I installed 4gb ram ( 2gb x 2) but it only shows 3gb on system property. Also is it a good idea to install notebook hardware control?

This is a known limitation on 32bit operating systems. Don't waste your time trying to get around it. I think the system would be capable of using 4GB if you moved to a 64bit OS.

It will recognize 4GB with a 64-Bit OS, it is not a motherboard limitation.

Press F2 while booting up. This will bring up the BIOS. If it says 4096MB RAM, you are OK but you still need 64 bit OS, like others said, to fully utilize 4GB RAM.

It's not a matter if Vista or XP, it's whether it is a 32-Bit or 64-Bit version of the OS. You need 64-Bit to use 4GB, as well as a capable processor.
