Hello everybody,
I'm going to buy the FW300 series. I'm Newbie and I have lots of questions but all of them are sloved by others members posts and replies![]()
Now I'm confusing in choosing wether 2.66HZ or 6GB of Ram in the new Vaio FW 300 series !
Thanks for support !
Does anybody know about VGNFW390NOB, VGNFW390JFB and VGNFW390YFB specs ?
thanks again !

choose the one which arent "upgradeable" like cpu, gpu.
in your case, i would certainly go with the higher cpu speed rather than the higher ram but lower cpu speed. -
cpu hands down. i dont know anyone except for graphics designers that will ever use 6gb of ram
-
Thanks to Miyabi & Brawn alot ! Yours reply is really helpfull !
I found that the in some Vaio Specs has some symbols like " 16.4-IN BT WVB" or " 16.4IN BT WVHP" or " 16.4-IN BT WVHU"
I inferred that WVB would be ECO screen and both of WVHP and WVHU are FullHD screen ! Any ideas ? -
On the other hand, if you multitask heavily, like compiling with parallel makes, extra memory comes in very handy. Or if you use one of the few apps that have been tweaked to take advantage of more than 4 GB total, 2 GB user. But those are few and far between. For most users, this much RAM will just translate to a bigger disk cache, meaning less HD access and an overall more responsive user experience. -
For average use a 2.66Ghz CPU is serious overkill. 2.26Ghz or 2.4Ghz are more than fast enough for average use with Vista and Windows 7.
Unless you're doing some heavy CPU intensive applications, it will impossible to tell the difference with a 2.66Ghz CPU. In the same way 6GB can be a wasted money. Guessing by your posts, you don't need either.
If you want good advice you're going to need to describe what you exactly do with your laptop. -
I usually use Photoshop CS3 and AutoCad! I love playing games (Call Of Duty,...) and watch HD movies too!
As you know, I scared of being out of date! I see now, 4GB of Ram is becoming ususal and 2.4GHz is a standard specs of some laptop! I want my investment don't be out of date too soon^^!
Thanks a lot -
Depending on how you use Photoshop and AutoCad you may benefit from 6GB memory, as long as you use Vista 64. You can check your memory use with ctrl-alt-del.
Games are GPU dependant. Any Core 2 Duo over 2.0Ghz will do for games. Watching HD movies will also run fine with any Core 2 Duo CPU. -
Thanks a lot!
I thought as much Ram and CPU as benefit in doing everything!
I just a normal Graphic Designer. The best GPU in Sony notebook now only came with the Vaio FW series as Ati 3650 (512 MB)! This is just a mid-end card! Of course there are alot of higher-end graphic cards out there! But I only fall in love with Vaio due to its bright, true color screen!

I thought FW3 series has a better Ati 4xxx GPU.
AW series has Nvidia 9600GT afaik.

You'd really benefit from the workstation class GPUs in the Dell Precision series, if you are a frequent user of AutoCAD. The new (2009) version supports DirectX though, so it'll work out with a normal GPU as well.
But if the question is only between 6Gb of RAM and 2.66Ghz CPU, then go for the RAM, definitely. It'll make a huge difference in Photoshop, I'm straining my 4Gb a lot when using it for high-res designs.
Don't forget a 64Bit operating system. -
Yes, I would prefer the Full HD Screen with 1920x1080.
The AW with 18.4" comes with 9600gt but it's too heavy T_T ! I use to travel along with my laptop...so the weight is an important point to me.
The Dell Precision is amazing!! Dell Precision M6300 comes with Quadro FX 1600M but higher price than Dell Precision Workstation M4400 with Quadro FX 770M and the M6300 seems to be too heavy with 3.8kg ! But they both better than the 3650) ! I will check it wether the screen is nice like Sony does !
Thanks -
The Precision 2400, the one most similar in size and weight to the Z, packs more power than the Z at a better price. I think the FX 370M is based on the nVidia 8400M, just like the 9300M that comes with the Z, you should check that up to be sure, though.
Only difference is that it's heavier (2.5 vs 1.5 kg), the screen is larger (14.1" vs 13.1") and the resolution is 1440*900, which, IMO, is better than the full 1600. What I'm missing on a laptop screen is mostly the vertical space.
I doubt the colors look as nice on the M2400 screen as on the Z, though. You'd be missing out on that. I really can't say anything about the M2400 screen quality, maybe you could find some info on the Dell boards.
If you are a designer, workstation class GPU is kind of the way to go.
