Thank you Andrew. The guide works perfectly including links! It makes the install quite easy. My only complaint is that the Hybrid Graphics driver has to be downloaded from 4shared which is a pain to download from. Later I found a link from a fellow user pointing to netload, which just worked (4shared either wanted to download some bloatware or to register...).nks a
Anyway thanks again for your time!!! -
Thanks for this How To Andrew.
I have a VPC Z11 and follow exactly your guide.
I have 2 troubles.
1. To switch from speed to stamina i have to reboot (VGA switch is auto in bios)
2. The hotkeys (brightness ...)are not working.
I am using your hybrid driver
Edit : other troubles :
VAIO network doesn't work
Do you have same troubles ? Do you have ideas ?
Thanks
EDIT 17 jan 2013 :
For hotkeys to work I had to install at the end of all :
1/ Setting_Utility
2/ Shared library (reboot and installed 2 times ...)
3/ Event Service
This mad me work the VGA switch speed/stamina -
thanks for this Anrew! great work! im going to try it at this weekend and see how it goes.
does anythign not function properly? brightness control and audio through HDMI are really important. I probably would just stick with windows 7 if they don't work.
Thanks again! -
i used all the drivers. everything worked fine. the nvidia drivers caused artifacts to show on firefox. the workaround was disabling hardware acceleration of firefox. Thanks again Andrew08!
-
no, the hdmi audio doesn't seem to work. atleast not for me. I installed the realtek hd audio.
-
Audio through HDMI has little to do with Realtek drivers. It uses the "Nvidia High Definition Audio"device;
You need to be in "speed" to be able to hear anything through HDMI, exactly the same to get video out.
If you cannot hear anything when trying to use HDMI audio output it probably has to do with nvidia drivers (most likely) or an unsupported audio format for the tv or device you are trying to use.
On the other hand, if sound comes from the laptop speakers, then it is easier:
right click on your speaker icon in the taskbar, "play devices", right click on "nvidia high definition audio" and select as default player. My windows installation is not in English, so my translation might not match the exact labels you find.
I hope it helps! -
I am impressed, hybrid graphics works exactly the same as in Windows 7.
I have no trouble with setting HDMI video+audio out, even setting the "thermal control", between silent, balanced and performance work as they should.
Boot to login is around 15 seconds, far from record breaking but fast enough. My SSD is an old OCZ Vertex2 240gb in case you were wondering.
bluetooth, wifi and HSPA (gobi 200) work perfectly too.
Even the active audio isolation with the bundled sony earphones works as before!
I did not expect to be able to make the switch to windows 8 without proper Sony support.
Seeing everything works, and I just have seen windows control center crash once, I wonder how much would have costed Sony to keep support for us. This is not right. This is not what we should expect. -
Thank you! Everything worked well following these steps. 1 question:
Which Chipset driver do I install? I ended up installing 2 types, but am not sure which one is actually working...
Also, I didn't install the ethernet drivers; my device manager says "Intel(R) 82577LC Gigabit Ethernet Connection", so that looks OK I think. Note that I did do 1 round of Windows update before I found this guide.
But WOW, everything works, and all my Windows 7 problems are gone! My fan doesn't go crazy loud anymore! My newmodeus hard drive caddy is always recognized! Booting, sleeping, waking is lightning fast!
1 minor issue:
When I have my monitor extended (on "Speed" setting), when I switch back to stamina, it will not switch back until I manually select "PC Screen Only".truplayr likes this. -
Don't worry too much about the chipset drivers; they are rather well behaved and don't break stuff if installed on top of one another.
How is your external monitor connected? VGA cable? I ask because HDMI only works in speed mode, so the graphics not switching to stamina if an HDMI monitor is connected is expected behaviour, as it would result in the monitor getting disconnected. -
-
Ah, that explains it. There is a setting for the driver that lets you switch modes regardless of the consequences - Andrew08 can probably tell you how to go about it - but I didn't like that much - too many things just didn't work, like Firefox. Personally, I would rather you left it as it is, but if you must have it like that, send a PM to Andrew08, or mess about with the special features 1 and 2 infs that have been included in the driver package.
