1. Since I would imagine taking apart the sony to get to the fan would void the warranty, what can i do to get dust out of the fan?
2. If I have a WAN card, where is the slot for the SIM card? What is it called in device manager?
-
First, warranty will be void if they know you opened the laptop.
Second, If WAN is Cingular, it has SIM slot. If it is Sprint, there is no SIM slot. -
Yes, I suspected opening it would be a bad idea, so is there anything else I can do to get rid of the dust? would blowing compressed air into where the hot air comes out help? or create more problems? Could I take it to the sony techs to blow it out? or would that be expensive as heck?
And I cant find a SIM card slot anywhere, so I'm assuming my card is CDMA? How in the world do you activate that for cell carriers? But more importantly, what is the device called in device manager? (so I can verify if I have one or not).
In my add/remove programs list there is 'mobile broadband generic drivers', so maybe it is there?? -
Take the battery out and the sim slot is right there.
As for dust in the pc - did you drop something iinto the pc? Shouldnt be any build up inside...especiall on a new pc. -
dang, no sim card slot then, theres just a cover over it.
Reason why I want to know aobut the dust is because my computer was demo model at the best buy I work at. Been there for a few months before i finally bought it (I let it age a few weeks to drop in price). Problem is, the store is dusty as heck, and I KNOW that this thing has sucked in quite a bit of it. On top of that, I have 4 dogs and 3 cats, and I live near a gravel pit which creates dust too.
Suffice to say, I NEED to be able to dust it out, or it will burn up long before the warranty expires. My previous laptop had to be cleaned out every 4 months or so. -
My recommendation:
Part 1:
With the computer ON, and the fan in "performance mode":
Do multiple canned air blows on all the air INTAKES of the laptop, especially the one under the fan.
Part 2:
With the computer OFF:
Use a pair of small pincers to grab and pull out any visible fluff from any and all crevices or air intakes.
Do some short canned air blows on the air EXHAUST.
This will help dislodge any stuck dust.
Once done, gently suck the air intakes and exhausts with a vacuum cleaner.
Part 3: Repeat part 1. -
That worked great! lots of dust came out.... Thanks!

WOW, never come across that before, and a good tip to boot. cheers
