For those saying you don't need the 256mb memory from the vid card because the sz wouldn't take advantage of it, youre wrong. Go try and load up Rise of Nations:rise of ledgends game. There are lot of gfx features turned off because it only sees 128mb of video memory. In the gfx settings it says feature turned off because there is no 256mb of video memory.
So its just not always for speed, but also for graphic dumps too.
If I could just find the .pdf that sony was using claiming some sz models had 256mb I would make them eat those words for missprint.
And no. I wouldnt get rid of my szz160. I finally got something that works.sorta.![]()

Thanks! I'll see what Sony has to say. But I bet they'll say something like:
1) These manuals are updated regularly and its been corrected
2) The game is wrong. It doesnt detect the cached memory. -
Keep us updated!
Javier -
what? its 128 dedicated, and up to 128 shared, for a total for 256mb. simple.
-
Nope. If thats the case, then the game read the vid card wrong. All shared video cards will read as maximum ram, but in reality may use up to that maximum.
Sony didnt answer my question to them yet. -
rhcpcrony is right, well at least that's a consensus reached on the forum - there's no definit answer from Sony to my knowledge. What do your NVidia Graphics properties say? It should list 256MB RAM (On the S-Series it was required to have 1GB of System RAM though)
Edit: See http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=53063
My guess is the game just doesn't detect the "Turbocached" RAM -
Correctomundo!
Even with 2gb of ram i cant get 256mb to show up. -
-Jason -
Exactly. I dont think any of the sz series has a 256mb video card. Yes, I'm talking aobut with turbo cache. The turbo cache is SUPPOSED to show up when looking at memory size or games wouldnt know how to use it. As my example: Rise of Nations: ROL shows I only have 128mb of ram and disables higher gfx features.
And yes, I know running those gfx features would slow the poor laptop to a crawl, but at least its there. Kinda like having a Mustang GT. I want the ability to hit 160mph on the freeway but not that I could do it with traffic. But thats what I paid for. -
Erm I play Rise of Nations: Thrones & Patriots at max settings even through GameSpy or Local Area Connection with friends...
SZ doesnt lag one bit on that game...and I know it has 128MB Dedicated through various tests and some calls to Sony. About it going to 256MB with Turbocache I am not sure.
And according to the Sony Site its only 128MB Geforce 7400...So Im still kind of confused... -
Not that one. Rise of Nations: Rise of legends. Trust me, with EVERYTHING turned on, it will slow down the best systems. Including my sli setup at home.
But then again I was playing at 1680x1200.
Exactly. And if you read the pdf(oops its for the 160, not the 120 like yours) it states it should have 256mb ram(shared).
aer0- You put macosx on this laptop? How well does it move? Any issues? -
SZ120 and 160 have the same memory...thats a fact
while FE and SZ dont.
Oh that game - my bad then -
and thats the whole argument about this. go read the pdf that was in the second or thrid posting here. it ssays 256mb.
and:aer0- You put macosx on this laptop? How well does it move? Any issues? -

In each store I went to get the SZ160, asking what the difference was with the 120 the answer was always that 160=256MB and 120=128MB.
Obviously due to wrong information provided by Sony -
Mine shows as 128 dedicated in windows. I posted a screenshot in one of these threads.
Can you post a screenshot of the linux readout. -
Working on it though -
I have a nVidia 6200 on my desktop from Gigabyte, on the box it states 128MB dedicated and 256MB with Turbocache. In Windows it only shows 256MB, no mention of a "dedicated" 128MB anywhere -
What doesnt work(besides the camera)? Is it worth it? I have macosx and it would be useful since I use the mac at work.

Wow, that Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends is really good at NOT letting you pick what you want. Not only will it block you from not displaying some gfx if you dont have 256mb of ram, but since it doesnt detect 2Ghz processor, it'll even stop you from using some "physics" in displaying animation for the units. Even though we have a 1.8Ghz DUAL CORE it doesnt consider that enough. You would figure MS would work with Intel on that
256mb video memory for sz
