    hi there.

i've tried both a clean install and a recovery with vaio sz1xp/c,
but for some reason the 'system' process (no extension, so at
least it's not a trojan/spyware) uses almost all cpu.

other processes do not seem to cause problems and safe mode
does not seem to have this problem either.

i'm not sure what to enable, install or disable anymore; i've
been messing with this for three days now. i ran memtest86 to
verify that my memory wasn't addle.. i mean broken, but that
    was not the case.

hm.. just realised i have not done a complete restore yet, with
all appliations too - i've only tried semi-restores.

i'll do a full restore and report back after that.

*update* full restore did not help, nor work properly. i ended
up doing another clean install using a modified windows xp sp2
cd (used nlite to modify it), with some services, drivers and
other bits and pieces removed. no cpu problems anymore.

*update 2* okay.. the problem is still there. for some reason
i can not play sound - when i try, the program which tries to
    produce it locks up.

i'll keep messing with this, but suggestions would be very much
    appreciated. perhaps i've missed something.

ok. used 'process explorer' from sysinternals, which breaks
down the system process and shows a lot more info on run-
ning processes than windows task manager.

it allowed me to narrow down the problem to 'Deferred Pro-
cedure Calls' - using the wifi/bluetooth switch made this
    process use 0% cpu, instantly.

i will do a clean install, so that there are less variables to
deal with while trying to narrow down which driver or piece
of hardware is causing the problem.

i narrowed down the problem a bit - i used process explorer
from sysinternals - 'Deferred Procedure Calls' are/were using
    most of my cpu.

i am doing a clean install now and checking cpu usage after
each succesful driver / application installation. i disabled all
    unneeded services as well.

i installed wifi and integrated gfx-card without problems so
far. i'll try the rest of the devices and report back.

*update* installed the sigmatel driver, tried a movie and ker-
*blammo* - cpu usage shot up, making my system near un-
usable. i disabled the soundcard, rebooted and tried the same
    video. ofcourse i had no sound, but no high cpu usage either;
around 15-20%, which is very acceptable when watching a
    movie.

i will now look for alternate / updated soundcard drivers; i was
using the ones from a newly downloaded package on sony.nl.

*update* i opened a case with sony e-support; i'll report back
how that goes, just to make sure that others who might encou-
nter this problem do not have to waste as much time as i have.

thanks for your time and replies. my issue was solved by downgrading
my bios to the only one available from sony - R0062N0.

i had R0063N0, and apparently sony knows there's something wrong
with it as well, as it's not available on their site.

+1 to the sony support team - they suggested i update my bios (sure,
it was a downgrade.. but it was either downgrade the bios or send my
system to them to have it repaired - not an option i'd prefer).

my system actually boots a lot faster now too, from 3+ minutes to un-
der one minute. furthermore, the system is more responsive too.
