Hi there, (sorry for my english im not american)

This thread is more like a poll.
To the vaio z owners i will ask you some questions:

1- Total of disk space in windows (in GB)

2- Gb used & gb free. If you have from 10 to 20gb of free space,it decrease the perfomance?

3-a- What you have installed (programs that take much space in SSD). Ex: photoshop,vm workstation, adobe illustrator, office, etc.

    3-b- games.

4- How much space do you have for personal DATA (music & video)

5- do you use external storage? which? (how about usb 3.0 on express card?,battery life)

Thanks, you can help to decide to buy a 128gb model and then buy some external storage, or spend more money to get to a 256gb model.

Of course it depend how many programs and games are you installed, just i wanna know what you have done!

    good luck!! :D

I think 128GB is enough if you don't game. If I see that The Witcher 2 already occupies a good 30GB of valuable SSD space here, you'll be very limited with a 128 GB Z. You can replace your DVD with a Newmodeus caddy and a 750 GB HDD though!

You can hook up external storage to your Z through 20$ flush fit eSATA or USB3.0 ExpressCards. It is quite comfortable to access backup and media storage drives with decent speed (100MB/s is no big deal) while retaining maximum portability. More info and products available on the links in my signature.

Hmm, regarding the HDD caddy, how does memory allocation work? I'm afraid that I don't fully understand the RAID and whatnot... If I were to save something, do I choose which hard drive to save it to (as in, do they exist as separate entities?)?

And doesn't the Z already have two separate SSDs anyways? Are they treated as a single unit?

Sorry for all the clueless questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

In the out-of-the-box configuration, you'd have a 128GB drive C: (which are your SSDs combined together in one, this is RAID0) and a 1TB or whatnot drive D: which is your HDD in a drive caddy.

Long story short, you will have two seperate drives and you can chose where you want to save what on. You will most likely have your OS on your fast SSDs and media files / other data on your big HDD.

Any reason you recommend the Thinkpad T400 caddy over the newmodeus, other than price? Does it absolutely fit just as well?

Thanks. I guess that would save you about $50, right?

Unfortunately, no (pic props to Zoinks, source here):

The lenovo caddy leaves a hole on the VGA port side and is not curved to fit the outer shape of the Z perfectly because it has another, straight bezel shape. IIRC, the bezel was not detachable as well. So, using a lenovo 9.5mm caddy in a Z is still a tradeoff between price and look. Technically, it works the same though.
