Why do you think its a firmware issue rather than a dead drive?

    Also, you're n Windows 7?

If it reads CDs correctly it could be a driver issue or a dying drive - especially is you used it a lot I'd think it may be worth considering the dying drive angle.

Well on my old laptop when the drive started to fail it started with DVDs, then CDs.

If you are in warranty - put Vista on it - via recovery discs (its Sony...) if it still doesn't work - send it off to Sony to have the drive replaced.

Might be a good idea if you send it off.

One thing - it happened out of nowhere, its not a something that is Win7 unique?

I'll try install linux (is more quickly) to try drive, what you think?

PS: to I put windows vista I need install all because I lose recovery partition, but I think witch they don't tell anytjink because that... I this witch only need put 2gb RAM.

Well, if it worked originally I think for some reason the drive has started to fail.

As I said, it was the same with my old laptop - it started on DVDs, and finally CDs had problems...

I have found 2 things with dvd drives. One the head may be dirty. You can't see it but use a can of air and blow the head off. The other thing is the Vaio's seem to be very picky what kind of disk you use. So maybe try a different brand.

Nowadays discs have pretty much got the same quality - may even come from the same factory.

Cleaning - it may be worth a try, its also likely to potentially damage a drive... I suppose you have little to use if you are set on a warranty exchange.
