    Hi there,

Was a happy owner of the new Z (HDD model) and was looking to do some work with installing a new Intel X25.

The disassembly process went fine at first but things fell apart on the 2nd go (when I did to open it the 2nd time to fix the rubber part holding the HDD). The black keyboard connector (the part connecting to the mother board) is very snug and it came off the orange cable/ribbon just as I was opening it up - I was very careful not to tear the ribbon as warned, but I guess the connector was plugged in so tight that it came off the actual ribbon just as I was pulling the keyboard upwards.

As such, I think I need a way to order a new keyboard ribbon to try to salvage the situation if possible. Does anyone know if there is a way for me to order a spare part for the keyboard ribbon to see if I can try to fix the situation? Would anyone happen to have the parts number and would you know if it's something I can order direct from Sony (I presume not).

    Thanks for the help guys!

That ebay offer is the old FPC-130 cable, for old Z (VGN-Z)

If you have new Z (VPC-Z) you will need a different part.

Hey Codecadet, I was in your shoe couple months back with my old Z. Was trying to change the HDD to 750Gb, accidentally broke the ribbon clip attached to the boards. Sent back to Sony and they change the entire mouse pad as well. Took 3 weeks. Make use of your warranty, its free. Just box it back and sent it to them.

I always get the extended warranty as I like to rip laptops apart. It cover all my "accidental damage".

Thanks for this - I got the extended ("wide" in japan) warranty as well and as the machine is new, I was hoping that they would honour the change. Given how meticulous they are about everything here, I was hoping that they wouldn't say anything about my efforts in opening up the system and voiding the guarantees. I've arranged for a pickup-up for tomorrow so will be keeping my fingers crossed for the next few weeks!

Good to hear that there's at least a positive precedent here though!
