This would be pretty expensive and i don't think there are any apps that need 4gigs. my 2 cents.

Guess your answer so far is no...
Memory do keep dropping quickly. You could probably just get a single 2gb stick. You wouldn't have the dual channel benefits if you mixed different ram capacities but you could upgrade your other stick later if you need.

As for need... I have a 2gb system and occassionally I still have memory issues. For instance, I could be working on a trade show poster and working with very high res TIF images (200MB+). I'll have Photoshop open for image editing, Capture One Pro for raw file conversions, Illustrator for vector artwork, and InDesign for actually laying out the poster. I will also usually have Firefox and Outlook open as well. I can attest that 2GB can be a limitation and slow Photoshop down.

I also notice that manufacturers typically put in lower max ram capacity because when they test, higher GB ram is not available. So it is hard to tell if the max ram stated by the manufacturer is real or not.

I have tons of apps open at the same time.
I read that the Merom chip is able to handle more than
2 gigs of RAM and that perhaps Sony somehow "disabled"
this feature. I want to know if indeed this is the case.

Quasi dupe thread of one I started
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=74959&highlight=FenderP

I 100% disagree that more than 2GB is excessive. Some of us actually could use it - I know I could. Running 5 VMWare virtual machines at once strains the system.

All Pentium M, Core Duo, and Core 2 Duo can support 4GB of memory. The question is whether Sony crippled it in BIOS.

My guess is no, since at one point the S (not SZ) was rated at 1GB, but people put 2GB in there. Sony uses 2 slots. My Sharp MW-70J said 1.5GB and is only 1.5 since there is only one slot (although I bet I could get a single 2GB and it would take it up). My JVC 741 was max of 1.25GB (it was rated at 768, not 1.25 - 256 soldered on the board, and one SODIMM slot).

I would agree that it is cost prohibitive. I may buy one 2GB stick and try to get up to 3GB, which would give me pretty much what I want. 4GB would be great, but spending $1600 is not at the top of my list right now.

Is the Vaio TX capable of accepting 2.5GB of RAM? What brands are compatible with the Vaio TX right now? I have an onboard 512MB with an empty slot, but I hardly think 1.5GB will guarantee my notebook will live up to its fullest use.

The TX series even without it having 1 memory slot is more constrained because you only have a 1.8" drive which generally spins at 4200rpm. The TX series isn't meant for heavy tasks. 1.5GB for running Word, Excel, and surfing the 'net should be just plenty.

It is also a bit constrained by the low voltage CPUs too.

I use more than 2GB RAM all very often (processing PIV data in Matlab). I will get my new SZ270 tomorrow, do u think I can upgrade that to 4GB?

Read earlier and the other thread I link. I don't think Sony hardcoded 2GB into BIOS, but if you want to spend $1600+ on RAM alone, go for it.

The extra RAM can also be used as a RAMdrive.