-
Please guys, did somebody find solution to make card reader working after sleep or hibernation?
-
Hi all,
Many thanks to Andrew for providing this guide to the clean install of Win 8.
One problem remains for me. I cannot install the Graphics drivers. I downloaded the signed 2614.14/2281 package, but the installer just reports that the install fails. Any advice? Do I need to be in test mode?
Thanks -
-
Hi all!
I did almost exactly what you posted, but I skipped steps 8, 18, 19, 24, 28 and 29 (LAN and WiFI are properly recognized by win8 and I don't have the fingerprint reader and 3g modules)
Everything works almost fine except for the **** hybrid graphics. They only work if the system has been rebooted. If I shut down and turn on, they don't work. It is linked to the icon indicating the switch position in the system tray: when I reboot the icon is there and graphics switch. When I turn on, the icon is missing and graphics wont switch. Anyone else has observed this behaviour?
Thanks a lot! -
net stop "VAIO Event Service"
net start "VAIO Event Service"
I configured the following options in the task as well:
- Run from the SYSTEM account (so I don't see the DOS windows when running each command)
- Run even if not connected to AC source (specially useful)
You can try to put this in an *.xml file and import to your task scheduler (but I think you may encounter some problems regarding the authoring:

jesusrop: thanks for this. I have been moaning about this for ages. I found this to be associated with Windows 8 fast start feature (in power options). I would either disable fast start altogether, or restart immediately after starting, at the login screen itself. Perhaps with your method we have a usable workaround. I'll check it out later today.
-
-
Anytimer - did jesusrop's solution work for you?
I have a VGN-Z w8 clean install with "fast start" turned off. I'm hoping to re-enable it. -
Sorry, haven't tried it yet. My laptop's fan jammed solid and I had to dismantle it totally (with the exception of the screen) in order to clean and lubricate the blasted thing. And then the old thermal paste wouldn't come off - it had cured to a rock hard consistency. Anyway, I'm up and running now, so I'll give it a shot over the weekend.
-
I'm having difficulty getting my SD card reader to read. I have followed the instructions and my device manager doesn't show any error.
Any ideas?
Thanks. -
- Open Device Manager,
- right-click on the Ricoh PCIe SD Bus Host Adapter and select Disable,
- then right-click on it again and select Enable,
- now insert the SD card - it should show up in Explorer properly.
-
-
My audio disappeared and stopped working. it no longer shows in the device manager. installing the driver does nothing. my audio icon has a red x on it and when i click it it wants to detect problems (it doesn't work). what should i do? how should I diagnose the audio? I feel like this is hardware problem as it just happened out of the blue.
Thanks!
upate:
I updated the bios
chipset drivers
took it apart and unplugged and replugged the audio board
started in safemode
restored to a system restore point from a month ago.
none of these worked. any suggestions? -
Thank you really helpful.

Today I bring quite a good news
fix for left edge pull.
Code:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\ZoneConfig\TouchPadPS2_1\Left Edge Pull] "UserZoneFlags"=dword:00000001 "PalmCheckFlags"=dword:00000000 "ConfigFlagsEx"=dword:00000400 "LoXRel"=dword:00000000 "HiXRel"=dword:00001b58 "LoYRel"=dword:00001388 "HiYRel"=dword:ffffec78 "LoXFlags"=dword:00000010 "HiXFlags"=dword:0000000a "LoYFlags"=dword:00000004 "HiYFlags"=dword:00000004 "SliderFriction"=dword:00000000 "ActionType"=dword:00000002 "SliderScale"=dword:00000080 "SliderExitActivationThreshold"=dword:00000054 "SliderCancellationThreshold"=dword:00000059 "SliderActivationThreshold"=dword:00000015 "SliderStartAngle"=dword:00000032 "UnitType"=dword:00000001
for your info I only change HiXRel into higher value
the next one, I notice that everyone is having issue with SecureDigital and I am not sure about MemoryStick though, I myself use SD and found this annoying, but I am able to fix this issue.
