Checked the specs of the FS760 today at the Sony Store using dxdiag and the system RAM was listed as 510MB (for those who's wondering, this is normal). The GeForce Go 6400 showed as having 128MB of video memory. Now, call me a noob, but isn't the GeForce Go on the FS760 supposed to share 96MB of RAM? It didn't seem to me the graphics chip was using any system memory to me at all.

I admit, don't know a lot about integrated graphics, but this just seems a little weird. Sonystyle.com lists the GeForce Go 6400 as using Turbocache technology.

Hm, that is interesting. I don't think it has 128MB of video memory dedicated either.. this FS is very similar, and also lists "Up to 128MB...". I believe that it has 64MB of dedicated memory + 64 shared. Can't be 100% sure, but that is probably most likely.

Why do they have to be so obscure!?

That is very interesting. However, I have heard that the 6400 varies the amount of RAM it uses depending on the load that it is given. My friend, who owns an FS series with the 6400, said that he tried varying the graphics load on his computer and told me that the graphics chip dynamically changes the amount of RAM borrowed from the system RAM, somewhat similar to PMs Speedstep Technology or AMD's PowerNow Technology. I have not actually verified this information, but this is my take on the situation. Maybe the X200M does something similar....

I'd test my laptop tommorow afternoon so check back soon if y'all wanna know what I figured out. I'd post benchmark results of 3DMark 2003/2005 and determine (if possible) the amount of system memory borrowed.

I remember how much of a pain it was to find any info about the GeForce Go 6400. Performance numbers of the new graphics chip were nothing but nonexistant on the net. Hopefully this info would be useful for those of you who want to get a new Sony VAIO FS-7xx series laptop.

edit: Sorry guys, too busy today so I don't think I'd be able to post anything significant before 2:00AM tommorow. I'd eventually post some numbers though. I promise.

If I remember correctly, the XPress200M allocates the amount of video RAM needed from a BIOS (or driver) setting. It's not dynamic like what Turbocache is supposed to do.

I remember reading somewhere that the GeForce 6400 uses 64 MB dedicated memory and only borrows up to an additional 192 MB when necessary. You probably need to run an intensive game to figure out how is much is really dedicated.

Unless Swat 4 is a graphics intensive game, I really have nothing that'll require more than 64 megs of video RAM. Oh well, I'd still try to see if I can find anything.

Needless to say, I'm not impressed. At first I was expecting it to be faster than the desktop Radeon X550 but guess what? It aint.

Still didn't install a game yet, but possibly wouldn't. On top of the poor graphics performance, the system runs like a hog with its limited 512MB RAM and 4200RPM drive. I should've known better. Hmm.. the new Dell Inspiron 9300 looks sweet. Guess I'd return my Sony and get that one instead. For those of you reading this who by any chance recommended me the Apple Powerbook over the Sony VAIO yesterday, well, you see, even though Dell's coming up with a new lineup pretty soon, it's really too good of a deal to pass. Check their website and you'd know what I mean. GeForce Go 6800 and 1G of 533MHz DDR2 RAM for CAD $1799 before tax and shipping? Totally awesome price if you ask me.
