Has anyone tried installing one of the new 200GB 7200RPM laptop drives in their SZ? If so do you notice any improvements in loading performance and any significant drop in battery life? I'm considering getting one of these drives as I'm running low on space and could do with a startup time boost.

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST9160823AS/

this is a 160gb sata 2.5 7200rpm on the market, and of course a 200gb 7200rpm from samsung, but don't know wheather it's on the market yet.
you will see noticeable speed improvement in vista but not really in xp, and of course battery consumption will be increased.

Hitachi has the new 7K200 which goes up to 200GB (they also have a 160, 120, 100, 80, et al. like Seagate). It's not on the market yet other than in Dell and Alienware machines. Mass market in the next few months.

It's supposedly a tad faster than the Momentus 7200.7 which is the one you link. The Seagates are starting to trickle out, but I'm holding out for the 200GB one.

It means there is no sata 2.5 200GB 7200rpm drive on the market atm. No one could say anything about speed/power consumption.

FeAlexMcIver's question was does someone notice any differences in performance / power consumption on these new drives.
Because no such drive is out yet, no one can answer his questions.
That is what I wanted to say.

well, Visioneer, then i would say you are pretty wrong in this case, true that these is not one out yet, BUT, performance and consumption are proportional increased.

Here is a screenshot of the Seagate Momentus data sheet:

You can see that the power consumption is independent of the drive size. It is depent on spindel speed and the number of platters.

Am I pretty wrong? Who knows, I don't. Time will tell.

You're not taking into consideration the 7K200 here - Seagate isn't the only one doing large capacity 2.5" drives.

Hitachi 7K200 - this same power consumption independent of the drive size.

Not that hard to change but still not for the feint. It requires you to take apart about half the laptop. The hard drive on SZ series is located beneath the left palm rest.

I'm thinking of upgrading to either Seagate's 160GB 7200RPM or Hitachi 200GB 7200. Only question is which one will be available to the masses first. I know the Seagate 120GB 7200 are available. Seen some online shops selling it and actually in-stock, but the Segate 160GB version none have it in stock.

You're welcome. I use already the new 160GB Momentus and I can say it's fast, but noticeable warmer as my original Vaio Fujitsu Siemens.

The 160GB 7200 Momentus drives are hard to come by. I've waited so long, I'm just going to get the 200GB drive. It's supposedly a bit faster and quieter than the Momentus.

SonyStyle website has an upgrade option on teh SZ640 and SZ680 for a 7200RPM 200gb hard drive. Anybody know which make/model they are using?

I have the P1 installed hitachi 7k200 200GB drive on a SZ691N/X with 4GB RAM and it is the fasted pc I've ever used.

The other day, whilst using Word in stamina mode, I got close to 5 hours out of the battery (I didn't run it to flat so I'm not totally sure).

So from my experience the 7200rpm drive is a) fast, b) not bad for batteries.