for those who installed ricoh driver from the first post link
Code:1. open device manager 2. search for the SD driver, I am sorry I have already done mine so I can't see the name. 3. right click, properties 4. go to driver tab 5. Select Uninstall 6. Make sure you check "delete the driver software for this device" 7. right click anywhere in device manager 8. scan for hardware change
oh yes, for Secure Digital Do Not Use This Method
if you found any problem with Secure Digital after Standby, Please Tell me on this thread, I "might" have found a way to fix it. I need tester though. -
What's this optional UPEC driver in Windows Update? I can't seem to find it, the only item there was the "NVIDIA Corporation - Audio Device, Other hardware - NVIDIA High Defintiion Audio" which I assume is for HDMI Audio out.
Also, what is VAIO Location Utility for? If my VAIO doesn't have a WWAN card (it's Canadian) then does the utility apply for me? -
Edit: Never mind.
-
Hi, I did this clean install on Windows 8.1 Pro WMC.
Everything installed fine and worked with Andrew's nvidia 263.14 and 2281 drivers.
Watching video's, HDMI out, sound. Brightness fn keys all work.
However, can't game anymore. The graphics just get all laggy, I have to switch to lower resolution just to get a decent flow going.
Any reason why? Any settings to change for Windows 8.1 and these old nvidia graphics?
Btw, VPC-Z1 -
-
One question/concern though - After the install my computer says I have 15.4GB out of 107GB (I think this is a 128GB SSD)... Why so little space left? I really haven't installed anything outside of this guide (except Chrome). Any thoughts? -
Hi.
Followed your guide and installed windows 8.1 on my VPCZ1.
The problem i get is with computer sleep, screen goes blank if I for example close the lid, but the powerbutton never gets red and after a while i get a BSOD....
Anyone with this problem that got is solved? -
When I tried to install this driver on my 8.1 system it says it can't find suitable hardware?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35043569/26308 2020 101112.rar
VGNZ 26308 2020.txt
What have I done wrong?
Also I haven't finished the drivers etc, but the laptop is SO SO hot,and the fans are going crazy. -
In Device Manager I have Intel HD Graphics and Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (With a ! beside it).
Never mind got it fixed. Apparently disabling driver enforcement is the step I missed. -
Hi,
I have a problem with Gobi 2000 9225.. The device is installed and on menager says that device works perfect, but he dont seen any wan networks..
I try on windows 8 and windows 8.1 .. Please help.. -
Could be some way to do steps 5 to 38 directly? Any unattended script or something?
-
Installing Windows 8.1 does not keep previous installed applications and drivers. They're all moved to c:\windows.old. It only preserves documents, so there's no much difference from upgrading to making a clean install, and is the same coming from windows 7 or windows 8 (where apps were preserved).
I've installed 2266 by Andrew08 on windows 8.1 and yes, they work well, but for some reason the desktop and text doesn't look as crisp and sharp as with windows 7. There are some devices undetected on my VPCZ13M9E/B just after the install. See attachment.
-
The other stuff is probably card reader stuff. Ignore if not needed.
The lack of crispness of the display in Windows 8 and above has been attributed by some as being related to the fact that Aero theme is not available by default due to sufficient resources not being commonly available on mobile devices, which is what Windows 8 was targeting. There are ways of getting the aero effect. You might want to try that and see if you like it better. -
There are other annoyances too: it lacks by default of essential software, like net framework 4.x, 3.x, 2.x and so on, and even aren't available from windows store or updates, you have to manually download the installer. Another issue is that not all shortcuts installed on tiles are installed also on ordinary desktop, which is another annoyance.
