    Thanks for the advice.

The problem with putting two regular (mechanical) hard drives in a small laptop is HEAT! Spinning hard drives create heat that SSDs, with no moving parts, don't. Even some 17" systems have heat dissipation problems when equipped with two hard drives- especially if one or both of them run at 7200rpm.

Yea, I wouldn't do that either. But is there space for 2 SSD's? Or only 1?

Vaio Z with 256GB SSD (2x128GB) uses two 1.8" SSD drives. It isn't possible to use two 2.5" drives, regardless SSD or regular (mechanical). Heat isn't the limited factor.

seeing as the cd rom is sata - can you not get an adaptor that will allow you to replae the cd drive with a hard disk??
I've heard of a company doing this for the new macbooks

It's a complicated and technical process. The result of years of research and engineering.

But the reasoning is sound, dammit!

Yes, you could remove the optical drive and fit a 2.5" HDD in there. I currently have a 64GB SSD boot drive and a 320GB 2.5" HDD for personal files. There's a thread on this somewhere...
