Today, I am going to buy VGN S580. Thanks to this forum that I learned processor, memory and harddisk are upgradable. However I don't know whether putting new pieces into the laptop is difficult or not and whether it worths.
I can buy a minimal configuration with:
* Int Pent M Processor 740 1.73GHz,
* 512 MB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-400, 256 MBx2),
* 40GB 5400rpm Serial ATA.
for $1640 and upgrade these products later by myself.
OR I can buy a maximal configuration with:
* Int Pent M Processor 780 2.26GHz (+$650),
* 2 GB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-400, 1 GBx2) (+$1000),
* 120GB 5400rpm Serial ATA (+$250)
for $3540 (I know that is too much) and I will not need to upgrade anything.
Or I can choose a configuration in between and that is what I'm thinking of. Which parts are relatively cheaper when you buy it from somewhere else? And which parts are relatively easier to be upgraded? I need suggestions. Thanks.

You are going to have the easiest time upgrading the RAM, followed by the hard drive. I don't think it's really worth it to upgrade the processor yourself - besides being the most difficult and dangerous to your computer, the cost savings aren't that great.
Check out crucial.com to price out your ram - I can all but guarentee it will be quite a bit less than $1000. SATA hard drives are a little harder to find these days, but you should be able to find one on newegg or something (try froogle) for less than $250. And you can always buy an enclosure off newegg for the hard drive that comes with your comp and get a free external to boot!Last edited by a moderator: Feb 2, 2015 -
I'm about to purchase the S-580, and I am planning on just upgrading the RAM. The processor and Hard Drive just isn't worth the hassle to upgrade.
- The 120GB Seagate Hard Drive at new egg is $248. Sony Style upgrade to 120GB Hard Drive is $250.
- The 2GB Pentium M at mwave.com is $300 where the upgrade at sony style is $270. 2.26GHZ is hard to find, but at pricewatch the cheapest is $700 sony wants $770.
-The RAM at crucial is $300 for 2GB where sony wants $1000 upgrade from 512MB. (Well worth doing it yourself)
It looks like sonystyle updated the website and is now showing the upgrade to Geforce 6400 -
Whatever you do, PLEASE don't spend $1000 for 2 GB of RAM from Sony! You can buy 2GB of SODIMM DDR2 (400 or 533) for only around $200 from Newegg.com, which is exactly what I did last night! It's not that hard to install it; all you need is a small screwdriver or two, and the Sony user's manual even gives you direction on how to do it!

Agreed, upgrade the memory and hard drive after. Upgradin the CPU while under warranty will void it.

I am also almost certain on purchasing an S580, and will be doing the purchase 512 then upgrade RAM deal. its the way to go. forget wasting time on the HD IMHO... 80MB will be plenty for me on a laptop, and carrying a 2-4GB USB pen drive for easy backup or transfer of important stuff.
*** remember one thing - if you purchase an HD from someone else, and that drive breaks, then it wont be covered by any warranty you purchase from Sony!! (duh!!)
another reason not to bother with the HD. After all, it is just a laptop... even your desktop HD will break down sometimes... to say the least... LOL.
(urgent) memory upgrade S580
