I am cancelling my Dell XPM1530 in favour of either a desktop or a Sony FZ series with an 8600M GS.

Is there much of a performance difference between the GT and the GS?

Yes, the difference b/t the two GPUs is pretty significant, especially when you consider the fact that the 8600M on the Dell XPS M1530 is DDR3. Just out of curiosity, why did you cancel your order?

I cancelled my order because they have delayed my order twice and I refuse to be treated like that by a modern company.

Well, you might want to rethink your decsion  Unless you're not going to be doing any significant gaming, you really should go with the XPS. It's the better option and Dell will have it at your doorstep sooner or later (delays happen all the time).

Well delays shouldn't happen all the time. I can't see how they occur and customer service fob you off so much.

I've decided on a desktop now, but thanks for the advice.

8600GS in Euro FZ is apparently clocked at 500/500, which gives 3Dmark score of about 2800-2900, about 400 point lower than scores of typical GDDR2 8600GT. The real life difference between these two would be very little, not to mention FZ have more headroom for OC. However, DDR3 8600GT in X1530 can trash both easily. On the other hand, for issues like build quality or LCD quality, FZ is better - especially for the later, which FZ is significantly better.

But yeah, if you want to game, desktop cannot be beaten. Not-so-expensive HD38xo can make even a DDR3 8600GT looks like a joke.
