    Hi,

G-Skill is now selling 4 GB RAM DDR2-PC5300 sticks :)

I'd like to install two of them in my VAIO SZ6 running Vista x64, in order to run more virtual machines simultaneously.

Sony indicates the SZ can support 4GB RAM max, but the chipset is supposed to handle more.

Do you know if this VAIO can use those sticks ?

    Thanks.

Unfortunately, the answer is NO. The Intel PM965 mobile chipset used in the SZ6/7 series can only support up to 4 GB of physical memory. See Intel spec: http://www.intel.com/assets/pdf/datasheet/316273.pdf

This is not to be confused with the 36-bit memory address space (64 GB) of the PM965 chipset.

Yes, I've seen this document before.

However, according to many threads on this forum, many people have success running 8gb RAM with PM965 on IBM, Dell or Apple laptops...

But so far, nobody tried this on a Vaio :( .

    Hi lamdatz1989,

Thanks for your incredibly useful comment.

I'm a teacher. My laptop have to run multiple virtual machines with Win2k8, Windows XP, Vista and Fedora, in order to demonstrate multiple heterogenous network configurations to my students. 13,3" is a good size for me, and for my use at work and school.

4GB RAM were fine running two or three Windows 2003 and XP, but it has become difficult with the lastest OS. Today, I need two or three Windows 2008 running simultaneously as a DC server, software router, etc. and multiple clients.

They might be able to support up to 6GB of ram.
Some Dell users using the 965 chipset i think found out their laptop could support up to 6GB in 64 bit OS.

I agree. 965 chipset can afford up to 8gb, while 945 chipset (napa) cannot.

I know Lenovo X61 based upon 965 chipset supports upto 8gb. If X61 can, sz on Santa Rosa platform (SZ6, SZ7) can do as well.
