I have a Sony SZ450n laptop and according to Sony's specification it handles 2GB max, but according to Intel's specification 945GM chipset can handle up to 4GB.
Has anyone tried to work with more than 2GB with this laptop series?

While not a sony, I had 2 laptops at home with the same chipset and while it supports up to 4gb, on one it can't address more than 3gb and on the other it supported the full 4gb. I'd say it depends on the bios.

Other forum members have tried this before and it's limited to 3.12GB because of the BIOS even in W7 64bit.

If I recall correctly, the 945GM chipset has a 32-bit memory controller. A hardware limitation.

You probably know the answer by now but since no one else has given you a concrete answer here it is.

Basically as suggested the Intel 945PM does indeed support 4GB RAM but good luck trying to make use of it. Unfortunately it doesn't support 64bit memory remapping and thus in practice you're limited to about 3-3.25GB.

You can read about it here:
4GB DDR2 laptop memory in an Intel 945PM chipset based laptop only reports 3GB