It has another issue with some applications like Chrome where it's shown blurry and not defined, due to high dpi and display scaling. Even doing so and with nvidia graphic driver working, it doesn't look candy to the eye like was in windows 7:
Applications like Chrome look blurry in windows 8.1 - Super User
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=160457
http://www.howtogeek.com/175664/how...ll-on-high-dpi-displays-and-fix-blurry-fonts/ -
I'm trying step 31. SetupBtwDownloadSE.exe and the program will stop at validating. I tried win7 mode + admin mode but didn't help. Anyone got a clue what bluetooth I must have for my VPCZ1?
I ticked on the wireless on the hardware (because without doing that it would not show green in Vaio Smart Network which was step 30.
I'm trying to find the mentioned:
www.station-drivers.com).exe]Station-Drivers - News[/url]
but it doesn't exist any more it seems
I gave lenovos bluetooth 4 drivers now, will see if it is compatible with this laptop, hahaI guess they worked. Or windows built in stuff worked. Because I can connect to my Lumia 920 now from my Vaio laptop.

I only successfully installed protector suite 2009.
Protector Suite 2012 keeps on complaining that .NET 3+ isn't installed. I guess I should have installed Protector Suite 2012 before I upgraded to Windows 8. But I didn't find it online until after I had install Windows 8.1. So yes, I'm using Windows 8.1.
Under Control Panel -> Programs / Uninstall Programs -> Install Windows stuff it says that .NET 3.5 is already installed.
I did a reinstall of .NET 3.5 via a downloadable file but that didn't make any difference.
Anyone successfully installed Protector Suite 2012?
Because Protector Suite 2009 pops up 2 error messages, I'd really like to get 2012 in, maybe it works better?
I even tried this, but it didn't help: http://www.windows8core.com/how-to-enable-net-framework-3-0-and-2-0-manually-in-windows-8-1-rtm/
I cannot even uninstall Protector Suite 2009 because it complains that .NET 3 isn't installed
Maybe this is something? http://www.surfacetablethelp.com/2013/09/enable-windows-biometric-framework-in-windows-8-1.html
The program does not want to disappear from my computer. How to delete it? I went into the register and searched for anything: protector suite and delete every instance I could find. Took quite awhile and now it seems I can finally uninstall that shiz. -
Does anyone know where I can get the Protector Suite 2012 update that is mentioned on the first page of this thread?
The link in the first post is dead - and the company's website seems to be gone.
Many thanks to anyone who can help me get this update. -
Oh - one other question about the install as specified in the first post: I see that VAIO LOCATION UTILITY is listed as one of the items to install.
It was my understanding that the VAIO Location Utility was only required as part of VAIO Update (which isn't listed as part of the install - and is pretty much bloatware).
So, I'm wondering why it's included?
Or am I wrong, and is it needed for something else?
Anyone who knows, please chime in.
Thanks! -
If you read the last post of the thread below, there is a link where you can download the limited edition. If you download the W7 fingerprint sensor and protector suite software from Sony, when you install the limited edition it will turn into the full edition. The last edition that was released, the only change was that it was made license free.

Hello I have windows 8.1 with all the official sony driver installed, how do I install Andrew08's driver? I've tried removing the old driver and disabling wifi hardware but it failed.
-
-
When installing the graphics driver from Andrew and having already disabled the driver signature thing my computer will install the driver until this point and then just stop for no reason. Any ideas guys??? All other drivers work fine. Oh yea and if I install displaylink drivers it takes down Andrew's driver and disables it completely!!!
My computer is the carbon fiber VPCZ117GG.
I have to manually reset the machine after like 30 mins of waiting. It even disables my mouse and freezes everything.

I'm trying to download the nvidia graphics driver from the "my discovery..." post but it looks like the links are down. If there is anyone that can provide me with a working link or be able to send it to me email or something, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advanced -
