So I have an SZ with a 160GB hybrid hard drive. Random seek operations still seem pretty slow to me (I'm from the desktop world). I'm looking at replacing it with a 7200RPM hard drive. Is this a wise choice? Would the extra rotation speed make up for not having a hybrid drive? To my knowledge there are no 7200 + Hybrids.

"Hybrid" feature is related to long time to shutdown issue on vaio sz.. and no any performance gain for me...

change to 5400rpm hybrid to 7200rpm ? Definetely YES... I'm did it and very happy now..

Upgraded my SZ650 from the 160GB Hybrid to a Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm 16mb cache and it took 10seconds off my load. Also most of Vista's speed issues were resolved.

Vista HD score went from 4.8 to 5.4 also.

How about the battery life with hybrid drive and without hybrid drive (but 7200rpm) ... will it drain the battery faster to use 7200rpm ?

How about the vibration come from 7200rpm ? is it noticeable compare to the 5400rpm hybrid ?

How about the clicking sound that i heard on the hybrid drive @5400rpm .. does it come more often with 7200rpm as it spin faster ?

How about the heat produce with faster spinning at 7200rpm ?

I've noticed no issues of battery, sound, heat or vibrations due to the drive. I'm bothered by noise easily.

Thanks ... do you re-use the hybrid drive as USB external enclosure ? does it work properly on those external case ?

Thinking to upgrade it as well, but might as well use the hybrid drive as backup and accessible through USB.
